The vibrant twin towns of Bowness and Windermere hold enduring appeal for many visitors to the Lake District, both providing a range of amenities, shops and restaurants to suit all tastes. Boat trips are available from Bowness to Ambleside, the Lakeside Aquarium and Beatrix Potter’s ‘Hill Top House’ at Sawrey. Orrest Head, where Alfred Wainwright was inspired to write his series of iconic guidebooks, is on the edge of the town and Grizedale Forest Park is nearby, with delightful walks, mountain biking and the ‘Go Ape’ adventure park. There are many National Trust properties in the area, as well as a variety of watersports for the more energetic. Bowness and Windermere are ideally situated for exploring all the region has to offer - within easy reach of destinations such as Langdale, Grasmere, Coniston Water, Kendal, Keswick and the Lakeland Mountains, including Scafell Pike, England’s highest.
