  • "The location was perfect and the price was fair."

The cottage was lovely to stay in. As personal reference, some curtains in the bedroom would be nice as we found it to be quite light in a morning but other than that, we really enjoyed it and would definitely stay again.

Thank you for your positive feedback Serena and take on board your comments re the window shutters. Glad you enjoyed our cottage and we hope to welcome you back soon! Gill Property Owner

  • "What a fantastic find."

After having been self catering for over 40 years this is one of the best we’ve stayed in.There was everything anyone could want. The property was clean and very comfortable. The actual location was ideal just a short 15 minute walk along the path towards Ambleside. Although we experienced wet weather this didn’t deter us going out.The small garden across the road was a bonus.Where you could sit and admire the view. Plenty of places to eat and drink in Ambleside, you need to book when busy to guarantee your table if dining out. We will certainly be returning to the Mounting Steps soon.

Thank you for the lovely feedback Carole. I'm glad you made the most of the property and location, despite the awful weather this week! We look forward to welcoming you back one day and hope you get better weather next time! Gill Property Owner

  • "We had a good time at The Mounting Steps."

The place is comfortale and have everything you need. Location is great too. Ambleside centre town is within walking distance and you can access a private (shared) garden, across the road. Unfortunetly, we were not warned that scafolding were in place in both sides of the terrace house which result in construction noise but also no parking space as it wasn't safe to leave the car (e.g. debris falling) - we were lucky to be able to park elsewhere in the courtward though. Overall, it was a good experience, the bathroom is perfect, it is worth climbing the steps after a long day hiking to enjoy a bath!

Hi Cassandra So sorry to hear about your experience with the neighbours roofing work. I only found out about the scaffolding just before your visit, and attended myself to check that it wasn't blocking our property. I wasn't informed when the works would take place. I am disappointed that you were disturbed by the work and that you didn't feel it safe to park your car in our parking space. However, I am glad you enjoyed our cottage and hope you had some good hiking days in the beautiful area! Property Owner

  • "Lovely cosy and comfortable accommodation to relax in after a long walk, bed very comfortable for a good night's sleep."

From a personal view only, feel a big walk in shower would be more beneficial than the bath and small shower cubicle.

Hi Karen, I am pleased to confirm that a brand new bathroom, with a much larger shower area, is being installed in May 22. I hope you can return sometime to enjoy it. Thank you, Gill Property Owner

  • "Mounting steps is in an excellent position , a very easy and lovely walk into Ambleside."

The cottage has a lovely sitting room which is light and bright. The kitchen well equipped and the steps didn’t bother us at all. The bathrooms need refurbishment especially the main one , the shower cubicle is tiny ( we are small people) and a bit grubby. The bedroom on the lower floor has a damp issue which wasn’t great but as we had lovely weather so we had the windows open all the time. Saying this we still had a great time but would not stay here again.

'Thank you for your positive comments on our cottage. We are sorry that you had a poor experience with the shower and possibly with the ground floor. I have personally been and given the shower a really good clean with bleach and I am sure you would be happier with it now. The cottage is set deeply into to the hillside of Loughrigg Fell, which, very occasionally, may give the impression of a slight damp feel on the ground floor. We love this about the cottage, and have a dehumidifier which keeps the room fresh, dry and aired. Unfortunately , the cleaners had not been emptying it regularly, but this has now been rectified. I can assure you the room is very clean and lovely for our guests at all times.' Gill, the owner. Property Owner

  • "Very comfortable holiday home in an extremely convenient location."

Just be ware the steps between flours are steep and a bit of a challenge at the end of a long day walking.

  • "Generally everything was as expected, however, whilst ok for us 2 fairly fit people, older people would really struggle with the stairs & the "dash" across the road to the garden!"

    Lovely property though!!

The property

The tiny hamlet of Clappersgate, at the head of Lake Windermere, is just a 10-minute stroll from Ambleside.

It is here guests will find The Mounting Steps; a charming cottage set in the cobbled courtyard of an impressive manor house.

The property gets its name from the original ‘mounting steps’ once used by riders when setting out on their horses, perhaps to admire the wonderful views and scenery of the surrounding area.

The cottage is set over three floors, with living space and kitchen making the most of the views from the upper floors.

Entering at ground floor level, and off the entrance hall, is a stylish bedroom with en-suite featuring washbasin and wc.

This room looks into the pretty courtyard with traditional stone buildings and shrubs.

A riverside garden is close by and is perfect for relaxing and listening to the water as it runs by.

Upstairs is a welcoming and cosy sitting room with lovely views, comfortable furnishings and warming wood burning stove.

Perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine or taking a quick nap.

On the top floor is the modern, well equipped kitchen with dining area from which guests can admire the breath-taking view over the roof tops to the Lakeland fells.

There is parking just outside the door of The Mounting Steps, although with so much on offer in nearby Ambleside, guests will be tempted to explore the many independent shops, tea rooms, fabulous pubs and quirky cinemas on foot.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £200.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
