  • "The apartment was lovely."

Very warm and cosy in a beautiful location. The only criticism is that there is only 1 pub and they do not serve food between December and March. I think that this should be mentioned on the website.

  • "Lovely property, very clean, warm and comfortable."

No useful nearby takeaway so you’ll need to cook or use the pub across the road (which is ok). Kitchen needs kitchen roll, foil, spray oil - just little basics that usually come as a standard in holiday accommodation. Sky tv/internet is intermittent but didn’t affect us too much. There is an Alexa in the property, which kept piping up and one day we arrived back, to music playing. On our last night (Thurs 26 Oct), the upstairs apartment, which I believe is the owner’s - were playing their music loud until 2am. I text the number provided by Sykes to say I find it a ridiculous time to be playing music that loud but still at the time of writing this review, I’ve had no reply!! But the music stopped and I heard people walking around so I know they were in. So a lovely stay in a nice place but the owners will NOT communicate with you. In fact we’ve had no communication at any point prior to or during our 3-night stay. Won’t stay again because of this rudeness.

  • "The apartment was very clean and comfortable."

There was an abundance of extras provided, e.g. enough toilet rolls to last the week! The owners were friendly but not at all intrusive and very understanding over a breakage. The apartment is ideally located in a picturesque village, with plenty of places to visit close by. I would not hesitate to rebook it, if we were in the area again.

  • "This is one of the best Sykes cottages I have stayed in."

Cark is a nice little village and we had no problem finding The Old Mill. I was only in contact with the owner once and that was via text prior to arrival to request a cot and Z-bed, I received a prompt reply to say it was no problem. The property is nicely decorated, has a nice layout and, most importantly of all, was spotless ! Everything you could need is provided, (except I couldn't find any salt and pepper, no big problem) and there was a nice welcome pack. The shop and pub are literally a minutes walk away with another pub a short walk up the hill. Both pubs do very nice meals, and in Flookburgh, which is about half a mile away, there is a Chinese takeaway/chip shop which is very good. All in all we had a great stay and I will definitely book the Old Mill again.

The utility room is perfect for cleaning muddy paws if required. We were very lucky to have fabulous weather during our stay. The owners were lovely and friendly so were local people. We enjoyed our time in Cark and Cartmel, we did long walks with our dogs locally and further afield. We would definitely book this property again.

  • "We arrived around 7."

30pm , looking for the old mill , when in fact it was a totally different name , 11 Millbrook (I think ) , so had to call the owner , bearing in mind it was dark , and pouring in rain , he was very vague with directions , still couldn’t find it , we turned down the wrong track after that another gentleman we asked didn’t know the name , but a soon as we said holiday cottage ahh that’s the next turn , so we found it I think the owner did come out with his Brolly ☂️ So we eventually found the place to park grabbed a few things from the car Went to get in , mmm no lights on had to use phone torch to open the key safe which was disgusting , once inside the cottage , there was a switch just inside the door for the porch light .. why not put this on when your guests hadn’t arrived if it’s dark , after all the owner is upstairs , something so simple to make life easier , been mentioned a couple of times in the reviews . Once in the cottage it was freezing , heating was not on , so we had to go around turning all the radiators on , not good when your wet and cold . However once turned on the cottage soon heated up and was lovely and cosy We then went over to the Engine for a meal , what a lovely pub , meal huge portion , stuffed , back to unpack and chill , unfortunately the chef has quit so check if they have a new one The cottage itself is very charming, and cosy , there are very thoughtful touches like tea coffee sugar milk(4pints) and some jam Washing up liquid , tea towel and towel and hand wash Loads of dishwasher tablets , was a novelty for us as we’re old school Washing capsules provided as well , wish I known as brought my own All the cleaning things you needed were also provided so you didn’t have to get anything Also a load of toilet rolls I must say I loved the Lakeland saucepans , might have to treat myself The cottage only has basic sky non of the add on’s which was a little deceiving when it said sky , we had to ring the owner to activate the Netflix as not working .. should be checked before guests move in To bed , very firm double bed with flat pillows , neither of us got any sleep the first night and went out to purchase our own pillows the next day Very quiet cottage apart from the gravel road right outside where residents go up and down , but you get used to it , you can just hear the stream Patio furniture needs replacing rusty with big holes in We had a lovely rest after sorting things out here The shower over the bath was lovely but in the wrong position , awkward for walking disabled hubby to get into , would of been getter at the end of the bath , nothing to grab onto , ie at the end of the bath by the taps there’s a wall to use , just for info

Also touches such as Milk, tea, some nice biscuits etc. There is no garden- just a little yard but a lovely aspect over the river. The only reason I gave it 4 not 5 was because as the weather was so wet we spent more time chilling , playing games , watching a movie but this was marred by a lot of loud hammering/drilling / sawing (presumably upstairs being refurbished?

Own designated parking for 2 cars , there is a seperate loo and bathroom, very handy if you’re a family of 5 like us. Local Pub is ‘The Engine’ which is literally across the road about 50 yards away and opposite that is the local Shop. Another pub we used in Flookburgh which is approx 0.8 miles away is ‘The hope and Anchor’ very good food but you need to book. Fish and chip shop/Chinese takeaway in Flookburgh which is very good but please note shut on sundays! Another good eating pub is ‘The Pheasant’ not too far away which also operates a takeaway service. The cottage has a nice outside sitting area , the river is literally over the road outside cottage. Not too far from Bowness, Ambleside, Coniston etc.

It's large and airy and has plenty of space to relax and enjoy yourself. The furnishings are first class and there is such a lot provided for your stay by the host. Washing up liquid, washing tablets and toilet rolls were all provided for our arrival. The kitchen is very well equipped and has everything you would need to cook a first class meal. A lovely pub called The Engine Inn is within a stones throw and cooks fabulous meals. A shop is a very short walk away and if you don't feel like travelling far you can sit in the front garden listening to the river and watching the world go by. We certainly didn't feel anxious about visiting the area with the restrictions of Covid-19 in place. The property was very clean and plenty of hand washing products were provided. I would certainly recommend this property.
