Beautifully done out with ample room and everything you need for a quiet stay in the country. The owners were lovely and informative of the area and there were farm animals to enjoy as well as a beautiful view. A stones throw from Alston which had lovely boutique shops to explore as well as a railway station which also provides a lovely walk alongside the rails. Would highly reccommend this cottage to anyone wanting to getaway from it all, relax and spend some time rejuvenating in the English countryside.

! Can’t recommend this place highly enough- the only tip I can give you is to pack your full length wellies to be able to go down the Killhope Lead Mines and currently it’s free (but sadly they don’t hire out wellies). Great days out within a short drive away as well as plenty of interesting walks on the doorstep. Trips to Hadrians Wall and Barnard Castle recommended and the Alston House Hotel serve excellent dishes, would recommend to everyone. Plenty more still to do in the area, would happily stay here again.

  • "Middlefell View Cottage is definitely one of the best Sykes holiday homes that we have experienced over many years of using the company."

Location, cleanliness, warmth, comfort and especially the owners are what make this cottage so enjoyable. If there is a drawback it is worth noting that there are a lot of steps; up to two of the bedrooms and from there down to the bathroom. But for two people there is a lovely double bedroom downstairs and a shower room for less able holiday makers.

Fantastic welcome pack full of goodies, the cake was the best. We take our bikes on holiday and this cottage was listed as having lockable bike storage, however, the out-house we were given did not have a lock so we had to supply our own lock to keep our bikes safe. Disappointing.

Tracey, we're sorry the lack of a lock spoiled your stay with us - had you asked, we would have supplied one though it has to be said, that due to our location, the likelihood of theft is very low. Property Owner

  • "We were hugely impressed with the investment and effort that the owners of the cottage went to in order to keep safe during the pandemic."

They had thought out everything- from putting dishes and all cutlery, even if already clean, through dishwasher, ready to unload by ourselves upon arrival; to leaving us a supply of sanitiser and wipes; to carefully decontaminating fully between guests. We had concerns about holidaying during these difficult times, and our minds were put at ease once we realised how seriously the hosts took our safety. Thank you, Dick and Diane! On top of this the house is clean, tidy and very comfortable. The kitchen was well appointed and we made full use of it as we decided to cook in rather than eat out, the beds were comfortable as was the lounge area. We enjoyed sharing the farm with the wandering turkeys and chickens, and other well-treated farm animals such as pigs and sheep. We were left a lovely basket upon arrival of fresh bread, home-made jam, butter, cake, tea, coffee with milk in the fridge. It was very welcome and kind. We were able to access some fabulous walks in the North Pennines, all within a 30 minute drive, and we barely scratched the surface. Can recommend Ashgill Force and High/Low force walks, and there were many more we didn't have time to experience. We would love to come back and do more and can highly recommend the cottage

The owner met us when we arrived, gave us the tour and even had homemade goodies for us to tuck into before we had unpacked. The kids were introduced to the pigs while we kept the dogs from trying to say hello to the chickens. We did keep him on the lead to get to the car though, because the 2 turkeys and various chickens were very friendly! The cottage was extremely well kitted out and was spotlessly clean. Our hosts left a wonderful hamper for us which was very much appreciated. The beds were super comfortable. Showers excellent and lots of hot water. Everything was fabulous. We spent our week discovering the surrounding area, from hadrians wall, nenthead mine, high force falls (stunning - you can walk under the waterfall and look for dancing fairies) and also walked direct from our cottage into Alston, which is a 4 mile round trip by the side of the river. The airy open plan living space has a roaring woodburning stove, which is ideal to curl up in front of, or why not sit beside sunny south-facing bay window with a book and soak up the country atmosphere?

Hudgill Farm Cottages

Alston 2 miles. These two sympathetically restored barn conversions, set next to the owners’ home, are joined via a lockable interconnecting door and are situated in a rural location, two miles from Alston in Cumbria. Overlooking sloping grassland leading down to the River Nent, the cottages occupy an idyllic setting, providing a quiet getaway for families and friends. Both cottages have been furnished and equipped to offer comfort, warmth and a welcoming return after an invigorating day in the Cumbrian countryside. Attention has been taken to retain and enhance the character of the building, with the exposed A frame beams and a large south-facing window where the old barn door used to be. Each property has its own private garden, whilst to the rear of the cottages is a lawned area where you can enjoy views over the valley. Footpaths lead across the moorland and the local area has very little light pollution, so this is just the spot for sitting back and stargazing beneath the night’s sky, before heading back inside for an evening by the woodburning stove. Nearby Alston retains its traditional country character, with a selection of welcoming pubs with open fires, serving real ale and good food. The Pennine Way also passes through the town, which is also on the C2C Cycle Route. With plenty of places to visit within an hour by car, including Hadrian's Wall, Beamish Open Air Museum, Durham Cathedral and the Lake District, these are perfect holiday cottages for a relaxing break.

About the location

ALSTON

Melmerby 8 miles; Penrith 18 miles; Stanhope 20 miles; Hexham 23 miles; Carlisle 29 miles; Barnard Castle 30 miles.

Alston is set in the North Pennines in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by a unique landscape of moorland, hills, rivers and waterfalls, and is England's highest market town. This intriguing town, with its cobbled streets and fascinating nooks and crannies, was the location for ITV's productions of Jane Eyre and Oliver Twist. Alston and the North Pennines have long inspired artists and writers; the poet and writer W H Auden loved the area and today Alston is an inspiration to the craftspeople who live and work there. There is a host of unusual shops in the town including quality crafts and galleries. Take a ride on one of the lovingly-restored steam and diesel engines through the beautiful scenery of the South Tyne valley on the South Tynedale Railway which runs from Alston through to Slaggyford. The River Tyne is also noted as one of the finest salmon rivers in England and day-ticket fishing is available locally. The North Pennines used to be one of the wealthiest lead mining centres in Europe, and the Killhope Lead Mining Museum offers a great family day out with interactive exhibitions. With the drive along the A686 recognised by the AA as one of the world's best drives, and northern Cumbria, County Durham and Northumberland, all within easy reach, this makes a superb base.
