The charming old village of Orton sits in a secluded position on the eastern fringe of the Lake District National Park. Along with its better-known neighbours of Kendal, Sedbergh and Appleby-in-Westmorland, the area is surrounded by lovely rolling countryside and beautiful scenery. Above the village sits Orton Scar, a limestone hill, used in days gone by to warn the village of Scottish raiders and popular today with walkers. The village centre has an imposing 16th century church, local pub serving good food, a Post Office/shop and the famous handmade chocolate shop and tearoom. A lovely village green surrounded by 17th and 18th Century cottages adds to its charm and there is a farmers’ market in the village square on the second Saturday of every month. Take a short drive and discover the unspoilt lake of Haweswater, or take advantage of the excellent road links to the Lake District, the Eden Valley and the Yorkshire Dales.

Previous visitors' comments about The Penthouse:
The property was ideal for a romantic getaway, very quiet but not too far from the sites of the Lake District.
Mrs Latham, Cheddar, September 2012
Great holiday accommodation, very well maintained and the attention to detail is second to none. It is easily accessible for all the amenities that the Lake District has to offer. I would highly recommend this holiday apartment to friends and family.
Ms Paddington-Hughes, Ely, September 2012
By far the best property we've stayed in and booked through Sykes Cottages over the last 5-6 years. A real gem of a property!
Mr McDermott, Glasgow, August 2012
The standard of The Penthouse was just fantastic. From picking up the key from the very friendly and helpful key-holders to arriving at the electric gates that let us in to the beautiful property we were impressed. The inside of the house was amazing and when we got into the penthouse, we were blown away. We had a wonderful holiday and were sorry to have to leave.
