  • "We had a great stay."

The cottage is cosy and well equipped for a lovely stay. Being February it was quite cold outside but the cottage warms up quickly and the log fire was very welcome :) Located well for having good days out with an amazing pub in the village for a delicious meal closer to home. Would 100% recommend and will definitely go back :)

We had a very cold and snowy week but we were warm and comfortable and the log burning stove was a extra bonus. Everything we needed was at the cottage and local shops in Appelby had all we wanted. The very local Sandford Arms was very welcoming and both the beer and meals were very reasonable. We have foud that it has been difficult to find a property that welcomes 3 (mid sized) dogs but the wooden and stone floors are perfect for pets. Would definatly recommend.

It’s well maintained, spotlessly clean , extremely comfortable- I could go on ! Well perhaps I will! Homemade bread and jam , biscuits and milk on arrival. Complimetary tea and coffee. Treats and towels for our 3 dogs, Torches, umbrella, every cooking utensil you could think of ! This cottage is amazing. The owners are just across the back of the cottage and available if needed but kept a discreet distance throughout. Oh and we saw a red squirrel! Well done

There is everything supplied that you need for a relaxing break. Spotlessly clean and we'll maintained. The area is very quiet, lovely walks straight from the front door with no need to drive. Local pub not even a 5 minute walk away really good food with friendly staff and locals. Highly recommend property. A credit to the owners.

We felt settled as soon as we unpacked. The welcome basket and personalised message was delightful. The surrounding area is beautiful we took some bird nuts which attracted loads of bird and red squirrels! They were in the trees opposite the cottage so we were glad we bought the binoculars. Our lakeland experience was excellent and we'll be back for sure.

Exceeded all our expectations. Tracey and Gary had left fresh bread, butter and homemade jam along with trays for the dogs. Just a lovely touch. The village is quiet with some nice walks and a pub. You can easily get to all the main towns and walks. We visited Kendal, Keswick which has a lovely park for the dogs and a couple of the little villages. Everybody is very friendly. Would highly recommend this cottage. It’s a little bit of paradise.

The property is in a great location, easy to get to the lakes, Ullswater and Derwent, also the nearby towns of Appleby, Kirkby Stephen and others. There's plenty of nice places to eat within a short drive but also a well equipped kitchen if you don't fancy going out. The area at front of the property is great for sitting out in the sunshine and safely enclosed if you are taking your dog, also not overlooked. The area is very peaceful and quiet, with a friendly local pub in staggering distance

The welcome with ours and the dogs names was a lovely touch as well as the milk in the fridge, welcome snack and the dog box with chews and useful bits for them. Everything was labelled well and the information pack was useful down to the photocopied maps of local walks. The kitchen had all the utensils needed to make meals and the useful porch had various items like torches/umbrellas etc that could be borrowed if needed. The cottage is situated on a ‘No through’ road so it is extremely quiet from traffic noise.

From the moment you arrive it feels welcoming and homely. The added touches of the milk, bread and jam for humans were much appreciated after a long drive. Some properties say animals are welcome but it can feel like they're not really welcome with the numerous rules and lack of space for them. However, Chapel Cottage is truly special! The towels, water bowl, poo bags, collar tag and treats warmed our hearts and we knew we were in a fabulous place. The pub is very close but you hear no noise - it really is an escape from busy lifestyles. The pub does excellent food and even takeaways! We really loved the other additional touches in the cottage; the maps for local walks and the picnic basket for us to use. It's an old building and can feel a little chilly but nothing the heaters and woodstove can't fix. The woodstove was LOVELY! We were really sad to be leaving Chapel Cottage and will certainly return.

Excellent provisions for everything, extensive information manual with guides on how to use certain appliances, explanations about what switches do what in the house and useful tips about local attractions and walks. The cottage was lively and clean, one minor point I would have found helpful is a better hoover as I was trying to keep the place fairly tidy (and hoover up the dog hairs) but the hoover wasn't great. The beds a super comfy and very cosy at night. The advertised 'enclosed garden' I would like to just highlight is enclosed but not very helpful if you have a big dog as they can easily jump over the wall. And there is no grass area that is enclosed to let the dogs out freely. Saying that, it is such a small village you can walk the dogs off lead to the grass area just down the road and th locals are all very friendly. Overall great location to travel into the lakes, the yorkshire dales and the north pennines!

Thank you for your feedback - we have now purchased a new hoover. We do feel that the description (as an 'enclosed yard') and photos on the website are an accurate representation of the outside space at Chapel Cottage. Thank you for pointing out that there is plenty of green space in the village. Property Owner

We arrived in the middle of a storm on boxing day. The cottage was warm and welcoming. It has been fitted out and decorated to a very high standard, with everything well thought through. We are a family of four and there was plenty of room. The local area was lovely, a quiet village location with plenty of walks on your doorstep and appelby in westmorland just a short drive away with good shops and facilities. We would not hesitate to recommend this cottage, thank you so much for a fantastic break!

The Chapel cottage was great, and the location was close to A66 which is the main road all the way through the Lake district. (just wish Sandford had a corner shop lol.) We would definitely go back. Tony & Sue.

About the location

APPLEBY-IN-WESTMORLAND

Penrith 14 miles.

The historic town of Appleby-in-Westmorland lies in a loop of the River Eden and is overlooked by the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with the Lake District Fells showing on the western horizon. Set at the heart of the lush Eden Valley and steeped in history, this is one of the loveliest towns in the north of England and was originally the county town of Westmorland. Appleby is nestled between the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales, so guests can enjoy the contrasting scenery of these two National Parks, plus numerous walking and cycling opportunities as well as the fantastic leisure centre in the town. Appleby has a wonderful selection of quality independent shops, cafes and delicatessens selling locally produced food and crafts. The picturesque street of Boroughgate, with some interesting old buildings, is at the heart of the town and links the well-preserved Norman Castle with the fine medieval Church of St. Lawrence. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain, and still today many of the old steam trains wend their way along this line and over the historic and awe-inspiring Ribblehead viaduct. With the delightful Ullswater and the magnificent Lake District within easy reach, this is an ideal holiday location.
