  • "The cottage was cute and cosy and location excellent."

The facilities not so great. The cupboards with pots, pans, cups etc all smelt badly of damp and mould which made my chest bad and everything had to be washed before and after every meal. The oven and grill had been reported as not working on 04/23 and this had not been fixed by our stay 09/23 which is unacceptable. We had taken food to cook meals with (as we have specific dietary requirements), which went to waste unless able to microwave or cook on the hob and had to eat at the pub which was good by the way but an expense we hadn’t factored in. The train service from the property is excellent and the local walks really good, we did lots and were blessed with the weather. We loved the village but for the price and the smell of this property, would look for a different property next time unless changes were made.

Location, appearance, facilities are spot on. St Bees is a beautiful, unspoilt part of our country too.

  • "There were a few negative remarks in previous reviews (perhaps they have been watching too many " Four in a bed" TV shows)."

But we have to say that there were no issues when we stopped. Everything was as described or better. A lovely little well kept cottage in a beautiful location. We would thoroughly recommend.

  • "Constructive feedback: no need for the heating to have been on when we got there; the bedding was lovely (albeit the zip on one pillow was broken), but more suited to winter than spring/summer as it was a bit hot in the night."

These are the most minor quibbles. The cottage is lovely, and just right for a getaway for 2 people. Clean and comfortable, with an excellent and informative folder of information.

  • "Nice little cottage in quiet little village, disappointed about no parking and also the general cleanliness of the cottage."

Very dirty, dog hairs everywhere , also dog cover over settee so not comfy. Appliances not clean, (not sure if this is left to previous occupants to clean). Table broken so when you pull it out to sit round it you have to re position the legs. Nice bed, very comfy, but that was its only +. Would recommend for dog walkers who don't mind the dirt/dog smell. Wouldn't say it is appropriate for small family like ourselves.

  • "We had a great time in the Thimble cottage and St Bees."

The location is great, 15 mins walk to beach with great coast walks.. As mentioned before, parking is not right in front of cottage, however station car park is few meters round the corner. (free parking) The cottage is well equipped and has everything what is needed. Just 3 things, which knocked out one star - the carpet need to be changed or cleaned properly as it really smell badly (the first thing which hit your nose once opening the cottage door - and is not pleasant) . The dining table has very wobbly legs, so there is slight risk your dinner might end up on the floor. The front door (from inside of the property) would love proper clean and lick of paint too. As the property allows dogs, it needs a bit of extra attention with cleaning (that's more for the agency who maintain the property). As we mostly stayed outdoors, we had absolutely great stay.

  • "Parking and garden was an issue at this property."

I parked adjacent to Thimbles cottage as advertised in Sykes descriptions only to get stuck. Took a day to get the car out with the help and assistance of local neighbours. This was when I discovered the parking area and garden didn’t belong to Thimbles. It needs updating so others don’t fall victim. Unable to park on roads as most are double yellow no parking although Council provide a free car park next to railway station, only 2/3 minutes away. Neighbours told me this wasn’t the first time this has happened and it ruined our visit to this lovely place. Thimbles cottage is very cold and no double glazing and although fitted with underfloor heating it was out of order. Even in bed the rooms were very cold. Please update your description and facilities available for this property.

  • "On arrival, sat 2 nov."

I found food left on the dining chair and no scatter cover cushions on sofa . An agent did come out to remove food , and also try to rid the strong smell of urine from the bathroom. Later I discovered there was no heating in the bathroom and so no drying rail. There was an overall unpleasant smell downstairs. As I expected agents to return Monday to remedy sofa I issues , I did not report heating issues immediately. With daily calls to Sykes , the cushion covers were not sorted until Wednesday.. 5 days into a 7 day rental.. this after being initially told they would be out on Tuesday, leaving me unable to relax in anticipation of when they would arrive..also on closer inspection, there was a huge amount of debris under the sofa cushions. When they did eventually show , whilst not in , they moved my toothbrush, which surely they have no right. Heating issue was never sorted, or any feedback whilst there given .. this was November... Insultingly I was then charged for extra cleaning costs for traces of dried mud on bed linen ..zoomed into ... Remember there were no drying options, it's dog friendly, and the nature of the building is two rooms...a stray bit of tissue paper , and leaving the dust pan & brush out . You'd hope laundering of bed linen, was of a standard cleaning procedure... To be charged for extra cleaning questions exactly what there re-rental Standard is ... Obviously low ... especially into what I walked into St bees is a wonderful location, but staying in thimble cottage tarnishes the whole experience.. Nb. The owner refuses any recompense

  • "We booked this cottage after finding it on Sykes website where it gave the impression in the photograph that there was a parking space alongside the cottage."

On arrival the space was occupied by a vehicle and a sign showed it belonged to the next door cottage. There were double yellow lines preventing parking in all the immediate areas apart from a stretch along Finkle Street which was never available because of residents parking. The cottage itself was cleverley laid out bearing in mind its small size, but unfortunately it was badly let down by the problem of using the grill on the electric cooker which would trip out after a couple of minutes use. I was very surprised to read the comments in the visitors book that this was a problem that had been pointed out on 23rd-26th April, again on August 9th-11th and yet again on August 12th-18th and nothing seems to have been done to repair the problem. We were unable to cook the breakfast food we had brought with us which resulted in extra costs and waste. Bearing this in mind I feel some sort of refund is due and since you are holding my credit carde details in case of any damage we caused (which did not occur), I look forward to receiving a refund of say £50 for our inconvenience. Regards Mike & Barbara Boyle

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry that you found the property photograph misleading; unfortunately, it is impossible to take a photo of the outside of the cottage from that angle without including the neighbours' parking space. However, the property description clearly outlines that roadside parking only is available. The railway station car park is less than 200m away, and free all year round. I am also sorry that you experienced issues with the use of the grill. It is a shame that you did not notify either Sykes Cottages or Custom Clean (the management company) of this at the time, so that the problem could be addressed. An electrician had, in fact, rebalanced the fuse board after the issue was originally highlighted in April, and the property has since been rewired to avoid any further issues. Nevertheless, as a gesture of goodwill, you have been offered a refund for the inconvenience you experienced. Property Owner

  • "Very well decorated and cute cottage."

Ideal space for 2 people staying. We also had our dog. Everything you need but we would have liked an iron and iron board. Could also do with some curtains in bedroom as your head is right next to the window and if sunny it is very bright. Bed is comfy and we enjoyed some nice meals in the cottage. There are also 3 pubs a short walk away. 2 offer food. All dog friendly. The village is pretty and beach is beautiful.

Thank you very much for your feedback. I am always looking for ways to improve the property, so an iron and ironing board are now available for guests. A curtain rail has also been installed in the bedroom, in addition to the blinds which were already in place. I am glad that you enjoyed your stay overall, and hope you are able to return soon! Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry that you were unable to get the heating to work, and it is a shame that you did not contact either Sykes Cottages or Custom Clean (the management company) at the time issue arose to resolve it. I am also sorry about the absence of a light above the mirror in the bathroom; given the presence of several spotlights in the ceiling, it was not felt that this would be a necessity. Property Owner
