  • "This is our third stay at the cottages twice in Elsa and one in Skipper we just love it."

Just a few little problems with the gardners especally when they start at 7 in the morning I can understand these jobs have to be done but surely later on and also letting us know this was going to be happening . Also entering the back garden without our knowledge ,there was also a slight smell coming from the cupboard in the hall on reading the last review it was reported before, But it is an amazing place to stay will be going back again . The grounds and wildlife are amazing

  • "The property and location was exactly as depicted in the listing."

Absolutely beautiful location and grounds. There were some works going on that meant part of the grounds were inaccessible which would have been nice to know beforehand. We had a question re the heating which was answered very quickly when we messaged. The beds were a little bit too soft which accounts for the scoring on comfort. There was a slight smell we noticed in the hallway - we did not raise it, as it did not affect the rest of the accommodation. We will be back!

  • "The property was comfortable and warm, although not ideal stairs if have mobility issues."

sad there was not much at the site as the main house was under repair and some walking areas were blocked off, the grounds needed some attention, gates down and broken, with no clear walking path around the estate. plus the driveway to and from the property was full of very big pot holes. The instructions to leave the property on our last day and get through the locked gates was not clear in the manual and had to seek help. Must say that the welcome pack on arrival was a bit dissapointing, with just a few tea bags and little pots of milk. Also strangley we had an iron at the house but not an ironing board! Overall the property was lovely, and modern, plus very well placed for a lot of the attractions

Good quality accomodation. Home from home. No complaints. We enjoyed our week's stay, driving to nearby locations to explore and walk the dog. One circular walk we did was directly from the property. Secure garden was excellent for our dog. Great to see Blackpool tower lit up on the horizon at night.

Thoroughly enjoyed our first holiday with our rescue dog Ted. If we had to look for a niggle, a king sized bed would be a little more comfortable but this didn’t impact on our stay at all.

  • "Had a great relaxing time at Elsa cottage with my dog."

Lovely walks in the grounds but take mosquito spray! They quite bad and seemed to like me! A few things I'd like to point out, a coffee table or nest of tables would be great in living room and there was no clock anywhere but I had my watch! Also no mirror in downstairs bathroom. Washing line was great but I couldn't find any pegs? Sorry if I missed them somewhere. I think you would benefit from some insect screens up at the doors too as flies straight inside when door open. Garden was fantastic, chickens grazing on the other side of the fence, view was lovely to the massive fell in the distance. I certainly enjoyed eating in the garden listening to birds singing and the trees whispering! (Until other holiday makers came but can't control that!) Bed was comfy , thought it would be too soft but I had no problem. Everywhere clean, lots of utensils, plates and cups and washing up things left to use. A guide to the cottage and area was great with lots of information. A small tub of tea/coffee making facilities and some biscuits were nice. Lots to do in and around area. Morecambe Bay, Heysham beach and 6 minute drive away was a lovely small forest with stream and free parking called Scorton Picnic Site. Windermere was 45 min drive. Would stay here again.

  • "We absolutely loved our stay here."

We didn’t want to leave to come home. The cottage was a peaceful retreat and very well maintained. It was very well appointed (loved the kitchen tap) and altogether quite luxurious. Our English Setter loved the fully enclosed garden. Being enclosed was essential with the amount of rabbits, hares and pheasants in the grounds. We had some super walks in the grounds of Wyreside Hall, especially along the river. We had glorious weather so sitting out in the garden, with a cuppa, listening to the birds was a joy. On a housekeeping note we would have found a vacuum cleaner useful, as I like to keep things spick and span as we go through the holiday… especially with a dog. (My hubby says I’m obsessive!) The broom with dust pan and brush worked, but made the job labour intensive. Instructions on how to turn on the cooker hob would have been useful. It kept my hubby busy finding how to turn it on, on google. We loved our holiday here at Elsa and would love to stay again. The cottage is so well placed for the Lake District, The Dales and the Coastal areas.

Gorgeous. The cottage is as described, in fact the photos do not do the property justice. Very modern facilities, lovely and warm. Showers en suite are excellent. Great value for money definitely. No noise could be heard from the adjacent cottages except occasional dog bark. Enclosed garden was just right for our hound. A couple of minor negative points but worthy of mention as if dont say how can they be rectified 1) light fittings in bathrooms have various dead insects inside. Too many to have just occured. Maybe could be added to cleaning check list? 2) Beds very low for us, felt like sleeping on the floor. Maybe a topper could be added? Very minor negatives. We would rebook and will at a different time of year when the outside can be enjoyed more

Thank you for your positive feedback, and that you will look to re-book in the better weather. We have arranged for the lights in the bedroom to be replaced, Fly's see to be able to get inside the lamps somehow. Beds are very interesting topic, heights, type of mattress, soft, medium, hard are all personal choices, we will consider adding toppers as you suggested. Wyreside Cottages Property Owner

  • "We booked Elsa for a long weekend as we were attending a wedding in the area."

Unfortunately on our first evening and during our first use of the kitchen we discovered a leak from the kitchen sink waste which was dripping very fast into the cupboard beneath. We called for assistance and someone came to attempt to fix but announced that the waste system was blocked and could not be fixed that evening so suggested we move to Bilbo cottage which was adjacent and, rather luckily, was vacant. Hence we had to pack everything up and move. Not a good start! The rest of our comments are therefore for cottage Bilbo. The first thing to say is that, given our first evening experience, we expected someone to call or pop round the following morning to check that everything was now ok with our stay - those expectations were clearly too high as we never saw anyone for the rest of our stay. Bilbo, like the other cottages, is set in the most amazing grounds with the backdrop of Wyreside Hall providing stunning scenery. Bilbo is very sparsely furnished - the lounge really needs some more soft furnishings and some softer lighting e.g. lamps, as there is only harsh ceiling lights. There are absolutely no pictures, prints or mirrors on any of the walls in the cottage - given that this is itself a wedding venue the lack of a full length mirror is surprising. The cottage has the feel of a holiday 'house' rather than a 'home' and feels a little unfinished. The kitchen equipment is adequate - although the lack of a teapot is notable and very surprising (for 6 people!!), a comment that has been made in previous reviews and clearly no action taken. Unfortunately the pizza trays needed a good clean before being used as both were full of grease. The dishwasher is very small so be prepared to wash-up if you cook a meal for 6. It also needed 'RinseAid' as per the warning light - however none was provided. The cottage sleeps 6 supposedly, however the sofa in the lounge has room for only 3 perhaps 4 people. If all 6 want to watch the TV then 2 need to sit on dining chairs as there is not enough comfortable seating. The listing describes a DVD player which was not present, as well as a selection of books and DVD's which again we could not find. Complementary coffee, tea and UHT milk sachets had been provided - unfortunately when we tried to use the milk it was clearly off. An inspection of the best before date revealed that all the sachets had a best before date of February 2022. We also found some complementary biscuits - once again their best before date was September 2022. In the en-suite bathroom the toilet cistern required adjusting to stop constant flow and the sink plug would not engage properly hence the sink would not hold water. The sink in the main bathroom was similar. It's worth noting that we had family and friends in cottage Hudson which was also adjacent - many of our comments apply to Hudson as well, in particular the furnishings, general feel and the out of date milk etc. In summary a disappointing stay for all the reasons outlined. We regularly use Airbnb so this was a departure for us - in our opinion there is a stark contrast. Safe to say we will not be using Sykes cottages again.

  • "Ideal for visiting Lancaster and the Forest of Bowland but otherwise disappointing."

There is an extremely long unsurfaced and potholed drive to the group of properties. From the cottages you see a wall and a tree to the front and, in our case, the car of the cottage next door. To the back there are large sheds which are 'disguised' by a large hideously decorated screen. Be prepared to take your own teapot and coffee percolator and even a dish cloth. The dishwasher is redundant and very limited crockery is provided so you need to wash up after every meal. This could be a wonderful cottage if a little thought was put into the surroundings and content of the property.

We are very sorry you needed to leave this negative response. The scores for this very well presented cottage are usually in the 90's, and mostly 100%. There is a long drive as the cottages are set elevated in their ground overlooking the River Wyre. The driveway is repaired and maintained regularly. We do leave our telephone numbers and respond immediately. We are unsure why when there are 100acres of ground to enjoy, there would be a need to comment on the decorative hoarding we have installed. We appreciate your feedback and will look to rectify some of the points you have raised. Property Owner

However the lounge needs soft lighting and throws to be more comfortable and the kitchen needs to be better equipped with crockery, glasses etc. New, clean mugs are a must. Also I’d expect soap / hand wash in each bathroom for basic hygiene. The beds were very uncomfortable which affected sleep and new mattresses are needed. We had some lovely days out especially the waterfalls and a lovely walk along the coast at Heysham. We usually get inspiration for local places of interest to visit from the visitors book but this is the first cottage we have visited where there has been no visitor book why?

However, some simple/standard things didn't work as expected. We could not figure out how to work the TV at all! It should be simple to at least watch free to air channels. In this case it was impossible. Either the TV was not set up properly or more instructions needed to be provided! The key fob to electronically open the front gates didn't work. We had to get out of the car each time to punch in the code. It was raining and so we got wet! The wifi works great on the ground floor but not at all on the upper floor (i.e. the bedrooms). No soap provided in any of the bathrooms ... this is a minimum usually provided at similar properties. We still enjoyed our stay very much and would encourage others to visit but it would be good if these little problems could be fixed in future. It should be quite straightforward to do so. Thanks.

The grounds were lovely and we spent much time exploring the local area. The cottage was decorated to a high spec but was missing a few fundamentals that we would have expected from a holiday let. We had read previous reviews regarding kitchen equipment and utensils so we brought our own baking trays etc. but things like hand wash and a towels in each of the bathrooms would have been nice. Also there was only 4 plates/sets of cutlery so we were constantly washing up (or running the dishwasher), extras of each would have been nice. Also the cutlery was very cheap. When you've spent so much money decorating the cottage to such a good spec, little things like cheap cutlery kind of let it down a bit. They were helpful when called upon though. We asked for a high chair and some chopping boards which they brought quickly. This may seem a little negative but we really had a lovely time there. We would move there if we could!

The cottage is in a lovely location.........when finished Wyreside Hall will be an outstanding venue for all sorts of functions. Hopefully the access road will be a priority of the development. The cottage was beautifully fitted with very modern conveniences in the kitchen and bathrooms. • "Firstly , we would like to say that the location is on the whole exquisite, and the conversion / configuration of the property is fairly well done."

However, there is much evidence of construction work within close proximity to the accommodation. Potential interested parties should be aware that the 'front on' photograph of Elsa does not accurately reflect the actual property, in that the windows , top & bottom to the right of the front door, belong in fact to the adjacent property , Bilbo. This gives the impression that Elsa is much bigger than it actually is . In addition to which there are most definitely some issues in relation to this property which sadly impinged negatively upon our stay. For example, the listing clearly stipulated a DVD , games and books, none of which were present . The crockery was mismatched and comprised of 3 huge soup bowls, thus meaning children had 2 inches of cereal 'lost' in a massive bowl . No microwave items at all. . No knife, save for 1 huge bread knife for everything , 3 extremely cheap inferior pans more suited to camping . No vegetable peeler , no wooden spoons, nor roasting dishes , etc etc , basically a very under resourced , poorly equipped kitchen . It would appear that the same applied to the other properties on this site given the guests advised us of same in fact It would seem that they went out and purchased utensils as did we. Moreover, this seems a contradiction in terms of the great effort of investment made in the conversion yet the poor quality mattresses and bedding insitu which undoubtedly reflects poorly on the lack of comforts culminating in disturbed sleep. Other aspects, albeit less intrusive but nonetheless relevant , include , no table or floor lamps , simply beaming bright lights in the lounge as an only option. But on the contrary , we reported that the bulbs to the external lights of the property , back and front all needed replacing? or fixing ?given they did not function, hence extreme blackness when exiting or entering the accom .There is also an 'issue' with the internet , dubious intermittent reception interfering with access which was in any case solely limited to the lounge area , unfortunately no internet access whatsoever upstairs which is very restricting. The TV too for some reason 'freezes' . Batteries in the remote had expired. We did liaise at the material time with the assigned contact person , who was friendly and arrived with a knife , dish and several games , but we would have preferred not to have had to highlight any problems given most people want escapism and don't relish wasting their holiday time . We had reasonable expectations of Elsa but felt let down. We registered our concern when asked for feedback upon our return and Sykes intended to speak with the owners who in turn state that the description is inaccurate simply meaning that a DVD should never have been listed. Sykes also reported that the Owner(s) stated they are not willing to make any refund nor gesture of goodwill . In our opinion this again reflects badly especially the incremental aspects of the complaint so it does not restore our confidence in the entire process and I suspect nor will it promote confidence in further bookings .

I hadn't paid much attention to where I'd booked just that I needed an enclosed garden. So imagine my surprise as I arrived at the gates to this beautiful property! I couldn't have wished for a more perfect setting, it was absolutely beautiful. The cottage was everything I needed and with a fully enclosed and spacious garden for Hector to play in. There were only a few other people staying in the other cottages so we pretty much walked the entire grounds without bumping into anyone at all. Also blessed with super hot weather for our entire stay it couldn't have been anymore perfect. Sat out front of the hall in the evening as the sun was going down over the golden hay fields below with Hector lay relaxed at my feet. Priceless. Thank you for such a wonderful stay, I can't believe this place is only 45mins away from home. It felt like another world and time all together.
