About the location

Penrith 14 miles.

The historic town of Appleby, set at the heart of the lush Eden Valley, is one of the loveliest towns in the north of England and was originally the county town of Westmorland. The picturesque street of Boroughgate, with some interesting old buildings, is at the heart of the town and links the well-preserved Norman Castle with the fine medieval Church of St. Lawrence. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain, and still today many of the old steam trains wend their way along this line and over the historic and awe-inspiring Ribblehead viaduct. Visit Appleby in June and experience the atmosphere of the three hundred-year old Horse Fair. With the delightful Ullswater and the magnificent Lake District within easy reach, this is an ideal holiday location.

The cottage was 5 star, everything that you could have asked for was there, spotlessly clean in every room and very comfortable. A great base from which to explore the Lake District and it's towns and villages. Information for local areas was available, plus the owners gave us some great information on how to get to certain places of interest. Would highly recommend staying in Elm Tree Cottage.

Mrs Bishop, Stourbridge, March 2014

The location was perfect as a base for visiting the North Lakes and North Yorkshire. The owners were very friendly and helpful; the welcome pack was much appreciated. The cottage was warm, cosy and immaculate and provided everything we needed for our stay. A perfect bolt hole.

Superb accommodation we couldn't fault it, furnishing and fittings were of a very high standard. Location was good for access to all main attractions in and around the area. Would thoroughly recommend both the accommodation, and area.

Mrs Lively, Belper, August 2013

Friendly & helpful approach of the owners. Beautifully appointed cottage and peaceful setting in the pretty village, yet so convenient for access to the A66 and beyond. Great attention to detail, including a small library of books and DVDs, all the information on the surrounding area and instructions for the operation of every item in the property.

Mr MacKenzie, Grantown-on-Spey, June 2013

Wonderful owners. In a quiet location with good parking. A lovely cottage, we had a great weekend.

Mr Vinson, Preston, May 2013

The cottage was in brand new condition and beautifully appointed with everything required for our holiday. The owners were very friendly and helpful. The village was very conveniently placed for some excellent walking in the local hills. We would certainly recommend the cottage to our friends as one of the best we have ever stayed in.
