Location: Glassonby

Penrith 10 miles.

The attractive, unspoilt rural village of Glassonby is ideally placed for exploring the Lake District, North Pennine and the beautiful Eden Valley. Situated on the famous Coast to Coast cycle route the small village is made up of a scattering of dwellings, old farmhouses and a lovely children’s playground. Deer and hares are seen regularly and it is one of the few areas in the country which is still home to the native red squirrel. Bird lovers will enjoy the varied bird life around the country lanes and surrounding fields. Curlews, oystercatchers and lapwings are seen and heard regularly over the summer months and fieldfares are frequent winter visitors. The River Eden runs nearby and the area is renowned for its excellent trout and salmon fishing, plus walking, cycling, canoeing and climbing. The Eden Gorge, between Lazonby and Armathwaite, is one of Cumbria's best-kept secrets, and is well worth exploring. The local railway station is a stop on the Settle-to-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain, and where today many old steam trains still wend their way through some of the finest countryside in Britain. Within easy reach of the village is Rheged – an innovative visitor centre with shops, restaurants, exhibitions and a giant cinema screen showing educational and informative films. Brougham Castle (The Windsor of the North), Long Meg and her daughters (the 3rd largest stone circle in England) and the historic city of Carlisle and Hadrian’s Wall are all a short drive away, as is the stunning scenery of both the Lake District, Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales, or you might like to visit Dalemain Historic House, featured in a television production of Jane Eyre.
