  • "The only word I can use to describe the property is “awesome”."

It was perfectly ordered, clean, tidy, spacious, and extremely confortable. We had everything we need and even extra and nice features of the house that weren’t expecting. The hot tub was an amazing plus for the property, the view from there was just like the movies and it isn’t a joke. We went during winter and even on this season, we really enjoyed going for a walk in the surroundings because the landscape is just unreal. I truly want to thank the hosts for making up one of the best stays in our lifes!

Really shows opinions being taken on board and we loved using it during our stay. I’m not sure whether it was there at our last stay or if we just discovered it this time

  • "Firstly this property is absolutely stunning, the most idyllic views."

When we turned up the place was nice and warm and a hamper had been left for us. A lovely touch. We had arrived a bit early but the keys were in the safe and property was vacant. We did need to contact the owners Adam and Laura just to ask where the fifth bedroom was as it was an annexe around the side. We used the hot tub on the Friday and when we went to go back in on the Saturday noticed a bad smell and the water had gone green. Called them out and we were asked 'what have you done, what's happened to it' It was emptied and refilled with hot water. Once it was full we went back in for a short time. On the Sunday morning we checked on it and that bad smell was back again. When they came back for a second time my friend who has a hot tub herself asked them how often the levels were checked and what chemicals were used. She was told that it was down to her 'friends' abusing it on the Friday night which is just ridiculous as it wasn't damaged. The bromine level wasn't right and it can turn the water. She was also told we hadn't showered before going in and my friend said how do you know that and was told we had said we hadn't. An absolute blatant lie as that conversation didn't happen. Our swim wear and towels had to be washed twice as we couldn't get rid of the smell. It was also mentioned to Adam that there is no lighting outside for when you get in and out of the tub. My friend slipped on the steps. There were two lights fitted but not working that I could seee. Surely there should be security lights for when people were outside. Anyway, one again the water was emptied and this time cleaned at the bottom before being refilled. A third visit was made to check on the levels. This all takes time so again we only got to use it a short time that night. We then came home the following morning. When we book these properties it's mostly because of the hot tub and not to be able to get the full use was disappointing. Moreso being called liars and blamed for the water was unfair. I feel if it wasn't for my friend knowing as much as she did and asking questions the outcome would've been different. It's a shame a bad taste has been left as this place really is gorgeous. I want to also mention a light bulb had been broken on the Friday which we offered to pay for on the Saturday but was told it was ok. The property was left clean and tidy on the Monday morning as we had found it.

  • "This pretty cottage is set in a remote location with stunning views of the surrounding countryside."

The welcome pack waiting for us after a six and a half hour journey through flooded roads was most gratefully received. The cottage is lovely and warm and cosy. The kitchen is a good size, but lacks some basic utensils; the oven makes a terrible noise and is not really big enough to cater for large numbers. The beds are really uncomfortable and there is very little bedroom furniture in which to store clothes. The shower cubicles are tiny. However, these issues in no way detracted from our stay which we all enjoyed.

Games room is really good. Cottage was really nice and very clean with plenty of room. Laura the host was amazing as the electrics tripped during the night so we had no hot water, but Laura visited straight away the next day and got it all back working. The hot tub was great on the first night, the electrics tripped it so it was not hot for the second day so could not use. However, on the morning of leaving it was back to the correct temperature so unfortunate that the electrics tripped.

The cottage is beautiful the surrounding and views are beautiful . Plenty of space we were a party of 8 adults and had plenty of space . A lovely welcome hamper on arrival also. Myself and another member of the group went on a lovely walk on the Saturday afternoon. The hot tub is amazing again with stunning views. Literally in the middle of no where. We met the owners who were lovely and totally accommodating. The cottage was clean and had everything we could ask for ( even the weather!!!) we came for a couple of family birthdays and enjoyed playing board games and splashing about in The jacuzzi which made for many a photo opportunity. If there was one criticism it would be the amount of wasps and flies, although within our group I was the only person that was stung. I know that this can't be helped and nothing at all to do with the property however we googled that peppermint oil repels them so would recommend that anyone visiting in the summer/hot months take some oil/spray and anti sting spray.

  • "WOULD NEVER EVER RECOMMEND THIS PROPERTY."

I’d strongly, strongly advise not to book this property. Unfortunately our stay overall was not great. We paid nearly £900 to stay for 2 nights and based on our experience, wouldn’t even have paid half of this amount. There were a couple of minor issues that we weren’t satisfied with for the price. For example, there were 2 and a half toilet rolls in the entire property for 9 girls staying for a long weekend. We were told that because it was self catered, we should have brought our own. I personally don’t believe self catered should mean you aren’t provided with toilet roll? Especially when you’re in the middle of nowhere. Secondly … the big issue we had… wasps There was a SEVERE wasp problem here. Someone was unable to stay in the end because she is severely allergic and can go into anaphylactic shock. I appreciate wasps outside are out of anyone’s control, but after complaining, one of the owners came to take a look and agreed with us that the wasps were so bad in and around close perimeters to the property and it shouldn’t be like this. He was even sometimes laughing at us running away from the wasps whilst we were trying to talk to him. They were so bad, one wasp flew straight down our friends throat and she had to make herself vomit, was in extreme pain, and 2 weeks later, she still has burst blood vessels in her eye. Another friend fell down a ledge and cut her leg because she was being pestered by them. We can’t stand, walk or sit in the same place for too long. The perimeter of the house and the inside should not be infested the way it is. The house is full of them, even when we made a conscious effort to keep windows and doors shut - they were still getting in. We’ve noticed you have wasp killer spray in which also tells us owners were perhaps aware of the problem. We also imagine they were aware of the problem because the property was being cleaned 2 hours prior to our arrival and we strongly believe that the owners would have encountered the wasps then. This isn’t the first time we’ve booked through Sykes cottages, it isn’t the first time we’ve stayed in a rural cottage before and we’ve never encountered an infestation like this before. We’re extremely disappointed that this wasn’t mentioned to us prior to arrival. Like I’ve already said, a friend couldn’t even stay in the end. We’re currently going through a complaints procedure. This has ruined the entire experience and unfortunately the owners have pretty much aired our messages since we returned home and are not prepared to take it further with us. They say it’s completely out of their control and seem to not care that our experience was ruined now that they have taken our money. Even though this is a freak situation, we believe this could have been handled better. I’m aware if anyone books this property, perhaps in autumn/winter they arent likely to have a wasp problem. However, I’d still book with caution because if you do end up with some sort of problem, from our experience, I’m not confident that the owners would be willing to rectify and help to make your experience better. In fact, they may even ignore your texts when you get home like us :)

  • "There were 8 of us that stayed at the house this year."

The kitchen, rooms and bedrooms were all of a suitable size to host this number and the kitchen in particular was well provisioned with cooking utensils and basic bits. The house is situated in large gardens with a woodland area around a more formal cottage garden. This garden could be superb if work was done to bring it back to its former life and after speaking to the owners, this is scheduled for later this year. Kids will love this part. The hot tub was great and has stunning views of the area and the constant red kites that flew ahead in the valley - a real treat. The garden furniture could be upgraded as parts are broken but perfectly fine to use. You are around a 20 minute drive from several walks of various degrees of difficulty - one on the national protected area which will take about an hour 30 and the other, around the dam which is about 3 hours long. Overall, fantastic house in a great location for nature and wildlife. Laura and Adam were also really helpful and responsive.

Clean and comfortable there is very little to improve on to be fair. Kitchen incredibly well stocked, even got some baking done with the kids! I'd be happy to recommend this cottage to anyone but would recommend that you bring all your food etc with you as it's a fair old drive to the nearest shop. Lovely welcome basket on arrival, including treats for the dog which was a lovely addition. Could do with some instructions for the hot tub, everything else has been set out well in the 'house manual'. Really was. I think the views should be advertised more because they’re amazing from the cottage. The automated light at the bottom of the stairs was quite annoying because it woke kids up each time we passed. As well as the very very creaky stairs and flooring. The coat hanger needs fixing or replacing. We ended up keeping our coats on the floor. Other than than the cottage is lovely, lots of room. The outside could have been tidier. There was advertisement of lots of garden area but really wasn’t suitable for children to run around. Lots of steps and concrete around. As lovely as it is, I wouldn’t take my small children there again. For adults it is absolutely ideal. We had a lovely time and hot tub was a bliss. Owners kept out of our way which we really liked. Overall we highly recommend it for adults.

The property is comfortable and tastefully furnished and the welcome basket was a lovely touch. Our only feedback would be, both double beds weren't that comfy, two of our party went to sleep in the twin beds mid stay and found them much better. The smart TV doesn't work so well (freeview works fine) there is an issue with the apps (e.g netflix, iplayer) and them not updating/not allowing you to actually navigate the menu.
