Fabulous location, enjoyed returning to the cottage after a day out exploring. There is not much around the cottage in terms of food, be sure to have food for your stay with you or eat before returning. My only negative comment would be that there is no back garden, you sit in the front yard wich is fine, but you do need comfy seating with an umbrella to be able to chill. Currently there is a wooden bench , and a wood bench with a table , both are so uncomftable. The yard is safe and enclosed for any dogs that are holidaying with you!

We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay in Glendower Cottage. I would like to point out that the outside wooden seating is of its type, but there are also numerous cushions in the property which could be used if required. We value constructive criticism and have added additional outside seating. Property Owner

  • "We stayed at Glendower over the Christmas holidays and the cottage was everything we hoped for."

Traditional, cosy, comfortable, warm and welcoming. There is a nice little pub within walking distance with friendly staff. But the icing on the cake has to be the location. Right behind the cottage is a lane that leads up into the hills with stunning walks through the woods, over the hill tops and along the river - I don't think we'd ever tire of those views. Our 2 cocker spaniels were in their element! Would be handy to have a hose pipe outside to clean the dogs down (but I'm being really picky here!) and there is a lovely large conservatory on entrance with a stone floor where it's easy enough to dry off after a long walk. Owners of the cottage are lovely. Nice little welcome pack on our arrival and they'd decked the place up for us with a little Christmas tree and fairy lights - very helpful and nothing is too much trouble. I actually left my makeup bag behind and they very kindly packaged it up for me and posted it off - thank you both! All in all, a wonderful relaxing place to stay and wouldn't hesitate to recommend (or visit again!).

  • "Lovely stay, Lovely surroundings."

Perfect for those wanting to get away from it all. No phone signal but free WiFi. Accommodation is a lovely characterful property with very friendly owners. Lots of features with comfortable furnishings which make it homely. Style is sympathetic to the age and history of the property. I saw in some other reviews feedback about cleanliness and a poor state of repair. For those wondering, the truth is that the building is an old characterful property with lots of tall ceilings so neither facet is going to be 100 percent perfect like a modern new build or designer boutique lodge on a park somewhere, but we found both aspects more than comfortable and surprisingly good considering some of the other reviews and the age of the property. There may be the odd area that could do with a small bit of maintenance attention or update at some point but we didn't find this a problem at all as it added to the character and charm. I'm normally fairly fussy particularly about bathrooms, but found this was clean and tidy snd suitablefor our needs. Space and equipment were great and I personally loved the mix of traditional flooring types. I'd say the showers may not be suitable for taller or larger/wider people as they are built into quaint bathroom areas in a cottage, but more than adequate for me at 5,6 and about 80kg. My in laws found them fine also. My husband who is quite tall preferred a bath anyway. We used the two doubles which were comfortable and clean but those staying as 3 couples or with older teenagers, may not find the mezzanine as private. Still a lovely area though and great for younger children I'd say, or those just staying for just a night or two. We were greeted with milk, chocolate and a lovely cake. Just a lovely touch. Owners were very helpful advising us how to access the property by phone the day before. All rooms were well heated and comfortable. Conservatory also, which is very pleasant on a warm day. Outside area is just an open driveway of sorts, which was fine for our two dogs not to dwell too long. Not particularly picturesque, but you have some lovely views so won't need it to be. Plenty of parking for multiple cars. Gates are secure for dogs. Although if you have a really big dog it may get over the wall. Ours is small lab sized and was fine. Gates are covered with chicken wire for smaller pets. There was only one small area that our smallest dog tried to get her head through which was under the gate itself. She is smaller than a chihuahua though! Several walks nearby through sheep fields or up into the hills but those with restricted mobility may want to consider flatter grounds elsewhere in Wales. Nearest town is about 20-25 mins away along some winding sheep filled roads. Perhaps not the location for those who aren't confident, particularly in the dark. For us it was fine after all, what do you expect you're in Wales!!! Sheep dodging is part of the fun. Lots of lakes to visit and some forests all about 30 mins away. Lots of walking routes and maps in the property also. Games, books and jigsaws all included. I always find reviews helpful in determining whether Accommodation will be suitable for the party I'm travelling with, so thought it was helpful to say who this may not suit as often I find that leads to a less than fair review which would be a shame in this case. We were a party of 2 couples, 2 generations, one in their late 30s and the other in their mid 60s. We also had 2 dogs, 1 medium/large and 1 tiny. For us, we loved it and found it more than suitable for our needs, particularly enjoying the character of the Accommodation. Overall a lovely stay at Glendower. We would recommend and return.

The cottage is as described and ideal for active holidays. If one of the 5 young people with me had written this review it would have been 5. If however you are like me and take holidays in cottages to enjoy living in them, it would have been pleasant to have a sunshade and comfortable seating for outside. I had recently broken my knee and movement was limited. The owners were extremely helpful prior to arrival and arranged a camp bed for us. Unfortunately I did not know to ask for garden chairs or shade at the time. The cottage is a wonderful base for exploration and there are caves around. Pre book the mountain bike experience or motor bike days, well worth it. I had 2 teenagers who thought they knew it all on mountain bikes, but I watched the video of the ride and organised a tutor - no A&E and worn out, contented young men.

  • "What a lovely stay in a beautiful cottage set in gorgeous surroundings!"

Upon our arrival late in the afternoon on a cold winter's day, we were greeted by a toasty warm cottage which looked so welcoming and snug in the lamplight. We immediately noticed sanitising equipment like hand gel, antibacterial wipes and spray, which were reassuring to see. The owners very kindly left us a delicious tea cake, milk and some chocolate, all of which were greatly appreciated. The cottage was clean and looked just like the photos in the advert. The downstairs area was open plan and spacious, which made it perfect for our gathering of four adults and one child as we could all still see each other and chit chat while the members of our group were doing different things like cooking, sitting at the dining table, or lounging on the very comfortable sofas which were brand new. The beds were comfortable and the bedlinen was crisp, fresh and smelled lovely. The kitchen had teabags, sugar and coffee sachets as well as most of the equipment and gadgets we needed for our stay (but we could have done with a rolling pin). The TV was a smart TV with viewing options like Netflix, Prime Video, etc. Having said the above, we have some suggestions which we hope will help the owners improve the experience for future guests even more: 1. Step: There is a step in the living area which takes you up from the level the sofas are on to where the TV stand is, as well as the door leading to the bedroom upstairs. This step is unmarked, and, although shallow, it can cause people to trip while heading towards the bedroom door, or lose their footing when coming down into the living area. It is visible in the photos on the cottage advert but if you arrive while it is dark (like we did), it can be hazardous. Very shortly after arriving at the cottage, our child lost his footing as he didn't see the step, fell down into the living area and just missed knocking his head against the coffee table. Luckily our child is only three years old because if he was older and therefore taller, his head would not have missed the table. One of the adults who arrived later the same evening and missed seeing our child fall over, also lost her footing and almost fell as she did not notice the step either. For health and safety reasons, it would be good to have some sort of marking along the edge of the step to mark the change in floor level. Maybe floor tape of a colour which is still sympathetic to the surrounding decor of the cottage might be an option as it wouldn't ruin the 'look' of the room but could still help prevent people from injuring themselves. Another option is LED strip lighting which is inexpensive and also looks great. It is worth saying that after we experienced these two incidents shortly after our arrival because of this unmarked step, we were all hyper aware of it and were very careful for the rest of the stay, so there were no more accidents. However, we were lucky that the first incidents were not more serious such as a sprained ankle or a knocked head on the stone floor or against the wooden coffee table as these could have negatively affected the rest of our getaway. 2. Chandelier bulbs: The bulbs in both chandeliers (over the living and dining areas) are a mixture of mostly cool white, one or two warm white and a couple of bulbs that aren't working at all. This is also the case with one of the wall lights behind the dining table which has one warm white and one cool white bulb. Unfortunately this really spoilt the look of the main room of the cottage once it got dark. The cottage is beautifully furnished in a rustic style and the warm white lights in all the other areas of the cottage perfectly complement the look that the owner was going for. Unfortunately the mismatched cool white lights and dead bulbs, looked careless and lacked the loving attention to detail which was so obvious everywhere else. Being the main lights in the largest part of the cottage, they looked harsh, clinical, and were hard to ignore, so we often resorted to keeping them off and walking around in the semi-darkness which was only lit by the surrounding warmer lights from the kitchen and freestanding lamps, and only turning on the overhead lights when we had no other choice such as at evening mealtimes so as to see our food. 3. Remote control: The TV remote control was very unresponsive for the entire duration of our stay and caused a fair bit of frustration for various members of our group when each of us took turns to try and navigate to something to watch on Netflix and Prime Video. It would be worth the owner checking whether it is simply a case of the remote needing new batteries, or, if indeed the remote itself needs to be replaced. 4. Ensuite toilet: The toilet in the ensuite connected to the double bedroom is not level and unfortunately the tilt is very noticeable and somewhat uncomfortable when sitting on it (it is higher on the left side and slopes downward to the right). This might be something the owners could consider rectifying if they plan to re-fit the ensuite in the future. The ensuite also seems a bit tired when compared to the rest of the cottage. The above suggestions are detailed but these are not intended to be critical; instead, the intention is to help the owners make their lovely place even more perfect (and safe, in the case of the first suggestion), especially since three of the four points are fairly quick and cheap fixes. Overall, I would recommend the cottage as it suited us well and we are glad that we chose to stay there.

Extremely well equipped and comfortable. I was a disappointed at the location, which wasn’t accurately available until we paid. The photo doesn’t show the row of houses behind the house, or the fact that it is on the corner of a busy road, so, there is constant traffic noise. The only bit of ‘garden’ is the tarmac out the front. Given that, and it is on the road, it wasn’t a nice place to sit. The dogs didn’t much like that either. Lovely cottage if you don’t want a garden, and don’t mind keeping the windows closed! It was extremely hot when we went and I was also very glad to have bought my own fans, though, the stone walls of the cottage did help keep things cooler.

About the location

LLANGYNOG

Bala 13.2 miles; Shrewsbury 32.4 miles

The pleasant village of Llangynog lies in breathtaking countryside amidst the beautiful Berwyn Mountains and surrounding wooded hills and valleys. The area has a history of lead, silver and slate mining dating back to the 17th Century but today it is a renowned location for climbing, birdwatching, walking and cycling, with famous mountain bike trails near Dolgellau, and a mountain bike centre at Llandegla. Llangynog boasts two pubs, both of which serve good food and are perfect to relax in after an exciting day out, plus on the outskirts of the village is a down hill mountain bike centre. There is also an off road motorbike experience, which is set on a 1500 acre site further up the valley which needs to be booked in advance. Enjoy Lake Bala, a wonderful beauty spot, with excellent fishing, a variety of water sports including white water rafting and a lakeside steam railway, or visit Lake Vyrnwy, which has an RSPB centre, bike hire and a sculpture park. Also within easy reach is Llanrhaeadr Waterfall, the tallest single drop waterfall in England and Wales. This is a beautiful part of the country and is perfect for touring the rest of North and Mid Wales and even Shropshire.
