  • "Excellent stay at Byrdir cottage."

Very clean, warm and comfortable and a lovely welcome cake. We enjoyed the far reaching views, with many Red Kites overhead and other garden birds visiting regularly. Please note check out time is now 9.30am, not 10.00am as advised by Sykes.

Although it was isolated there was plenty to keep us amused. Watching displays by the red kites in the nearby fields. The play room in the barn was a great success with its pool table, table tennis table and dart board. Also plenty of dvds and jigsaw puzzles. There was plenty of space for the 7 of us and 2 dogs who had plenty of outdoor space to wander in safety..

  • "Truly fabulous cottage in Beautiful surroundings."

Very peaceful with a lovely atmosphere. The kitchen is well stocked with herbs and condiments plus a very nice welcome pack. There was plenty of room for 7 adults and our 2 dogs. The gardens are immaculate and the games room is perfect for keeping people occupied. There is an excellent petrol station 20 minutes walk away which sells everything you need, including a Greggs cafe ! The village of Rhayader is only a 10 minute drive away and has lots of shops, cafes and pubs. Spriggs Taxi’s are very reliable and drove us around when we didn’t want to take the car. We highly recommend the food in The Castle. Not as posh as the other 2 pubs but friendlier and better priced. Elan valley is only a 10 minute drive away and should not be missed, it is stunningly beautiful. Car is essential if people are not good walkers or have mobility problems as the drive up to the house is long and steep, but is perfect for long walks and wildlife spotting. We highly recommend Byrdir and will definitely come again.

The location is outstandingly beautiful. This cottage is surrounded by beautiful hills and mountains which feel like a huge warm embrace. Just standing at the kitchen sink is a great pleasure as you can stare at the most uplifting view. Every window looks out on open countryside with red kites flying around all day. The water is fresh from the mountain spring. The cottage itself has everything you could possibly need and more. It is so thoughtfully equipped. There were even spices in the kitchen! The beds are comfortable and you get an amazing nights sleep in the quiet darkness. Star gazing is a must here. The games room is a great bonus too. You can enjoy a holiday here anytime. The photos do not do it justice. The games room was a fantastic addition and lots of fun. The owners were so helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The one downfall were the beds which I think need replacing as they are not very comfortable and higher in the centre than the edge. But other than that we would highly recommend a stay here, we had some issue locating it in the dark though, so would recommend using the what three words app and putting in relating.inefficient.tunes

Excellently located for long or short walks. When the weather doesn't permit a venture outdoors; the excellent games room with the open fire ticks all the boxes. The living room is a great size and heats up quickly when the log fire is roaring. The entire property was clean and tidy. The kitchen and utility room are well equipped with all the necessities and more. Upon arrival it was heartening to find plenty of towels available and blankets, the latter used when sitting outside looking at the countless stars. The beds were comfortable, and we enjoyed a good night's sleep every night as it is so quiet only awoken by the chorus of songbirds in the morning. We highly recommend this property for families large or small and we will definitely be returning soon for another stay.

The games room is totally amazing and a great place to spend evenings with the family. well appointed and thoughtfully furnished and decorated, the owners have done a lovely job of providing everything you need for a great and reaxing holiday. Following the coronavirus pandemic we really needed a break and this provided our "bubble" a great opportunity to recover some emblance of normality. the setting was beautiful and the weather perfect - i understand that this is normal for Wales! In short, other than in an ideal world, having an extra bathroom, a larger fridge freezer in the pantry and perhaps a banister on the 3 steps on the landing (took a bit of a tumble in the dark - my fault!) the property really was perfect. The games barn was a particular hit in the evening too. Loved it and I am sure you will too.

  • "This is a nice holiday cottage with plenty of room and lots of garden for the dogs to play."

The games room is great for children and adults, we spent a lot of time in the games room. The surrounding fields were free of livestock so we were able to walk in them with the dogs off the lead and perfectly safely. The only issue was the wifi, we read in the cottage instructions that there is a 50g limit for the month, divided into weekly allowances. 13g of internet access is nowhere near enough for a winter holiday with 5 adults and 2 children all with their own iPads and watching online content. We did exceed the allowance, the owner did pay for more gigabytes of data and we were not asked to pay for the extra gigabytes, however, it did make us a little uncomfortable having to ask the owner to pay for more data and the worry that the 20g the owner purchased would not get used up again. It would have been better to give us the option of buying extra data at a fixed price so that everyone knows where they stand and we would not have felt guilty watching Netflix. I could not find any mention of data restrictions in the brochure or on Sykes Cottages website. The data problem has not put us off the cottage though, it was a lovely holiday and we thoroughly enjoyed the week. The cottage had been thoughtfully decorated with Christmas decorations and a lovely tree, and there was cake, milk, coffee and tea waiting for us upon arrival. We would definitely go back!

It made for a really enjoyable xmas week for our family of 6 adults and 2 children. Spacious, clean, lovely views and the games room was a massive hit for all. I would however point out that the enclosed garden is currently missing a gate so nothing to prevent dog running away down the lane. Also, and this is not a new thing. Sykes should make it clear on info when booking that dogs are not allowed upstairs at the property. This has now happened to us on 2 occasions that only on arrival have we discovered that dogs must be kept downstairs. I would not have booked these properties had we known prior to arrival as it mean't one of us had to sleep downstairs with him as he is not used to being left downstairs on his own.

The fact you can walk around the surrounding fields is a great bonus. The cottage is comfy, clean, and well equipped, with the best games room facility we've ever had at a holiday rental property, a welcome bonus if put off from the great outdoors by the weather. The owners are close at hand if needed and left a good variety of local information and guides to look through. If you need facilities on the doorstep it's possibly not for you. However, the nearest shop, (and Greggs!), is only a short drive on the main A470 away.
