The market town of Laurencekirk was originally known by the name of Conveth and this is believed to relate to an obligation to offer free food and lodging to passing troops. It sits in the area known as The Howe o’ the Mearns – meaning the wide valley of the Mearns (the former county between Aberdeenshire and Angus). It has a wide range of amenities from supermarkets and butchers to pubs, bakers and a Post Office. There is much to attract the tourist to the area, including Arbuthnott House with its walled garden, superb walking in Denlethen Wood or on the forest trails of Drumtochty. The nearby Edzell golf club caters for all abilities with its challenging 18 hole woodland course as well as a 9 hole course and a driving range. No visit to the area would be complete without sampling the water of life at nearby Fettercairn Distillery or a visit to the centre commemorating noted writer Lewis Grassic Gibbon, who set many of his books in this area.
