The owner is very friendly and welcoming. We were extremely happy with our holiday, less so with Sykes Cottages however who were very difficult to get hold of by phone when we had a query before we went on holiday. It took all afternoon to get through & then when we got hold of someone we were put through to someone else, who also took a long time to reply!

  • "Perfect accommodation."

My husband and I joked amongst ourselves that the only thing we could find wrong with the place was that there wasn't a garlic crusher in the otherwise incredibly well-equipped kitchen (but don't worry, as there were plenty of knives and chopping boards, I survived this ordeal unscathed!). Oh no actually, the other thing was that the ceiling lights in the dining room were a bit glary and could do with lampshades. But other than those two incredibly trivial matters, the place was perfect. And the joy of being hit with the fragrance of the honeysuckle in the garden every day was just wonderful. Would definitely stay here again if we are back in this area. Thank you!

Easy on-site parking, 5 min walk across aqueduct to cafe and 5 min further into Chirk itself. Good base for exploring Oswestry, Llangollen, Chirk Castle and surrounding area with a variety of local walks or more challenging climbs into the Berwyns. Would be more than happy to stay here again. Oh, and the owner makes a mean lemon cake.

  • "A very comfortable cottage in a great location very very close to chirk aqueduct and on the canalside."

The garden acted like an extension to the house with its decking area in the morning sun. We had no problem with parking for two cars in the private drive. Our host left us wine, biscuits and milk so as we'd been shopping we were able to settle in immediately. We were also given a home baked cake! The cottage has plenty of space for a family to spread out and you can walk along the canal or into chirk in a few minutes. Chirk Castle is a longer walk. All in all a lovely cottage in a very interesting location, particularly if you're interested in the history of canals. Definitely recommended.

Several pubs are within walking distance as are a few restaurants across the aqueduct in Chirk itself. Previous comments about space in the shower and bedrooms may hold true but this is, after all, a holiday cottage not one's own home where it may have taken years of adaptation to one's own requirements. All in all, a peaceful and enjoyable stay made possible by our delightful host, Susan (and her legendary lemon drizzle cake!).

  • "Perfect week at a beautifully situated holiday cottage."

The owner Susan contacted us in the week before our holiday to ask about our arrival time and to check whether there was anything we might need that is currently stored away from the cottage to help with covid related cleaning (eg hairdryers). Susan was cheerful and friendly and I felt welcome before we’d even arrived. During this conversation I happened to mention that I struggle with the cold. When we arrived, we found that Susan had arrived early to get the heating running and reset the timer so it would run continuously and I could easily switch it off by turning the thermostat down when we went out. I can safely say that I was wonderfully warm for the duration of our stay (last week in January). The cottage was clean, cosy, warm and spacious. The the kitchen was very well equipped - we tend to cook from scratch most evenings and we weren’t short of anything. On arrival there was a much appreciated welcome pack of tea, coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits, Pringles and wine. During the middle of the week Susan arrived with a homemade lemon drizzle cake which was delicious. It has to be said that Susan was an excellent host, welcoming and friendly and definitely wanted us to enjoy our stay. The location of the cottage was another highlight, situated right next to the canal, within very short distance of the Chirk aqueduct (built by Telford) and the viaduct which runs alongside it. We had a wonderful week here and would most definitely return.

Moreover, it was clear that Sykes were not prepared to help or compromise in any way, refusing to refund any money or change the dates. The property

This wonderful semi-detached cottage is located right on the canal towpath, just a hundred yards from the Chirk Aqueduct running high above the River Ceiriog, which forms the border between England and Wales.

Dating from 1847, this former Victorian wharf man’s cottage seamlessly blends character features alongside modern fixtures and fittings to provide a holiday home of real distinction.

Head up the stairs to find three comfy bedrooms, two of which look over the canal, where you will also find a family bathroom.

On the ground floor, the cosy sitting room boasts a roaring open fire, whilst to the rear of the cottage is a modern and well-equipped kitchen next to a dining room, as well as a shower room.

Step out of the back door and you will find a beautiful lawned garden with both a patio and a decked area, where you can sit and relax as the canal boats chug quietly past.

Stroll out of the front door and you immediately become a member of the canal boat community.

Turn right and within a minute’s walk, you find yourself on the Thomas Telford designed Chirk Aqueduct which takes you 70 feet above the Ceiriog Valley into North Wales.

Turn left along the towpath and down the road and you will soon reach the Bridge Inn where a warm welcome awaits.

The small town of Chirk has a delightful selection of shops, cafes and pubs, as well as being home to Chirk Castle, a magnificent National Trust owned medieval castle which not only features many fascinating historical artefacts, but also boasts fabulous gardens and woodland.

Situated on the Welsh border, guests at Aqueduct Cottage can easily access the North Wales towns of Llangollen and Bala, as well as being just a short drive from the Roman city of Chester, famous for its racecourse, Roman Walls and the world-famous Chester Zoo.

A superb base for a holiday that you will never forget.

CHIRK

Llangollen 5 miles.

The small border town of Chirk (Welsh spelling: Y Waun) stands on the escarpment above where the rivers Ceiriog and Dee meet, and is referred to as The Gateway to Wales. Most famous for its magnificent 14th century castle and gardens, one of many built throughout Wales by Edward I, Chirk boasts a wonderful aqueduct, designed by Thomas Telford, a selection of pleasant pubs and restaurants, convenience stores, chemist, gift shop, coffee shops, local butcher's, greengrocers, bakery, an excellent golf course and marina. The surrounding area, notably the beautiful Ceiriog Valley described by Lloyd George as “a little bit of heaven on Earth”, provides wonderful walks and cycling, including the famous Offa's Dyke Pathway, and local trout fishing. Only five miles from charming Llangollen, with its stream railway, watersports, famous Eisteddfod, Castell Dinas Bran, Valle Crucis Abbey and scenic Horseshoe Pass. Also five miles is the market town of Oswestry with its iron age hillfort, and within easy reach is the Roman walled city of Chester with its famous zoo and the medieval town of Shrewsbury, both only half an hour by train or car from Chirk.
