  • "Had a wonderful family stay."

Facilities excellent. Kitchen has everything you need, bedrooms great and bathrooms good. Only a couple of gripes... lounge sofas are far from the best and I would suggest these need replacing. Top ensuite shower is not the most powerful, just a light shower however, all other bathrooms and ensuite perfect. Gripes aside..... Holiday home owners left a lovely welcome gift and responded to our queries regarding recycling quickly. Try the bakery in town... gorgeous bakes!! Criccieth is an excellent central.point for touring the surrounding areas. All in all a great house, just in need of replacement sofas to ensure comfort. Overall an amazing family holiday home and would recommend to others.

Hello, thank you for your feedback. I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay in Criccieth A new sofa has been ordered for the living room and we are awaiting delivery, apologies it did not arrive in time for your stay. • "Beautiful house with original features and stunning views."

Pengolwg was a lovely holiday home in a great location. The photos don’t do the views from the house justice - amazing outlook onto the castle and the whole of the bay. Coast path walks virtually from the door in both directions. House was perfect for us as a group of 4 couples - we had a bathroom each! The beds were very comfortable and the house was cozy particularly with the Aga and the effective central heating. We easily fit 4 cars on the drive. Criccieth was an ideal base from which to explore the area. Oh, and we were very lucky with the weather! There are areas of the house that could do with some updating (e.g. some of the curtains) but they didn’t spoil our enjoyment of the house and the owner was friendly and very responsive when the battery in a smoke detector needed replacing. Definitely highly recommend.

The views were excellent. The house is very spacious and comfortable and we had a great stay and would be more than happy to return. A previous review had raised concerns and there were a few niggles eg one of the toilets not flushing properly but none of them detracted from our enjoyment and could easily be sorted.

  • "The photos make this property look wonderful - but unfortunately the experience didn't match up to this."

Positives - Location (5 minutes to the beach) - Good sized house and rooms, with high ceilings - Comfy and clean beds - Plentiful bathrooms - Clear recycling instructions. Areas that need addressing - The house is generally faded, feels and smells grubby and as a result doesn't make for a relaxing stay. - The ground floor smells very foisty/musty and we suspect there is damp rising from the locked cellar. This smell permeates to the 1st floor meaning that we needed to have the bedroom doors shut to keep it out. - The hall way during our visit had a different awful wet rotting smell emanating from the outside/garden items cupboard. This smell was so bad that we had to be sure to keep the inner door shut to keep it contained to the hall. - The back door to the house which is the main one for accessing the car parking and going in/out constantly blows open unless you keep it locked. - There is a general grubbiness to the place - chipped paint work throughout, stained and/or peeling walls and ceilings in many places. Rooms have been cleaned, but not fully clean e.g. dust, or with the slate runners on the table - clearly not lifted for a long time! - Sagging and faded furniture (I see one response from the owner to another reviewer suggests that the cushions just need plumping but several sofas are beyond that. Unless you want to spend an evening constantly plumping them up!) - Broken arm on leather sofa (broken where people must have lent so much). - Carpets throughout generally clean but a bit stained in places. - Top room ensuite not fully cleaned and bin was full on our arrival. - The outside bin was full when we arrived so we had to wait till day 6 for that to be emptied. Even if this is a consequence of previous guests there needs to be a way that your cleaning team rectify this for new guests. - Washing machine - tripping hazards of stuff to get to this. - Huge dandelion weeds as the only flower in the pot by the door. - No information file on the house (yet other reviewers have repeatedly said this). - First aid kit only found 2 days after we needed it. In the back of a cupboard. - Wooden gate down steps does not fit into the lock without being lifted, hence one of our party cut themselves trying to shut the gate (which was necessary as we had a dog with us). - Presumably loose stained glass in internal front door - with bubble wrap protecting it on either side. - General feeling of damp/foistiness. Felt like the smell clung to us when going out. Such a shame but the house needs much work to get it up to standard worthy of the price charged. I see that since we booked it (reviews seemed OK then) - many of the last 6 months reviews have raised issues and these just don't seem to have been dealt with. We'd return to Criccieth, but not to this house. It was very disappointing.

  • "We enjoyed our week in Pengolwg which is a spacious house with wonderful views."

There were one or two issues which I have already raised with Menai/Sykes, mainly concerning food recycling and external door locks. Just a little more TLC needed overall to do justice to such a beautiful old house. This did not however detract too much from the holiday as a whole, and the property suited our party of six so well that I have re-booked for next year, with fingers crossed that issues will be resolved by then!!! The provision of beach towels is a real bonus as are the information sheets around the house, although we didn't find one with local contact numbers for the usual caretaker, doctor, dentist etc, which could prove useful. The 'welcome pack' was also very thoughtful.

Very well equipped for a large group, with plenty of bed and bathrooms, good outdoor space and barbecue. We had a great week. Just one minor grumble in that there were a number of things needing repair. The frame of one of the twin beds was broken, as was the rotary clothes dryer and also the gate, which meant that the garden was not secure for the dogs or children. However, this did not detract from an enjoyable stay.

  • "The house is lovely and has lots of space."

Definitely in an ideal location as so easy to get to the beach and lovely place to walk around. We had a few slight issues which dampened it from being perfect. When we arrived there was a bundle of towels that looked like they needed to be washed on the landing and a big bag of bedding at the other end in the middle of the upstairs landing ( someone came and picked these up a few days into the holiday). There was also mouldy food and liquid left in the food waste bin inside which smelt horrible and made us gag. In one of the bathrooms there was tooth paste and wrappers left on one of the bathroom sinks. The gate down to the high street we couldn't get to open and some of the doors were difficult to open or close but that it could be they are just old. It is a lovely property and a great area. It's a shame those few bits let it down for us as not really ideal having to clean up when you arrive. It was difficult to find instructions on how to use stuff in the house but we were able to figure stuff out. Beautiful hose shame about the cleanliness at the start.

There were some essential items missing from the kitchen, as discussed with Sykes and Menai Holidays. It is a lovely house but could do with some TLC with the decoration and some of the furniture. The beds and linens were comfortable and clean. Think a bigger or second fridge (for 10 people) would work better and a dryer would add to the overall facilities.

Pengolwg is perfect, with beautiful sea views across to Harlech and beyond. There is so much space in the house, with everything provided that you could possibly need, and the beds are beyond comfy. The house is fantastically situated in Criccieth, just a short walk to the beach, castle and shops. The village has a lovely bakery, butcher, deli, cafes, a great fish and chip shop, and of course Cadwalader's ice cream parlour. Another highlight was the Dylan's restaurant in the renovated Clough Williams-Ellis-designed pavilion. We had a brilliant week and can't wait to return.

The house is uber comfortable with masses of space for everyone to spread out and do their own thing. The garden was a joy to be in. Views from the house and garden are second to none! • "This property has been awarded 4 ticks on the listing and the photographs make it look exceptional."

Indeed it is a fantastic house in a wonderful position however as previous guests have noted there are loads of things which let it down. It seems petty to list them but the cream sofa in the lounge is so old and saggy it’s really a disgrace. The bath tap on the top floor bath is tied up with string and wood to prevent it being used. (Presumably this a solution to it dripping which has been mentioned in a previous review). Lots of the crockery is chipped and cracked. Twice while we were making hot drinks a mug leaked as the boiling water hit. The recycling was in a very unhygienic state. We tidied it up ourselves. The access to the washing machine was blocked with boxes and cleaning equipment. I had a little go at tidying it up so as not to fall. The nappy bin in the downstairs bathroom had not been emptied and smelt. It’s not really what we hoped for from the description.

Thanks you for your feedback and apologies for the inconveniences. The cream sofa cushions are feather fill and does need pumping up as this is a characteristic of feather down filled cushions , I have checked the sofa but is does not sag, and it is in good condition, I have purchased foam cushions for those guest that find feather down cushions uncomfortable. A note should have been left explaining that we are aware that the tap in top floor bathroom bath was dripping, but that it was in full working order, we had been waiting for a replacement part, and twice the incorrect part arrived. This is now fix. Thanks for pointing out the chipped crockery, this has been replaced. We will ensure that we leave a note out for guests asking if they come across any chipped crockery, that the items are left out for the cleaner to remove. As we don't ask for a deposit for breakages, the cleaner does not check the crockery on a weekly basis, and if chipped crockery are placed back in the cupboards the cleaning team will miss finding them. Apologies that the recycling was in an unhygienic state. The recycling blue boxes and food bin are collected by Gwynedd council on a weekly basis on a Friday morning, as our guest arrive on a Saturday the recycling bins should be empty. In the utility room the access to the washing machine should not be blocked, and there should not be any boxes left there, the cleaning team will ensure moving forward that all the cleaning equipment will be left at the back of the room. We leave a nappy bin out for the benefit of our guest with babies, as it should be a hygienic disposal option, it should have been emptied, it looks like it was on oversight and the cleaning team apologies Property Owner

  • "As other reviewers have said, this is a wonderful property, spacious and with a great location and facilities for a large family party – almost like having a hotel to yourself."

Having beach towels provided was an added bonus too. However, as has been indicated in previous reviews, it is in need of some TLC. A significant amount of crockery is chipped; on arrival the cafetiere was dirty (unwashed, containing tea bags!); aside from manuals and instructions there was no information about the property and locality per se, including about bin collections for example (from our previous bookings with Sykes this lack of local information is pretty much unheard of). Some of the feedback given by previous reviewers (such as the problem with the toaster) appeared not to have been acted upon. Finally, despite searching we were unable to find replacement dustbin liners or biodegradable bags for the food waste Judging by the condition of the outside feed waste container, we were not the first to have this problem. But, despite these points, which we hope are helpful and anticipate could be easily rectified, we had a great stay with Sykes once again!

Thank you for your feedback, Apologies for the chipped crockery, this has been replaced, and we will leave a note for future guest to suggest that any chipped crockery to be left out so that we can replace it. The cafetiere should have been washed, and our cleaning team apologies for the oversight. There should be an information pack left in the dinning room, with details on doctors, local hospital, contact numbers, local restaurants, taxi's, and tourist attraction, and also a pack on all the appliances etc. This will be replaced as it appears to have gone missing. There should also be a laminated sheet in the kitchen with details on the recycling and bin collection. Extra Bin Liners should have been left under the sink in the kitchen, moving forward the cleaning team will check to ensure they are there. A new toaster has been purchased Property Owner

Only minor points but wardrobe in one of the rooms was cracked on the inside. A toilet in one of the bedrooms, first floor, didn't flush properly but one of our friends fixed it. Bathroom on the second floor, tap leaking in bath. Apparently it's been like that for a while. Seen on other review. Apart from this, we all loved the house and would definitely stay there again. Recommended and close to local shops.

Thanks for your feedback, and pointing out the crack in the wardrobe on the base. The dripping tap on the bath has been fixed, we were waiting for a spare part, and were sent the incorrect one, and had to re-order hence the delay in getting it fixed. Our plumber has been in to see the toilet and is ordering a replacement, again thanks for pointing out. Property Owner

We were a party of three generations, 7 adults, two 3 year olds and a baby. There was plenty of space for everyone, and having so many bathrooms made a big difference (the bath in the top bathroom was still out of use but wasn't a problem). Because it's such a solidly built house we had no problems with noise transmission - especially good in the early mornings for those of us without children on the top floor! The house is a little worn but this made it feel more homely and less precious. We enjoyed the garden when it wasn't blowing a gale and pouring! The kitchen was well stocked though a few of the dishes and pans were either cracked or old and weren't needed anyway. Only a few suggestions that would have improved our stay, a shoe rack in the hall, oven gloves, and a tumble drier (the electric heated rack wasn't very efficient and we couldn't always dry clothes outside). We agree with previous comments about providing an appliances/visitor information folder. The weather let us down on several days but we love Criccieth (it was our second visit but first with the family) and there is plenty to do in the area. Our favourite café is the the Tyn e Mor. Being so close to the beach and the town is a real plus. We would definitely recommend and hopefully will return.

Thank you for your feedback. I have asked the cleaner to check the crockery, and old pans will be replaced. Oven gloves should be left out for guests on the aga and I will purchase a shoe rack, a great suggestion. A visitor information pack should be located in the dinning room. We will ensure it is left on the kitchen table, with the welcome pack. Property Owner

The bath tap on the second floor doesn’t work properly, both toilets on the first floor front bedrooms take a long time to refill and the left hand side buttons on the toaster won’t stay down, information regarding refuse collection would enable guests to put out the bins on required days these are not complaints though just repair information. There were ten of us staying and it certainly wasn’t overcrowded. Fabulous house for large groups or families with the added advantage of being well within walking distance of local pubs and restaurants. Would highly recommend.

Thanks for your feedback, The bath tap has been fixed. And our plumber has ordered a replacements for the two en-suite toilets on the first floor. The views of Criccieth were stunning and the location of the property was ideal for the beach and walking into town. Our only gripe was the welcome pack which only consisted of a number of brochures for eating out and activities etc. On numerous previous holidays of this type we have always had the benefit of a pack, usually written by the owners, highlighting their recommendations on where to shop, eating out, excursions and most importantly phone numbers for local GP practices, dentists and nearest hospitals etc in case of emergency. There were notes dotted around the house with various instructions for food waste etc but it would have been preferable to have all these in one location.

We found the garden secure for the four legged companion, yes it's a busy road and the traffic can be a bit noisy, but this didn't impact on our night time sleeping and we didn't spend too much time in the garden as we were too busy investigating the beautiful Llyn Peninsula. A house so full of character and part of such cherished Welsh history we all felt privileged to have stayed there. History apart this is a beautiful house in its own right , sympathetically updated , its bright , airy and modern with big comfortable rooms having everything you could possibly need , the kitchen is fully equipped with electric ceramic hob/electric oven (but not fan) and a bright red gas Aga !! huge selection of glasses/plates etc with v.good quality pans/frying pans (not cheap & nasty ones) a bay fronted window with a round table & 4 chairs proved popular for breakfasts , this opened on to a Dining Room with a bay fronted window overlooking Criccieth Bay and the castle ..... sublime !! across the hallway is the large and comfortable Lounge with another bay fronted window overlooking Criccieth Bay and the castle. the first floor comprises 3 large bedrooms , the front two of which (both en-suite) have fantastic vista's over the Bay , the two second floor bedrooms also have that view !!! The property

This is a fantastic holiday house with a definite wow factor.

Once home of the Prime Minister David Lloyd George, Pengolwg means "lookout point".

It was from this spot that the women of Criccieth would stand to look out for their loved ones returning from sea on the tall ships.

Walking through the front door you are greeted with a large restored wooden staircase, and ceilings reaching all the way to the top of the first floor with doors darting off in every direction.

The spacious sitting room has luxurious soft carpets and a log burning stove, making it a warm and cosy room to relax in after a day of exploring.

There is a Smart TV and a DVD player.

If you want complete solitude from the rest of the group, there is a wonderful reading corner with stunning views over to Criccieth castle and the sea. There is a very well equipped, contemporary kitchen with the luxury of a bright red AGA, as well as a double electric oven and 5-ring hob, fridge freezer, wine fridge, dishwasher, Nespresso coffee machine and of course a Popty Ping (Popty = oven, ping = ping, meaning Microwave).

The kitchen also has a DVD player.

There is a utility room with a washing machine. The dining room has the most stunning views across to Criccieth castle and all the way to Harlech following the coastline down Wales.

There is a large dining table and chairs at one end of the room, with a small sofa and log burner for a quiet corner whilst the rest of the party are in the sitting room. There is a large bathroom behind the kitchen, so as the kids bathe you can start to get the supper underway. There are five bedrooms.

On the first floor you will find a twin room with zip and link beds and very comfy mattresses.

Please request how you would like the beds to be made up when booking.

There is also a double bedroom with views like no other, looking out for miles and miles over the Welsh coastline.

The room has the luxury of an en-suite shower, loo and basin.

The third room has a king size bed, with similarly stunning views and the added bonus of an en-suite shower, loo and basin. Nestled at the back of the house is a secret staircase up to another hidden section of the house on the second floor, with a stunning family en-suite room, with a double and a single bed, twinned with views across all of the Llŷn's coastline as well as Harlech and Criccieth castle.

Across the landing, there is a double room, with equally amazing views. On the first floor, there is also a shower room, with a large power shower.

The second floor has a free-standing bath. It is just an easy walk to Criccieth town centre which is laden with pubs, shops, restaurants and cafes, on your way to or from the beach.

Criccieth is an excellent central hub for exploring the Llŷn Peninsula, as well as having Snowdonia right behind you.

This house is perfect to relax in after a day of adventure, or equally luxurious to spend the days in reading a book in front of the fire and playing board games. The beds will be made made up as advertised, if you would like a different bed configuration please contact Menai Holidays 7 days before your arrival.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £200.
