  • "We have just spent a week at School House Cottage."

It is the perfect location to explore North Yorkshire and we were so lucky with the weather too - wall to wall sunshine. The cottage is lovely and beautifully furnished and the owner Liz left a really thoughtful welcome package for us when we arrived - milk, butter, freshly baked bread, jam etc. She welcomed us personally and also popped round to wish us a safe journey home. The bed was so comfortable that even during the hot weather we got a great night's sleep. Special mention must also go to the beautiful garden to the rear of the property. It was a real oasis in the evenings with lots of shady corners to sit in. Coxwold is a very pretty, well kept village. Liz's tearoom and B&B is adjacent to the cottage and there is a pub with great food in the village (2 minutes walk). I'd definitely recommend the cottage and we will definitely return.

Thankyou so much for your lovely feedback. So pleased you enjoyed your stay and look forward to welcoming you back at a future date! Property Owner

  • "On first entering the property it smelt of damp in the living room."

Once we had had the wood burner on for 2 nights it wasn't too bad. There is a damp patch in the bedroom also. Quite noisy from the tea rooms next door. The adjoining door upstairs into the house next door with the flimsy catch on it was rather wierd !! No hoover No bathrobes Very very comfy bed though Be prepared if staying in the colder nights all the heating is controlled from next door and the wood burner, although lovely, is expensive to have on, roughly £10 a night. All the windows downstairs are painted shut

Hi, thank you for your feedback. To answer your complaints, as explained, we had a leak in the roof which lead to a damp patch in the bedroom wall. This was fixed some time ago but needs time to dry out. It is hardly noticeable. No one has ever complained about noise from the tearoom. In fact, most feel it is a clear benefit as there is a beautiful old English garden to sit in and enjoy with freshly baked scones , jam and clotted cream. The catch on the door is there purely so that no one from the B&B side can enter the cottage. We do not leave a hoover as we are happy to completely clean the cottage on guests' departure. Unfortunately, as the building is very old and therefore very interesting and quirky, the heating system can only be controlled from one place. The heating is kept on all mornings and evenings. You can of course turn radiators down if need be. But we prefer all guests to be toasty warm. Of course log burners are more expensive to run, nowadays. This is why we always leave enough fuel for your first 2 nights. The windows are NOT all painted shut . There are only 2 downstairs and one of them opens wide. As I am nearly always in the tearoom next door, it seems a pity you did not try to speak to me so that I could rectify any problems. If you were unhappy. It is pointless to complain afterwards. The location was perfect due to wanting to visit York, Harrogate and Whitby. The welcome pack included; eggs, butter, milk, orange juice and toiletries. The cottage was perfect for the 2 of us. We particularly enjoyed the use of the log burner. Our stay in Coxswold exceeded our expectations. The owner (next door) was very friendly. We would definitely recommend a visit here and would certainly return.

  • "Really enjoyed aour stay in the School House."

Cosy, clean with a fabulously big stove fireplace and a lovely comfy king size bed in a spacious bedroom. There's a nice garden area at the back, but alas the wet weather in February denied us the opportunities of enjoying it. The location is excellent in the pretty village of Coxwold, with a really welcoming pub just a few minutes walk down the road that serves good food and ale. As a base for exploring North Yorkshire, the national park, and all the many nearby sights, villages, abbeys, towns etc it's outstanding. Liz the owner was very hospitable and helpful as well. A therapeutic, peaceful experience for us both; wished we could've stayed longer...

  • "We enjoyed our holiday at School House Cottage very much and Liz was a great host."

Her cream teas in the pretty garden are fabulous, and a nice welcome holiday starter supply of essentials was provided. School House Cottage was warm and comfortable during our stay, with loads of hot water always available. The “shared garden” at the cottage is shared with patrons of the tea room as well as B&B guests next door. Broadband is on the slow side, but this could easily be seen as a plus point ! It might be good for Sykes to update the details in their description, as the shop in the village closed some time ago. Coxwold itself is a lovely village and the whole area is very beautiful with plenty of choice of things to do. The local “Fauconberg Arms” we found to be a great place for a meal, only a short walk from the cottage.

  • "Liz was a brilliant host and we had a fantastic time back in our native Yorkshire."

The cottage is to an high standard and was found spotless. The bread, milk ,butter, cerals etc was a lovely touch and very much appreciated. We are just sorry that we will not be able to return due to Liz deciding to ban dogs. It is a shame that irresponsible dog owner leaving their pets locked in the house has led to this decision. We would have definately have returned if the property was still pet friendly. Thank you for a lovely week. Rob, Sally and Harvey the dog.

She kindly left some provisions for us upon our arrival, which was very welcome. We had a lovely peaceful stay, Would definately recommend, Not really suitable if there are disability issues. The stairs would be a problem, as the kitchen is upstairs and lounge downstairs. But that would not deter us from going again.

The cottage is superb, a lovely welcome hamper of milk, eggs, jams, butter, fresh orange juice and fresh bread. Highly recommend the tea rooms attached to the cottage which is also run by Liz the owner. Two minute walk to the village 'local', The Fauconberg where we sat outside most days after our walks, they also do excellent food.

  • "We spent a most enjoyable holiday in a delightful cottage."

The cottage was well equipped for 2 people and extremely comfortable. The village was quiet, but in a good location for visiting attractions around the area, and had the benefit of a village pub with a restaurant. After a recent experience where the parking at the accommodation was not accurately described (and has not been amended after feedback) we were naturally concerned, but needed to have had no qualms about this property.

The cottage more than met our expectations and was clean, comfortable and had everything we could wish for. We enjoyed sitting out in the garden in the evenings with a coffee listening to the birds singing away. Coxwold is a great place to start walks into the beautiful North York Moors and the Howardian Hills and is within easy reach of both Riveaulx and Byland Abbeys.

  • "The cottage itself is beautifully decorated, warm and comfortable, with a charming garden, and the surrounding area is glorious - full of wonderful scenery and interesting things to do."

We would recommend visits to Helmsley, which is everything a country town should be; Rievaulx Abbey; the National Bird of Prey Centre; Ryedale Folk Museum; Kilburn White Horse and the walk along the top above it, which takes you past the Yorkshire Gliding Club; the Mousy Thompson showroom in Kilburn; Beadlam Farm shop for provisions. Coxwold itself is delightful, and an added bonus is that the owner of the cottage runs a tea room and high-end homeware shop right next door.

  • "The cottage is situated in a pretty village within easy access of the North York Moors."

Due to the current covid restrictions during our stay we elected to arrange for two evening meals to be delivered to us by local chef Mark Westaby. These proved to be of outstanding quality and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to future visitors. We would also recommend The White Horse Fish and Chip shop in Thirsk for quick take away meals. The cottage overall is well appointed, however there was no means of controlling the heat which we understand was controlled centrally so couldn't be adjusted accordingly. The woodburner in the sittingroom took a long time warm up and therefore the room felt cold in the evenings as our stay was mid October. The cottage was well furnished and the bed in particular was extremely comfortable and most welcome after long walks over the Moors.

  • "We had an enjoyable holiday at School House Cottage, the village of Coxswold is charming and there is a lot to do in this part of Yorkshire."

The cottage rooms were comfortable and we appreciated the provisions that had been left for us. Two items of criticism if we may please. 1. The wi-fi is poor in the cottage! I mentioned it to Liz and she explained it was because the Router was in the other half of the building and the thickness of the walls prevented a good signal. I would suggest a booster unit is fitted in the cottage to improve the signal, this is needed as people are more and more dependant on the internet these days. It also had an effect on the T.V reception and we could not use our Amazon fire stick in the the t.v in the Lounge. 2. There is no means of controlling the central heating other than altering the thermostatic valves on the radiators. The lounge was quite cool at night and the only form of heating in the evenings was the wood burning stove. Logs and coal were provided but ran out after five days. I wasn't sure where to get more (some written information about the heating may help?) I asked for some more coal or logs, and was told where the shop was? However Liz did kindly supply more logs for the last two nights. If you are saying the Fuel and power are included in the rent, there should be enough/some more at hand. These two items did not spoil our holiday, overall the standard at the cottage was very good

  • "The cottage was lovely, really beautifully decorated and having the touches of fresh bread, eggs, milk etc was so kind."

The bed was really comfy and everything worked well. The village was really quaint and lovely to explore with the abbey a short cycle (or longer walk away!) the local pub which is literally a 2min walk up the road serves a delicious Sunday lunch too. The only thing I would say is it would have been nicer to have a better store of logs and kindling so we could get the fire going more often as it got a bit chilly on some evenings and there were only a few there. The heating Did come on in the mornings and later evenings but it’s when we got in from a day out on occasion it was a tad chilly. But we had a fantastic holiday and was such a pleasure to visit a beautiful place in Yorkshire! So many things to do and places to visit, we definitely hope to return!
