  • "Couldn’t use all the rooms we had paid for as radiators were faulty and no heating coming through on a freezing cold weekend."

Not adequate pots cooking facilities for the amount of people that can accommodate the property. Ovens dirty and shelves not fitting properly. So hard to cook. Shame because lovely place just not well maintained and cleaned.

The heating was not up to 20 degrees as I set the app wrong as I was in Abu Dhabi as I explained to you and you seemed OK with. Within 2 hours of your arrival it was up to temperature and there is no fault as it has been checked out. The room you refer to was a conservatory and it was minus 5 outside so it did take longer to warm up as anyone with a conservatory through winter will tell you. There was no dirt in the cooker and it seems very strange that you were happy with everything until we deducted money from you good housekeeping bond for.the damage you caused and the disgusting state you left the house in. I do not accept the house was dirty we have an amazing cleaning team who actually call and see guests a few hours after they arrive and you told her everything was perfect. She checks if everything is OK and if there is anything you need. It was my fault with the heating I admit that and because of the time difference I set the heating to come on at 2pm instead of 12pm via my online app. By 6.40pm it was 19.degrees Property Owner

  • "Overall a good value stay for a large party of mixed ages."

Quiet road, garden and hot tub enjoyed by all, ( a bit too highly chlorinated for little ones-maybe that can be adjusted?) Lounge with adjoining room most suitable to supervise children at play without losing out on grown-up togetherness. Owners' communication before and during stay were very prompt and always helpful. Only wish I had asked a little sooner Could do with better cutlery for more enjoyment of meals, rather camping-style , but not a problem as such.

Thank you for your feedback, we will take on board your comments about the cutlery. Really please you enjoyed your stay with us Property Owner

  • "Our first impression was that the house was spacious and clean."

However, having looked around, there were some major issues with cleaning and maintenance. Other people’s dog poo bags were left outside by a plant pot and poo in the rear garden, which we cleaned up. The cigarette butt holder was rammed full and butts had fallen onto the ground. There were cobwebs in most rooms which had been there for some time along with higher level dust. Kitchen pans/grill tray still had fat/food residue and some plates were not clean. We had to wash before using some. One cooker top was splattered in fat. One bedroom had peanuts under the bed. Toilet brushes/holders were all filthy, one had poo in the brush. The spa bath plug was full of hair, which we had to remove for the water to drain and the same with the downstairs shower room. This shower was also mouldy/dirty and the tray moved when it was stood on - it had a mat stuck to it with sealant which looked disgusting. The shower in the en-suite to bedroom 3 had a pungent, stagnant water smell and we bought bleach to get rid of the smell which had crept into the bedroom. The upstairs en-suite shower tray was in the same condition as the downstairs shower room but also had a rusty shower pipe and rust on the door and light. We also found (as a previous review last October) the same issue with the fridge/freezer doors being joined together which made the freezer ice up and unusable. Two trays on the fridge door were cracked. The lounge door was missing its catch so could not be closed. Snug door was tricky to lock/unlock. DVD player was not connected and, when plugged in, did not work. We had to buy batteries for the remote controls which did not work/missing. When going into the back entrance, the door mat is not thick enough for its inset and is a trip hazard. None of the extractor fans work. The bedroom across the garage needs another light in the garage to illuminate the steps when leaving that bedroom. The WC upstairs has a broken tap and light fitting which is taped up. The heating control has been changed and the heating is only on for 6 hours a day being controlled by the owners phone. As we had snow one night it was cold for the 1 year old in our party so contacted the owner who said he would put it on constant, but never did. He turns the heating off in April according to the welcome book, which is outdated. On a positive note, the property is spacious and well equipped, the owner is approachable and visited before we left to hear our concerns. He has, apparently, now spoken to his cleaners and changed the broken tap. We do have photos of the issue mentioned.

I apologise if the last guests had not disposed of their bags correctly, we provide bins and trailers for them to do so. We did not see or would have done so ourselves. On the way around the house the cobwebs you pointed out were not there on your arrival. We get a lot of cobwebs as it is a very dry house. The cleaners go round with an extendable pole and remove them all every changeover. I apologise if the crockery was not checked properly or put away dirty. I have raised this with my cleaning team and it will be checked more thoroughly. All our bathrooms have the plugholes regularly cleaned and after EVERY changeover we put bleach in all the plugholes and toilets so it always smells fresh. On examination all the plugholes were clean and had no smell coming from them. Rusty shower pipe was changed. We found a few specs of mould had started in the groutwork which were sprayed with a remover and now gone The fridge and freezer doors have now been separated and open independently from each other. The broken tap was not broken but had come slightly loose which was wear and tear, 30 seconds and a wrench and you will be pleased to know it is back to its former self Heating control is brand new 3 months ago and the instruction book is detailed. • "There was 9 of us from 5 different areas."

the couple staying in the upstairs on suite said the mattress was very lumpy, the shower was dirty and have taken pictures of it.under the Matt was awful. the end of the bed had 2 dead spiders under the duvet and hit there head various times on the beams. the whole room needed a good fettle. the 2 rooms upstairs mattresses were awful lumpy and old .the down stairs bathroom with shower was like the upstairs one under the mat was awful and they have taken pics of that as well. the main issue was the 3rd bedroom down stairs was not in the main house y.we needed it as my 95 year old mum had to be down stairs and my disabled partner and my 73 year old who has cancer issues so needed no steps.and finally my brother had the 3rd dog so can not have any of the upstairs rooms as dogs have to stay down stairs but are not allowed to be left alone at any time. so this 4th down stairs room is down 2 steps into a double garage lots of leaves and cold and across up to 2 more steps into the room. which was cold as connected to the garage. and i did not see this in the description. so this ment no one wanted to sleep in there and my sister had to stay upstairs instead. not happy having to walk up the stairs every day.we found 50th birthday balloons behind one of the sofas in the main living room and rubbish under it. a long blue sort of bed runner stuffed behind another settee and a fork.the tv in the quite room coming off the main room had a tv but it took me and my brother 2 hours to get it to work a rite palaver.and the main tv in the main room on the wall was a pain as well eventually buying new batteries as the remote did not work..surely they should be checked there working every time it is leased.the 2 ovens do not work properly.the built in one on the left gets hardly hot. and the other one new world, the oven took 5 hours to cook roast spuds which would normally take no more then 2 hours in a normal oven.the main fridge freezer in the kitchen is as had been mentioned by others is a joke.every time you open the fridge this opens both the fridge and the freezer.the door is as one not separate so the freezer had to be defrosted twice putting water from the lumps of ice on to the floor.slip hazard, the doors should be separate .as the build up of ice stops the door from sealing .making the ice form outside of the seals.also the tumble dryer does not dry the clothes as every 1 min it turns it self off.all in all not a good stay.if you want to see the pictures from my brother i will get him to send them to you.if they pay a company to clean the house they need to find a proper cleaning company.as they are letting them down.

Thank you for your comments, all your comments have been taken on board. Our cleaners have now been replaced as the standard was not up to what I was laying them generously for. 3 mattresses replaced and fridge door sorted. Sorry if you were confused regarding the layout but it is clearly shown on Sykes lage when booking. Ovens also replaced Property Owner

I especially loved the recliners in the lounge, just what was need after a full day out walking. Having the enclosed garden was fantastic for our 3 dogs. The only small thing I would ask to be changed are the mattresses on the bunk beds, which unfortunately were quite uncomfortable and the frame was very creaky. The house is very well presented. The reclining sofa's in the living room are perfect after a day out walking. The amount of space for parking was great after years of having to mess around with Permits and ensuring we swap tickets over each morning. We comfortably fit 6 cars within the property and there was easily enough room for 1 or 2 more without blocking anyone else in. Plenty of room in for food and drinks in the 2 fridge freezers and utility room. This is by far the best property we have rented in Scarborough. The only slight issues that we had found was the dial-up level of Internet coming from the WiFi (the owner spoke with BT and apparently the property will have Fibre broadband shortly, unfortunately this didn't happen during our stay), of which the owner was quick to deal with and respond. Communication was great. We have booked to stay again.

  • "Before I go into the specifics of this review, I would like to tell you about the group."

We were a group of 12 people from one family the age group was late twenties to Mid 90s. The surrounding area had a lot to offer and Filey Whitby and York were all in easy reach out the property. The property was the problem. The upstairs had 4 bedrooms and only one had en suit facilities. Every one else had to go downstairs to shower and use the toilet. One of the rooms was basically a cupboard with no window. Downstairs had only en suit room so the rest of the guests had to use the same bathroom toilet and shower facilities. The shower room cubical was very small and so was the sink in that room. The temperature of the showers fluctuated depending on who was flushing the toilet and running a tap. There was a smell coming from the kitchen because the drains and pipe work were blocked. We had to use a plunger to clear the kitchen sink the bathroom sink and the bath. The fact that there were 2 plungers available would suggest that this problem had occurred before. The kitchen equipment was very basic and would not look out of place in your camping gear. Some of the pots were in poor condition with the non stick scraped away and handles melted. The cooker hood just did not work. There was a crack in the wall in the conservatory that let in a draught. Overall the house was in need of a refurbish. We have stayed in many houses before and have NEVER felt the need to complain but this needs to said for the sake of the future tenants, the Owners and Sykes cottages. Had there been a visitors book these issues could have been resolved much earlier than this. We enjoyed our holiday due to the area it’s in and the company NOT DUE TO THE ACCOMMODATION. We would not recommend this house. Unfortunately for Sykes its the first time we have used them as a medium to book a holiday and sadly reflects badly on them too.
