  • "General maintenance of a very poor standard."

Skirting boards coming away from walls, tiling cracked in bathroom, mold around bath trims, no 2 doors same colour, wallpaper peeling on staircase, loose post on staircase, wallpaper badly done, tiling in kitchen extremely untidy, sealant around fireplace terrible. I have photos of these items if you want me to send them. I know this is a very old cottage but the standard of maintenance is terrible and well below what I would expect. Brian Stanworth.

thank you for your comments. We are expecting to close for maintenance as the bathroom and staircase were our next maintenance jobs. I am sorry you feel that it is such a poor standard. Property Owner

The scenery is idyllic and the cottage was clean and comfortable. Being so close to where the steam railway runs is a joy! I think the only thing that would have been nice in the cottage is a dishwasher but appreciate the space in the kitchen probably doesn't allow for this. It didn't however detract from our visit.

It's a bit tired and in need of an upgrade with four people there the sofas are not big enough the quilts on the beds are too thin for colder weather. It's in need of a freezer because there are no supermarkets near by. But this said enjoyed our stay.

I am very sorry that you feel that the cottage did not offer the quality that you expected. The quilts were new on the beds the day before you arrived so your comments will be taken and I will look at the tog value and increase them, I shall also increase the number of fleeces provided for those who still need a little more heat Property Owner

Lovely cottage in an idyllic location. We got to see steam trains right past our window and lots of wildlife right by us including deer, pheasant and rabbits again right outside our window! The cottage is lovely and has everything you need for a weeks stay. It was homely, clean and felt really cosy. The owner set up the high chair and travel cot for us as they knew we were arriving late which was really helpful. Valley Esk is a wonderful location close to many different attractions. Grosmont is a 20min walk away and in the other direction you could walk to Goathland. Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay and Scarborough are a fairly short drive away for the beach and sea. Hutton Le Hole is picturesque and definitely worth a visit. Thanks for a wonderful stay!! This cottage definitely exceeded our expectations!

It is set in an idyllic situation. It is in a row of Victorian cottages which look out over the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. We really enjoyed the fact that, once we had arrived, we hardly had to use the car at all. There are lots of walks from the doorstep, including to Grosmont, Goathland, Egton Bridge and Sleights. If you love railways and the countryside, as we do, it is an ideal place to stay. The owner is very helpful when you contact her and the cottage is homely and comfortable. The owners of the other cottages are all very friendly too.

It is comfortable, some fixtures are a little tired but not enough to spoil our stay. The only problem for us was the lack of an enclosed garden, our dog is well behaved with good recall but this wouldn't be suitable for a dog who likes to wander unless you take them on a lead for every toilet trip. We had a lovely stay and will be back!

  • "Over all we had a good holiday at this cottage."

We had just one major problem with a broken light fitting, but after a phone call that evening to the owner, an electrician arrived the next morning and fixed it. Very satisfied with that response. We have just two minor things to bring to your attention. First: And this can be a problem at many cottages we visit, and that is the lack of sufficient storage space for food items in the kitchen. This cottage was no different from 95% of cottages we have rented in that it had insufficient storage cupboard. What cupboards it did have, and it did have quite a lot of them, BUT the were almost all being used for Plates, pans, etc. All of which is needed and it was well appointed with these things, just lack of space for the items we wished to store. Second: This is basically a very minor item. The sink in the bathroom had a crack in it. It didn't stop us using it, but I feel it would be better if it was not there. I have no wish to be negative about this cottage because that would NOT be a true reflection of it, I would say that we 98% satisfied with it.

A large crack in bathroom hand basin, bath very worn on the bottom, toilet wouldn’t flush on the day after we arrived. Rang owner and she called a plumber. Plumber put a new part in the toilet and all was well until on the Wednesday evening it would not flush again. Thursday morning rang owner told her we were already out of the cottage for the day and would not be there to let the plumber in. Two neighbours had keys for access. We returned back to the cottage to find a card through the letterbox from the plumber saying called today but no one was in. From Wednesday evening to departure on Friday morning we were filling a bucket of water to flush the toilet. The bathroom suite is ready for replacing. I would not stay in this cottage again and would not recommend this cottage. Fantastic setting but cottage needed some money spending on it.

  • "We loved the location of this sweet cottage."

Set down in Esk Valley, It was just perfect for us. No parking straight next to the cottage, but we were made aware of this beforehand and there is a little car park a few houses down. Plus you go in the back entrance, which is not a problem at all. We could look out in the mornings and see the cows and calves in the field in front of the cottage. From the bedroom window, there was a clear view of the rail tracks for the steam trains, we looked out on numerous occasions and watched it go by in awe. Plus in the next-door-but-one neighbours front garden, we watched every morning the birds on the feeders, regularly spotting and watching a woodpecker. We are keen bird watchers and this was just so lovely for us. From the car park there is a footpath which was an old rail track, which can take you two ways. One way you can walk to Grosmont, which has a fantastic steam railway station and the other way we walked as far as Goathland which was lovely going through a sheep field, past a stream/beck and runs over rocks and through woodlands and is very picturesque. The whole area is beautiful and we thoroughly enjoyed going out every day from this cottage. The only thing we were sad about, is that we were only there for 4 nights, we wanted to stay much longer. Hoping to come back and stay longer next time.

Presumably the cleaner is not asked to clean to this level. It is a shame because each time the oven is used the kitchen filled with smoke when the door was opened.
