Scotton is a small rural village two miles from Knaresborough. It is notable as the boyhood home of Guy Fawkes, whose residence still stands on the edge of the village. Due to the village's connection with Fawkes, at the annual bonfire night celebration, although there is a bonfire and fireworks, there is no guy burned on the fire. Nearby, Knaresborough is an ancient market and Spa town on the fringe of the Yorkshire Dales, overlooking the River Nidd, and is one of the prettiest towns in North Yorkshire. Visit Mother Shipton's well, the Courthouse Museum, "Ye Oldest Chymist Shoppe in England" which dates back to 1720 and the House in the Rock. Enjoy wonderful walks by the river, cycling, climbing, fishing, boating or just take in the tranquil atmosphere and beautiful scenery. There are many interesting shops and galleries, and a market on Wednesdays. The historic cathedral cities of Ripon and York are close by, as are the Spa town of Harrogate, the great stately homes of Castle Howard and Harewood House, the Cistercian Abbeys of Fountains, Rievaulx and Jervaulx, and the castles of Middleham, Bolton and Richmond.

Perfect cottage for our needs as a young family.
Mr Falzon, Attarg, January 2012
The cottage was perfect! Well presented and a real home-from-home. The owner was most friendly and helpful. The pub opposite was great, especially the food and pub quiz. Although it rained everyday we had a fantastic stay. Thank you.
Mr Russell, Bexley, July 2011
Ferndene Cottage was lovely, it was very clean with a very well equipped kitchen and a lovely garden. There were even cleaning products, plenty of clean tea towels etc. My husband stayed one night then I stayed on with my son aged 22. We found the cottage very suitable. Scotton is a lovely, quiet and safe area. There is a good bus service (bus stop just around the corner) to Knaresborough, Harrogate and Ripon. Many thanks. It is very likely that I will book another cottage in the future.
