Despite the cold and rather wild weather outside we felt warm and cosy when inside. The kitchen was well equipped and we appreciated the bottle of wine we discovered in the fridge on our arrival. A previous review had indicated there wasn't a caterer but I found 2 so if coffee's your thing fear not, I was also pleased to find a digital scale. Washing up liquid, hand wash and a few dishwasher tablets and washing pods were provided but you will need your own cleaning products. We found the best and safest way to walk into Whitby was via the cinder trail which is easily accessed via a short walk up the hill towards the road, following the path to the right just after you go under the viaduct. It took us around 20 minutes to get into town. A torch is recommended if walking the route in the dark. In the daylight there are great views across to the abbey. The only thing we thought was missing was a visitors book, we always like to look to see where people recommend for days out and places to eat so my recommendations are: The Whitby Museum for an eclectic collection and the best homemade cakes in the café. We had a great walk from Grosmont to Goathland and back again, and also enjoyed the walk from Goathland to the Mallyan Spout waterfall We went to Botham's for more cakes and the Magpie cafe for fish and chips (but do book to avoid disappointment)

  • "Berry Banks was very comfortable, had all the facilities you might want and is in a great location."

However, we felt that the cleanliness really let it down. We have stayed in a different cottage on the same block, for two separate weeks in 2021, and that cottage was noticeably cleaner and left us wishing we had stuck with what we know. The 'obvious' areas were in the main clean, but it did look like someone had just ignored the rest of the property. This was especially frustrating given that there is a sign, on the wall in the cottage that relates to Covid and the extra cleaning??? It's also the first time we have ever stopped in a cottage and there were no cleaning products - we looked under the sink (where they always tend to be), under the stairs, and in the bathrooms. We ended up supplying our own cleaning wipes. It was also the first time since Covid started that we had stayed in a property where no anti-bacterial handwash was provided. There was a pale brown stain under one of the toilet seats, dried toothpaste down the side of the main bathroom sink, the floor areas around the back of the toilet bowls and sinks were very dirty, the metal toilet roll holders and toilet brush lids were thick with dust and had stains on them, the skirting boards were dirty, there were a number of cobwebs on walls, the white mugs were all stained - why use white in a holiday rental when they tend to stain, the tops of the tea/coffee containers were dirty. Plus, the bottom sheet on the double bed didn't fully fit (not an issue in itself) but it left in full view a large yellowy/brown stain that made you question the cleanliness. There was also black ‘mould’ where the shower glass met the edge of the bath. It's the first time we have had to complain like this, and we stop in many different cottages throughout the year so it's sad when one sticks in your memory for the wrong reason.

We are very distraught to receive this review, as this is not in keeping with our previous good reviews of Berry Banks Cottage. We remind guests to please make us or the cleaning team aware of any issues during your stay, we can then act on these immediately and rectify. due to the pandemic and fear of transmission we have been advised not to leave lots of items in the property, there are also guests that are sensitive to certain products. I am very sorry if there were any cleanliness issues during your stay, the cleaner has been made aware of this feedback, we have taken this onboard, but just wish we could have been given the opportunity to resolve this for you during your holiday. It looks just like the photos. Clean, tidy and welcoming. We didnt want to come home. Nice location...able to walk into Whitby along the viaduct, 30 min drive into scarborough. Asda deliver to the cottage which was great although if I'd done my homework there is an aldi and sainsburys just a 5 minute drive away. Whitby is lovely lots to do. Although we didn't manage a beach day there so not sure how convenient parking is for the beach. Would definitely visit the cottage again. It had everything we needed in the kitchen. The only thing missing was the dvd player as we took loads of films. But we had our now TV stick so we're OK for films for the kids. They do have a smart TV so I'm sure alot is able to be viewed via that. Thank you berry banks for a lovely holiday . Xxxx

  • "We stayed at Berry Banks the week before Christmas."

The weather was mixed - some snow and rain - but the townhouse (on the little estate above the river) was clean ,tidy, warm and comfortable. Parking is in a large communal area close to the house. Generally, the place was very well equipped (particularly the kitchen which was light and airy). Although the TV and wifi were fine - unfortunately there wasn't a DVD player (we linked up the laptop instead). There were plenty of books and games. There are extensive, open views of the fields and moors from all the rooms at the back - the front (including the bedroom with the balcony) looks over the river and the viaduct. There's also large private patio area at the back which I'm sure is a delight in summer (not really used much by us in December - other than feeding the birds). It was quite wet whilst we were in Whitby and one of the disadvantages of the balcony which also serves as a sort of cover to the entrance area to the front door are the drips. As the balcony is not solid - its wet when its raining and drips on you for ages after its stopped. Berry Banks is far enough out of Whitby to be quiet and peaceful but shops and stores are quickly available locally and there's easy access to the town itself. Its also a good base for trips out to both the coast and the moors. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and I would certainly use this property again.

There are nice but fairly strenuous walks round about as the area is quite hilly. Sitting on the decking at the back of the property we were able to see squirrels, ducks (who actually seem to be very tame and actually come onto the decking to visit) and a great variety of other birds including jay, magpie, wren and a selection of songbirds. The only drawback is that there is no disabled access. To get to the property you have to walk up a fairly steep set of steps, not a problem for us but would be for anyone who has difficulty walking.
