Overlooking the River Spey, in the Cairngorms National Park (Britain's largest), Newtonmore has several shops and pubs, as well as two excellent, award-winning museums - the Highland Folk Museum and Clan MacPherson Museum. The village may seem familiar as you wander around, as it was the setting for the popular TV series “Monarch of the Glen”. Newtonmore's 'Wildcat Trail' is a 7-mile popular circular walk around the edge of the village, taking in the River Spey with woodland, moorland and wonderful views across the valley to the Cairngorms, and behind the village to the Monadhliath mountains - a fitting introduction to the delights of the National Park. The area offers fine golf, fishing, pony trekking, walking, bird-watching, cycling, mountain-biking, climbing and skiing, making it an ideal base from which to discover all that this scenic area of Scotland has to offer.
A very special property which oozes character, The Old Station is a clever conversion of the old Victorian station adjacent to the platform at Newtonmore, offering rail journeys along this highly scenic line, north to Inverness and south to Perth and Edinburgh. This delightfully quirky property retains many of its unusual features, including the old safe, which has been incorporated into the sitting room décor, and original signs for the waiting room and station master's office. Decorated to a high standard, this charming single storey property is in an ideal location to explore the popular village (setting for TV's “Monarch of the Glen”), enjoy the outdoor activities of the Cairngorms National Park and simply savour the beauty of the Highlands of Scotland - a perfect base for a holiday at any time of year!

I spoke to the owner a couple of days before we left and he was very helpful. On arrival we were really impressed with the Old Station, a lot of time, effort and care has been taken to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The furnishings are of a high standard and everything you could wish for to make your stay a happy one - even a slow cooker which came in handy! There are lots of local walks "The Wild Cat Trail" is great and the village itself is a beautiful place as is the whole area and yes the train drivers all wave to you as they leave the station. Will be booking again.
Mrs Collinge, Todmorden, September 2011
Within close proximity of a wide variety of interesting things to do without being crowded with tourists. The quirkiness of staying in a railway cottage and good to see the trains go by - drivers waved to us each day.
