  • "Old Grumbeg is in a spectacular location, fully equipped and ever so peaceful."

The animal neighbours add to the experience and you will never be short of a sheep, deer or stag. The landscape is stunning and the house is so comfy to return to after a day exploring the amazing area.

Very clean, cosy and well equipped. We went very well prepared as the listing advises which helped us enjoy our stay without having to worry about needing to incorporate a trip to the shop in our days out too often. Owners were very helpful and responsive to any queries. Would love to return one day as the area has so much to offer and allows you to really switch off.

Not enough hot water, it took a long time to heat up for surficant to have a bath, only ever enough warm water not hit water to fill less than half a bath, temp limiter needs to be increased and be able to get heat and hot water sooner than planning hours in advance, cottage was cold, make sure you take your own wood for the fire, nicely decorated comfortable once the heating kicked in, but when off quickly got cold

  • "We had an absolutely magical stay at Old Grumbeg Cottage."

It was all we'd hoped for, a beautiful remote setting with stunning scenery as far as the eye could see! So many places of natural and historical interest to visit in the area, and we felt privileged to be able to experience a very snowy landscape. The wildlife is astonishing, the stars were the Red Deer, which we saw in great numbers, and very close to the cottage! Truly majestic. The cottage itself was exactly as presented, clean, comfortable, well equipped....a perfect base for us to enjoy. Simon, the host, provided a wealth of helpful information, and communication very easy via message when required. Cannot recommend highly enough, we wouldn't hesitate to return. Memories of a wonderful week will stay with us for a long time.

  • "Lovely cottage with beautiful views."

We spent 5 nights there in Feb 2023. The house is very comfortable, clean and well equipped. It's also warm with the open fire and electric radiators. There's a stove in the kitchen but we didn't use that. We flew into Inverness and rented a car. If you're doing that, it's worth doing a click and collect at Morrisons or Tesco for the supplies you will need for the week. You can get firewood at either, but actually it's better quality and value from the stores in Bettyhill and the surrounding area. Nothing much was open hospitality wise in February, but the Store Cafe in Bettyhill was good. Enjoy the amazing scenery and isolation! Highly recommended.

Perfect for getting away from it all. Internet perfect, beds comfy, everything clean and tidy. Make sure you get provisions before you arrive as it’s a 2hr drive to a decent size supermarket. We could not fault it.

It was an utter pleasure to share our special place with you and thanks for the great feedback. Property Owner

Lovely cottage by the Loch in a remote part of Scotland. Only negative was having to source my own wood for the fire. Was informed in advance but resented having to find space in the car for the wood along with all our belongings.

  • "Generally happy with our stay."

We had a fairly wet week unfortunately. Drying out our wet walking gear was a bit awkward as the drying rack got in the way. One of those ceiling pulley racks above the kitchen stove would be useful. There was the issue with the kitchen tap which was a bit annoying when trying to wash dishes and the shower pressure was a bit underwhelming

  • "Fantastic place, just as advertised."

Grumbeg cottage was just as we pictured, and was a supremely relaxing and cosy place to spend 10 days in the Highlands. It's very quiet, pretty much the only thing you hear at night are the sheep who sometimes wander into the garden. We used it as a base for cycling, hiking and exploring the Highlands and it was the perfect place to come back to every night.

Pretty well equipped, great toaster, efficient bread maker and brilliant music system with better wi fi than Hertfordshire!! Do make sure you plan carefully and bring everything you need for your stay as shops are indeed a long way away and quite limited. There is plenty of storage space though. We are looking forward to staying there again. The views and location are tremendous and the sheep friendly!

  • "Our one week stay at Old Grumbeg cottage was fantastic because it was very comfortable, warm (due to heating and beautiful open fires) and very well equipped."

We bought logs and coal from Wickes in Inverness on our way to the cottage. All the non perishable basics like tea, sugar, salt, pepper and even some pasta were in the kitchen cupboards. Views are out of this world. No internet, phone connection or terrestrial TV allowed us to unwind with a wee dram of whiskey, a game of Scrabble in front of the open fire followed by a DVD film. Just what we needed.

Views from the house onto the loch are beautiful to wake up to on a clear day. A good base to explore the highlands with walks, beaches and scenery to enjoy. The house had everything we needed, with a cosy fire on each night to end our day. Plenty of space for two adults and our toddler. A well equipped kitchen and comfortable beds. We will be back to explore the area more in the future.

  • "We had a wonderful stay and thoroughly enjoyed our week at Old Grumbeg."

It’s beautifully decorated inside with some really homely and considerate touches. We really enjoyed using Bluetooth speaker in the kitchen and the kitchen appliances were really good quality. I’d say if you’re planning to do a bit of cooking to take a stew pot and baking dish with you, that’s not meant as a criticism, we just would have found them useful. The location of the cottage is excellent with beautiful views and was great base from which to explore. We loved listening to the deer calling to one another in the evening/night. We even spotted some in the garden from the kitchen window, which was lovely. I can’t recommend this place highly enough and hope to stay there again one day.

So it very much met what I expected, together with no TV or internet, which was also what I expected and was aiming for. The cottage surrounds are in nature with views to the loch and beyond so you can literally step out of the front door and "start walking". This is an excellent base for holidaying in Sutherland and Caithness whether you want landscape, walking, flora and fauna, fishing, food, whisky, history, culture, inter alia. I squeezed in a day trip to Orkney too! The owner went out of his way to be helpful including giving ideas for places to go.
