Location: Melness

Tongue 6 miles; Durness 35 miles; Thurso 45 miles.

Around 90 miles from Inverness, Melness is an attractive coastal village situated in the heart of the "Mackay Country" and is ideally placed for touring this remote and beautiful area of the Northern Highlands. Melness is one of a series of crofting townships, which grew up around the coastline following the clearances when crofters were evicted from their smallholdings inland. Melness is situated centrally between John O'Groats and Durness, where Smoo Cave, Cape Wrath and the Durness Golf Course are well worth a visit. The daily ferry to Orkney is a 1 hour drive along the coast, and John O'Groats and The Castle of Mey are a little further on. With stunning views over the local islands, Melness is ideal for quiet coastal walks and bird watching, and is renowned for its golden sandy beaches. There are also several good local hotels close by offering fresh local fayre.

Previous visitors' comments about Crossroads:

We came to reminisce after forty years; it was wonderful. The views fantastic, location perfect. The owner was very friendly, made us feel at home. Even rang to thank us for leaving everything clean and tidy; though were not sure she realised she was ringing Australia!
Mr Smith, Bowen, September 2012

The views were wonderful from the cottage. We loved it all.
Mrs Taylor, Glenrothes, July 2012

A lovely property with stunning views. Great dog/child friendly garden. Plenty of everything in the cottage, and comfortable, clean beds. Would recommend very highly as a get away from it all.
