  • "The cottage was spacious, well equipped and very clean, close to all amenities."

The welcome pack was much appreciated. The only downside was that building work started next door midweek. We would definitely return.

  • "The cleaner is not thorough tiles over the bath are ground with dirt and so is the shower screen."

Fridge had not been cleaned a previous spillage evident. The kitchen bin was filthy. The bin in the downstairs toilet was broken and could not be used. The wood burner has a fierce draft even when all air vents closed resulting in a lot of extra wood being used during a very cold week. The ashes tray was rusted through and the fire may need replacing. We did find the cottage welcoming and comfortable with all we needed and extremely well located but it could have been perfect if these issues are addressed.

Well equipped kitchen, comfy beds. What more can you want to explore nearby. Tucked away just off the main street and not too invaded by the day trippers. Very handy for excellent local pub/restaurant Would return again.

The island is beautiful with lots of walks from the house. Really relaxing time. Just one small niggle and only because it was the new year and shops were closed. There was no kindling or fire lighters for the log burner. Would definitely book again

  • "I left some comments in the visitor's book."

It is an excellent property, beautifully furnished but sadly let down by several small things mainly linked to the ongoing care of the property - issues with cleanliness and sufficient provision of simple basic items (loo roll, rinse aid, salt, oil...) and proper care of the bins. Because previous occupants had not followed the guidelines we ended up moving someone else's dirty nappies from the recycling bin into landfill in order to put the blue bin out on the appropriate day. We felt this was something which should have been attended to before our arrival. Sorry to sound grumpy - it is a lovely cottage and we did enjoy our week"

  • "A great cottage in a fantastic location."

The cottage has lots of great features and is ideally located for a week on Holy Island. We had some lovely walks and meals in the local pubs. Even though we'd have ideally liked a garden, having private space in the small back yard was excellent. Overall, this was a great find. Thank you!

  • "Cottage is located in the heart of Holy Island settlement."

It has a spacious living room , good sized and well stocked kitchen 2 toilets /bathroom & 3 bedrooms of average size. All décor is fresh and well appointed to modern standard. Small rear walled courtyard but big enough & private with views towards the castle. You have to park about 20 metres away from the front door as Fenkle Street is single car width ,although hardly any through traffic ,but we never had a problem parking. Heating is electric radiators with a log burning stove ( not needed in June) the first basket is free with a £10 charge for refills the rear courtyard having a wood store supply. Ground floor is wood flooring upstairs carpeted except the bath room. Goodie hamper provided on arrival. television in living room and kitchen. Key lock system to access , easy to use 2 sets of keys for front & back doors. Fenkle Street does get a few day trippers walking by but as a side street little compared to Marygate that leads to the Castle. We would happily stay here again.

  • "This is one of the best properties I have stayed in."

Even though it is an old stone built house, the facilities were modern and user friendly. On cold nights, the heating system was more than adequate, supplemented by the log burner in the lounge. Plan your groceries in advance though, the Post Office on the island supplies basic necessities such as milk or bread, but is very limited above that. Either bring in your own food and drink or you can order from the supermarkets near Berwick-Upon-Tweed who do home deliveries based on the crossing times across the causeway, so be prepared to be flexible.

So much we wanted to buy it! Loved the welcome basket, great location, has everything we needed, and so lovely to be able to hear the waves from the back bedroom. Attention to detail and cleanliness is also fabulous. The only things we would say is that we found if you have more than 3 people staying the sofa gets a bit cosy and there not much else to sit on. There’s definitely enough space for more seating as the lounge is lovely and large! We come back to the island every year and this has now become the place we will stay each time! Loved our stay thank you.

About the location

HOLY ISLAND

Berwick-upon-Tweed 14 miles; Bamburgh 16miles; Seahouses 18 miles

Holy Island is home to Lindisfarne Priory, one of the most important centres of early Christianity in Anglo Saxon England. The monastery was founded in AD 635 by St Aiden, but the island is more famously associated with St Cuthbert whose remains were carried by monks to Durham, and there they still remain. The island is now a popular tourist attraction with many visitors making a pilgrimage to the priory or following in the footsteps of the monks along St Cuthbert’s Way. Situated in the heart of the Heritage Coastline, the exciting journey to Holy Island begins with the essential check of the tides, the island is accessed via a long causeway which is impassable once the tide comes in. There is ample central parking and a short stroll will take you to the priory. The village itself has quaint tea rooms and pubs and a museum detailing the island’s interesting history. Those who enjoy the great outdoors will be delighted with the Northumberland Coastal Path, which runs through Beal just two miles inland and onwards down the Heritage Coast, offering stunning scenery along the way. Holy Island is within easy reach of both St Oswald's Way and St Cuthbert's Way and there are some great birdwatching sites nearby. Northumberland’s beautiful coastline, Alnwick Castle and Gardens, the Cheviots and the fascinating border town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, are all only a short drive away. The pretty village of Ford with its castle and craft shops is 13 miles away, part of the Ford and Etal Estate which has facilities for cycling and fishing, as well as a mini railway – ideal for all the family. There are also excellent golfing opportunities, with eight golf courses within 20 miles of Holy Island. A superb base for exploring all that the region has to offer.
