Alnmouth 9 miles; Alnwick 11 miles.
Acklington is a small rural village located just a few miles from the coast and its near neighbour Warkworth. The village has a pub with bar and restaurant (open weekends only in the winter) and, with the many activities and groups held locally, offers a real sense of community spirit. The River Coquet meanders past the village, with a picturesque view from Guyzance Bridge. There is a limited bus and train service to Alnwick, Newcastle and Alnmouth, and the whole of the coast is within easy driving distance. Warkworth, 4 miles away, is a pretty village, dominated by the dramatic ruins of its 12th Century castle. The main street is lined with Georgian and early Victorian houses and there is an exceptional range of galleries and antique shops, a village shop-cum-post office, pubs, restaurants and gift shops to suit all tastes. Warkworth has its own stretch of sandy beach and a 9-hole 'pay and play' golf course. Also within easy touring distance are Hadrian's Wall, Bamburgh Castle, Holy Island, the Farne Islands, several wonderful beaches and Alnwick Garden with its remarkable water cascade.

Previous visitors' comments about Shunting Cottage:
The location was perfect for getting to the coast. The owners were very friendly. Nice, cosy base to return to after a wintry day on the beach.
Mr Newman, Leeds, February 2012
Owners next door were very helpful without being intrusive. Property was ideally situated for visiting the many attractions in the area - e.g Alnwick, Lindisfarne, Edinburgh (park the car and catch the train at Alnmouth!)
Hadrian's Wall.

Very friendly and helpful owner. Lots of information on things to see and do in the area. Very good for dog owners, lots of walks, beaches, birdwatching, golf etc. Weather was great too.
