Set in the heart of the Cheviots, on the edge of the Northumberland National Park, the unspoilt village of Elsdon lies in a sheltered hollow amidst beautiful fells, rolling moorland and woodlands. The area is steeped in Northumbrian history, and has numerous listed sites within the Parish, dominated by the fortified Pele Tower. The village has an extensive village green, whilst the pub dates back to the mid 1700's and retains lots of character and atmosphere. There is a good range of shops in the small but attractive market town of Rothbury which is within easy driving distance. This is spectacular walking and cycling country, with the National Cycle Route (No 68) running close by. A peaceful area full of interest to explore!
Elsdon 1.25 miles. A stone-built, semi-detached cottage situated next to the owners’ home, close to the scattered village of Elsdon and the stunning Northumberland National Park. Compact, comfortable accommodation, this Elsdon cottage is ideal for friends, families or perhaps a couple looking for a romantic retreat in this beautiful county. The Old Hayloft formed part of a coaching inn, originally built in 1835, and used to serve the old toll road between England and Scotland. This Northumberland cottage has two first floor bedrooms, consisting of one king-size double and one adult bunks, whilst downstairs there is a bathroom and a light and airy open plan living area with a well-equipped kitchen, dining area and a cosy sitting area with large glass doors, from which you can admire the pretty views of the fields opposite. Outside this Elsdon cottage there is an enclosed gravelled area with furniture, which provides a perfect place to put your feet up with a refreshing beverage after a long day’s walk or cycle ride. The owners of this Elsdon cottage are keen gardeners and have their own chickens, and during your stay they will endeavour to supply you with fresh eggs and home grown vegetables in season. Fabulous walks and cycle routes are on the doorstep of this Elsdon cottage, plus just over a mile away is the historic village of Elsdon with its Pele Tower, Medieval church and the remains of a Norman Motte and Bailey castle. The village also has a bustling tea room, gallery, café and pub all serving delicious food and drink. Travel west to the delights of Kielder Water and Hadrian’s Wall or head east to the historic Heritage Coastline with its miles of golden, sandy beaches and imposing, medieval castles. This Elsdon cottage is an excellent base for discovering country living, bracing walks and touring the Northumberland countryside.
