Fabulous views, friendly & helpful owner. Excellent (very) local eggs! Some small 'refreshing' of the cottage is probably due before the new season to make it perfect. Sykes listing needs some updating, specifically the directions refer to a phone box which is no longer there and the cottage didn't have a DVD as listed.

  • "One of the most comfortable cottages we have stayed in."

If you’re taking your 4 legged friend then make sure you take bowls and beds as none are provided. When contacting the owner for key pick up make sure to get directions as quite difficult to find. Good base for the surrounding area with Matlock 15 minutes away and Chatsworth half an hour. Would book again.

  • "Lovely location, beautiful views, perfect for our dog to sit in the garden and watch the horses and cows."

Only addition would be a little more cupboard space, we are true self-catering guests and not a great deal of space for our store-cupboard food. Would recommend this cottage, overall a lovely stay.

Owners next door... there if needed but otherwise unobtrusive. Only minuses Narrow parking, steps to front door access and shower requires stepping into a high sided bath. • "My dog, Millie and I had such a lovely peaceful stay!"

I booked this last minute and it was very quick and easy. The hosts are very friendly and accommodating and I had a query before booking which was answered in no time at all. The garden was secure and a great size so my dog really enjoyed it! My dog is nervous and there is a free roaming sheep dog but we only saw her/him once and we were able to close the gate to the garden so this really wasn’t an issue. There are chickens in view too but again, these were fenced away so Millie soon got bored of trying. We had some lovely winter walks around the local area and had relaxing evenings at the cottage watching TV and reading. The only issue was a dripping/tapping noise on the last night when it was raining so I barely got any sleep! Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed it and I would recommend for those who are wanting a basic but comforting and cosy stay.

We received a lovely warm welcome from the owners on arriving. The barn was spotlessly clean, warm, comfortable and just like home from home. The scenery from the window was just amazing and so was the peace and quiet, we enjoyed lots of walks around the area. We visited Chatsworth House for the Christmas event, which was only 12 miles away. The house and gardens were fabulous and well worth a visit. We also visited Cromford Mill and Wirksworth. Both Chatsworth and Cromford were dog friendly. We would not hesitate to stay at Wigwell Barn again and our dog enjoyed it too.

About the location

ALDERWASLEY

Wirksworth 2 miles; Belper 7 miles.

Alderwasley is a scattered area of farms and a couple of local pubs located in lovely rolling countryside with undisturbed views for miles, on the southern borders of the Peak District National Park. Nearby Wirksworth is a small, charming market town on the edge of the White Peak, and is full of character, with many buildings of architectural interest, including its magnificent parish church. Visitors will enjoy exploring the ancient "jitties" and courtyards, and the National Stone Centre, as well as the delightful surrounding countryside including nearby Carsington Water and the High Peak Trail. Rock climbing and cycling can be enjoyed here at every level, and there is good walking all around. Well Dressing is unique to Derbyshire, and Wirksworth combines this tradition with a lively carnival. The annual Arts festival attracts international performers of every kind. Close to Alderwasley is Belper which is a town with a long and famous history dating back to the 13th Century, when it was then called Beaurepaire (beautiful retreat), a name that still holds true today. Now a spirited and bustling town, attractions include the North Mill, Long Row and the River Gardens. Beautiful Chatsworth House, Shottle Hall and Haddon Hall are within easy reach, as well as Matlock Bath with its spectacular cable car, the newly restored Ecclesbourne Valley Railway and Gulliver's Kingdom. Only 2 miles away, the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site in Cromford is not to be missed. A great location for a varied holiday.
