  • "Pail End didn’t disappoint, beautiful location, and the house itself was warm, dry, incredibly clean, plenty of hot water and had everything we needed for a lovely holiday."

Would 100% recommend a stay here and would not hesitate to go back. Being offered milk and biscuits on arrival was an extra bonus. Two great pubs within a few minutes walk was lovely so that you didn’t have to cook, but had all the facilities in the house if you wanted to stay in.

  • "Really enjoyed our stay at Pail End."

Lovely, cosy space with all the amenities we needed. Great location with excellent views of countryside and short walk to a very nice village pub. Very helpful pre-arrival booklet and additional instructions in cottage made our whole experience stress-free and Richard couldn't have been more helpful in keeping us informed when there was a temporary local internet outage affecting the village which was soon sorted. Many thanks indeed for a most enjoyable stay. Highly recommended.

If you’re looking for a couple’s get away with your four legged friend(s) then look no further. The cottage is clean and cosy. The shower pressure is excellent. The garden is beautiful too! You can tell this place is well cared for! The owner of this cottage is also superb. He was very accommodating to us and our situation during our stay. He went above and beyond, so we’ll be returning later this year/early next year to complete our visit to Matlock.

  • "Lovely, quiet accommodation, delightfully decorated by Richard with a beautiful view from the bedroom window."

Richard is very thorough and emails through to you detailed instructions beforehand, so you know what to expect and which we found very helpful. The Sykes ‘Travelling to the Property’ instructions are very good and accurate. From then on, we found it helpful to input “Miner’s Arms Pub, Brassington”, which virtually got us all the way there. (From previous reviews, we realised that putting the postcode into Google wouldn’t get us to Pail End.) We didn’t cook much because we were only there for three days, so for what we needed it was pretty well equipped for our needs. You will have to travel to buy food since there isn’t a shop nearby, but there are a couple of pubs close by, which we didn’t get a chance to try. There is no phone signal but you can use internet services such as WhatsApp. The internet worked well. Being on the edge of the Peaks, the area is beautiful and we had a good walk around Carsington Water and explored the area and villages nearby. It would have been good to stay longer. Definitely recommend Pail End.

We were greeted by Richard who was very accommodating. The cottage was exactly what it said on the tin, it was small, spacious, warm (!) and cosy. It is a perfectly suited cottage for 2 people. Make sure you read the leaflet prior to arriving as it contains important information (especially the detailed directions - which are necessary for your arrival, as there is not phone signal en route). Thank you Pail End!

  • "An excellent little cottage with lovely hosts."

one small niggle is that all of my gps apps (Google, Garmin, Waze etc.)have the postcode behind the property up hillside which is a very difficult to navigate and leaves you completely disoriented. If arriving at night it is impossible to see the entrance to the cottage (especially as the main picture is not what you see from the road. A more detailed description of approaching Pail End would be appreciative as it was extremely difficult to find the place. especially as there is no mobile reception to call the owners. Apart from arrival it was a lovely stay in an absolutely gorgeous part of the world

Thanks for that. Regarding the location, our postcode covers a number of lanes at this end of the village so a postcode alone is not enough. Sykes do send out detailed directions after guests book a holiday, with a description of approaching Pail End, and we also leave a light on if arrival time is after dark. Regarding signal, I provide guests in advance with my mobile number for internet-based messaging/calls (WhatsApp, Messenger). What I will do from now on, by advance email, is strongly encourage guests to take notice of the directions and not rely solely on satnav. I have also asked Sykes to emphasise this in the booking confirmation details, and also to rearrange the photos so that the main one is the road-facing view. Hopefully this will ensure that guests can find Pail End easily from now on. Property Owner

We had a lovely relaxing week here in this perfectly appointed cosy cottage, well equipped and spotlessly clean. Richard and Kathy were excellent hosts and very knowledgeable about the area. There are countless exceptional walks for all abilities within a very short distance from the cottage. a Highlight was the walk to Carsington Water and back in a circular route. Suggest downloading the 'outdoors GPS' app and follow the green dotted lines! Both pubs are very good and extremely welcoming. However my husband is six foot and I have a temporary back problem and we didn't find the very small sofa comfortable. It would also have been nice to have at least one easy chair. The dressing table was badly lit and the stool very uncomfortable, also one of the basket chairs was very small. The wooden stairs are very easy to slip on as were the mats in the bedroom. It would probably be a good idea to point out that there are steps up from the parking area and it's not really suitable for anyone with a disability and the step down into the kitchen is very high it couldd do with another one to make access easier.

It has been very tastefully converted from what I assume was a barn and is a listed building and Is small but ideal for two people and a dog. The village of Brassington is charming with stone built houses full of character and the two pubs both of which serve good food and welcome dogs. The surrounding area is beautiful with lots to see and do but if you come from an area which has few hills as I do the steep hills and hairpin bends come as a bit of a shock. Unfortunately the weather was poor for us but we enjoyed the break and can thoroughly recommend the cottage and the surrounding area.

Small, but very well desighned and equipped. I love that they don't charge for dogs at all, and we had two. I think it is a rip off in this day and age when some places claim to be dog friendly but charge up to £20 per week per dog.
