  • "The peace and tranquility of the place can't be overstated."

Need to improve the approach "road"/track though, the pot holes are vicious. Local amenities are spotty - need to pre book most places for food and it is expensive.

We would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to get away from it all, quiet with relaxing scenery all around, and just a short walk from Carsington Water - well worth a walk all around the lake and enjoy the food at the centre.

  • "We really enjoyed our stay at The Garden House."

The setting is fantastic - secluded, but not isolated with lovely views from the garden. We loved watching the wildlife in the adjacent field: not just sheep, but hares, red kites, buzzards and are almost certain - a grouse. The property was well specified with everything you could need for a pleasant stay. The location is in easy reach of the attractions in the southern Peak District, but also provides a retreat from the world if / when you want it. Mr Keck’s recommendation to try The Olde Gate pub at Brassington was spot on. Also recommend the Lathkill Hotel at Over Haddon - fantastic views while you enjoy a drink. We would happily return.

  • "We feel that the description should include that the final drive to the cottage through the trees has grass running down the middle."

Had we decided to holiday in our Caterham 7 car, there is no way we would have got to the cottage due to the low level of the car. Some issues with the doors but nothing to feel the need to complain about. A well equipped clean cottage in the most peaceful setting we have ever stayed in.

  • "The cottage as usual is outstanding."

Very peaceful and stunning views. Lots of walks and plenty to see. Three minor faults. Back door hard to unlock from the inside. Tv signal very poor kept losing picture. Bedroom found it very difficult to get round bed on one side to near the wall. There was a free standing cupboard full off Christmas decorations. If was removed would make more room to move the bed away from the wall.

  • "Hosts were friendly enough and provided info on the local area."

Plenty of leaflets and suggestions available. Considering the remoteness and lack of a shop open in the afternoons a welcome hamper such as milk, tea, coffee,, bread would have been beneficial and is the norm at the countless properties previously stayed in. The cottage itself was very nice and decorated to a high standard. Some of the TV stations had interference but access to netflix was a nice compensation. Listing refered to a DVD player but i dont think there was one. The bed very comfortable with decent quality bedding that felt nice and soft. Access was not great on the far side yet more room could be provided if the cupboard which is just used for Christmas decor be removed as this would allow for the bed to be pulled out a little more from the wall. Basic facilities like a hairdryer missing which are pretty standard in 5 star rated cottages. Would advise attention to the doors as stiff locks problematic especially the door leading from the lounge to the patio / airer area. One of the best locations we have stayed in for walking and beautiful scenery. Plenty to do and see, would highly recommend the area.

The sheep in the neighbouring field are a quiet bunch and don't disturb you, the farm cat and dog came to visit and are very friendly. Within the property there is everything that you could possibly need for your stay, plenty of lovely towns with great walks and tea rooms all within 30 minutes by car. Mr Keck is friendly and welcoming and has good knowledge on the local area so he will happily show recommendations for walks, and pubs. Very clean inside, beautifully decorated and welcoming. Really enjoyed our stay and will be back again. Thank you.

Meant to be animal free property. We are both allergic to cats and there should be a warning that the owners cats jump in the window, doors. Found quite a few cats hairs in the property. Good job I took my inhaler as it was needed a few evenings. Black mould around kitchen sink, TV issues as could not not get anything but Netflix. Rear outside light also didn't work.

  • "We booked this cottage near Kirk Ireton as soon as 12th April was named as the date restrictions on self-catering holidays would be lifted, so that we could at least meet our new grandson in his parents' garden in Derby!"

The cottage is in beautiful surroundings and was exactly as described, although the glass tables in the photos have now been replaced with scubbed pine. Given the restrictions, we self-catered every day and the kitchen made this a pleasure - plenty of space and well equipped. We did not use the dishwasher or washing machine. Hot water was piping hot. The bed being close to the wall is, in reality, only an issue for about two minutes per day, i.e. when you are getting in and out of bed! However, we are both slim - it might be more problematic for others. This property is a long way from the nearest main road so is very peaceful and this, combined with the very comfortable bed, meant that we slept well. The broadband signal was very good and we were able to watch TV live on-line with none of the buffering we experience at home. Beautifully furnished throughout with some interesting art on the wall, ceramics in the display cabinets and other nice pieces dotted around. The owner was very helpful in giving us permission to cross his fields straight onto the Carsington Water Circuit path. Only critisism would be the strength of lighting in the kitchen and the sitting room could do with a proper reading light placed behind the sofa. We enjoyed our stay at Garden House and would definitely consider returning. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Beautiful cottage perfect for a restful getaway and an ideal location for day trips out to the local villages, attractions & nearby cities of Nottingham, Chesterfield and Derby. The cottage itself is absolutely immaculate with everything we wanted for our holiday break, from the big comfy bed to the lovely log fire. Although we cooked our evening meals at the cottage on most evenings, the french restaurant in Wirksworth was well worth the trip out. We have loved the views out over the fields every day & we are now planning our second visit to Garden House next year. Thanks to Mr & Mrs Keck.

The house was easy to find and well signposted along an unmade track. The cottage is in it's own plot and although shares the drive with another property was not overlooked at all. The views are amazing and we were very lucky with the weather which meant we could enjoy the lovely autumn colours. The cottage is very well equipped with everything you needed for self-catering - it is also tastefully decorated which makes it feel more like home than a holiday cottage. We were very close to Carsington Water and enjoyed the walks and wildlife there - although the Visitor Centre was very busy on the Sunday due to half-term - we took sandwiches and coffee to avoid the queues. Close to Chatsworth, Buxton and Dovedale and worth the drive to Calke Abbey for a visit to an un-stately home. Would definitely recommend this holiday cottage and would visit again.

  • "The bottle of wine on arrival was a nice touch, and the cottage was generally very comfortable, but there are a small number of practical issues which need to be attended to to make future visitors feel more comfortable and welcome; such as:- 1."

The installation of a central thermostat for the heating would be welcome because the radiator in the bedroom could not be switched off. Therefore it was too hot for comfort. 2. There are plenty of notices to say what to avoid doing, but no instructions on how to use the cooker, TV etc. 3. The step from the kitchen into the lounge needs to marked by some tape other means. Having said that we had a really good week exploring the local area and the cottage was an ideal base.

  • "Lovely rural setting, peaceful and quiet."

The drive leading upto the house was full of pot holes so had to drive very slowly. We did not have control of the heating as the boiler was locked up and there was no room thermostat to control the heating. This resulted in being too hot at times due to the nice weather we had. It would have been a better experience if we had control over this facility. The bed was very very comfortable but could only access the bed from one side so I feel the older generation would find this a challenge getting in and out of bed more so the person who sleeps near to the wall. Lots of signs around the property one of which asking us to use the correct dishwasher tablets but no information on what dishwasher tablets to use so we didn’t bother using it. I think there should have been a book explaining how things worked e.g TV, cooker, microwave etc. There was only one cereal bowl too which my husband and I had to share. We did have a lovely holiday though and the owners kept themselves to themselves and gave us privacy.

  • "The Garden House is in a beautiful location although the drive to it is full of potholes which have been filled in with stones."

Once negotiated, every thing is great. The views are splendid and the only noisy neighbours are a few sheep in the next field. Beware the cunning cat (George) and dog (Dottie). They leave George outside and when you go out to play/pet him, Dottie rushes inside, puts a paw on the pedal bin, and in goes her head to grab whatever is there. Apparently they share the spoils. We had just emptied ours when they pulled this trick, so they were not best pleased with us. The outside bins have heavy rocks on top to stop them robbing them as well. The bed in enormous and I had to climb over my husband to get in my side. Once in I was so comfortable and cosy I slept as well as at home. The shower is wonderful once you've worked out the control and my husband had a bath most nights. We will be booking again in the future.
