The owners had thought of everything! Very comfortable & very well equipped. Location was perfect as its right in the centre of Castleton within easy reach of all pubs, cafes etc. Haven't been to this area before but will definitely be back. We visited Bakewell, Buxton, Longshaw Country Estate with lots of walks to pick from. We'll return to this cottage & will recommend. Thank you for the welcome pack too

  • "Excellent location, very convenient for walks and all the facilities in Castleton."

We struggled at first to operate the hob (it defaults to 'locked') and some of the cleaning wasn't great e.g dining table had not been wiped, dust on some surfaces in the bathroom, several kitchen items had to be washed before we could use them. That said, the cottage is comfortable and well equipped, and communication with the owner's daughter was excellent.

Hello Paula, thank you very much for your feedback regarding Eastry Cottage. We are pleased to hear that you found communication good between us, as the owners and yourselves. It is also great to hear that you enjoyed your visit to Castleton and found that our cottage was in a good location. Sorry that you found areas of cleaning in the bathroom below standard. We have just had the bathroom tiled. Hope to see you again in the near future. Property Owner

Hello, thank you for taking the time to leave us feedback for our self-catering property Eastry Cottage. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay in Castleton. As a family we have been letting our property since 1995, we have always advertised that we have a room with two single beds and a room with a double bed. Our small terraced property is over 300 years old and would not have the space to accommodate larger furniture. Property Owner

  • "We very much enjoyed our stay at Eastry Cottage."

The location is excellent with about half a dozen pubs in a 5 minute walk and for 3 days we were able to go on hikes straight from the front door. The house is very homely with comfortable sofas for an evening in. The kitchen could do with a large frying pan and one or two larger saucepans for cooking. What is there is all a little small so cooking a meal for 4 is not as easy as it might be. Overall we thought is was a really nice place to stay and would recommend it as an excellent base for exploring the Peak District.

  • "We had a lovely holiday in Castleton."

The cottage is beautiful and well equipped. It had everything we needed for a comfortable evening after a day out walking. We particularly liked some of the artwork, including some striking prints. The location of the cottage is perfect, right in the middle of Castleton and next to the well known Cave Dale, so as well as longer walks we did the little two mile circuit of walking up Cave Dale and back round to the village several times in the week. The one piece of advice I'd give is about eating out. If you prefer not to cook each night and want to eat out in Castleton it might be a good idea to plan this ahead of your holiday and book tables accordingly. We found this difficult with many places fully booked. If this happens, we recommend the takeaway pizzas from 1530, and one day we had excellent fish and chips, though this had to be lunchtime as the fish and chip shop isn't open in the evening. Altogether I wholeheartedly recommend this cottage.

Loved the rear deck/platform and also appreciated the high standard of bed, mattress and settees and that everything we needed in the kitchen was there. Only personal negative is that I would have preferred not to have such a large amount of air fresheners in the property. I ended up putting them all away in a cupboard, and they really weren’t needed. We had a lovely break, very relaxed, and would love to return.

  • "We have stayed at Eastry before and had a lovely stay, but this time around the shower was broken and at 6`5" tall a standard bath is next to useless."

On arrival the house was clean but the kitchen utensils and general kitchen cupboard items where dirty, all needed fully washing taking up the first few hours of the stay.

The shower had regrettably been broken prior to your arrival and we could not resolve it in time for your stay but did let you know and apologised in advance. The bath is indeed a standard size and we're sorry if this was not suitable for you and of course we would not have known that at the time when advising you that the shower was broken which unfortunately this was outside our control. Sykes also send out a contact number pre arrival to guests if they need to raise any concerns and they also have a dedicated phone line for guests staying at a property. The property was thoroughly cleaned before your arrival and we take pride in the cleanliness, as can be seen from the many positive reviews we receive. We're sorry that you didn't contact Sykes at the time with any concerns for us to be able to discuss this with you at the time. Sykes also sent you an email inviting you to discuss your feedback further with them and also left a voicemail recently asking you to call them, regrettably you have still not responded. • "We loved Castleton and especially enjoyed our hike."

Eastry Cottage is located right near the entrance to Cave Dale, a ravine/dale often a part of mapped walks. The hike up was lovely and a little challenging for us. One caution is make sure you know your route well before heading out and take along a good map that marks the terrain. Paths are well trodden, but not well marked. In December the weather was not too cold, but damp with rain possible for some part of every day - plan for that. Good waterproof hiking boots are a must, as you will be walking on rocky, wet paths. Eastry Cottage was lovely, but not fancy - which was OK with us. We had planned to cook more, but found the availability of groceries limited. Fortunately there were many excellent dining options in Castleton. The host provided some lovely Christmas decorations and fresh flowers on the dining table - we really appreciated that as our visit was near Christmas. There were eggs and milk awaiting us in the refrigerator and served as our breakfast the first morning. The kitchen provided the basics as far as pots, pans, dishes, utensils and included 2 kitchen towels, dish soap, salt and pepper, instant coffee, tea bags. We did not find the extra silverware and dishes until we were leaving. Look for that next to the dining table. We were thankful for the washing machine - as we got very muddy in our hikes. We arrived by public transport (train to Hope Valley and bus to Castleton) and managed without a car, but I got the sense that most vacationers in the village did have cars.

  • "We had a great week in Eastry Cottage, a real rest which is just what we needed."

When I walked through the door I thought, 'I could live here', which I rarely feel with holiday lets, and I got a real sense that Rebecca and her mum genuinely care about their guests and do what they can to help. The downstairs room is spacious and comfortable, the kitchen small but adequate, and the bedrooms again comfortable (we stayed in the twin rooms and the beds were too hard for us but I notice in another review another guest appreciated this so it's a matter of taste!). The house was warm and welcoming and while the decoration is a bit dated we really felt at home and that we could switch off and enjoy the area. I will recommend to friends. Thank you.
