  • "Well appointed holiday cottage in a beautiful rural setting within easy walking distance to the excellent pubs in Ashover."

    Reviewed by Ian5.0Dec 2023

  • "We were visiting family in Chesterfield and the cottage was a convenient location for us."

Ashover is a very pretty village. The property is furnished to a high standard with all the equipment you need for a comfortable stay. Contact with the owner was by phone and she was very pleasant.

  • "The location was good, the cottage was cosy and bedrooms comfortable."

Setting was beautiful and it was a good base to explore the area. However there were a few things which we feel need addressing. Directions were inaccurate and all of us struggled to find the entrance to the Tack Room. We selected the property as it was stated that it was a ten minute walk to the local pubs. This walk along the roads would have taken a lot longer and in places on the country lane there was no pavement or lighting. Maybe it takes that time a walk across the fields but this isn’t an option at night. A sensory light would be useful on the steps to the property as it was dark and slippery in the rain. The living room has no windows and was disappointingly dark. The small step to the kitchen is a hazard and one of our group had a nasty fall. We expect to find kitchen basics such as salt and pepper, oil, tea, coffee, foil, cling film- none of these were provided 9.30am check out we thought was a little early especially when we were expected to strip beds, empty bins and dishwasher. The guests in the other cottage were also unhappy about the check out time

  • "Well appointed in terms of decor but the living room was very dark and the kitchen table simply too big for the kitchen."

Fortunately there were only four of us so we could squeeze in. Garden delightfully located, surrounded by mature trees. Given the darkness of the living room we spent much of our time at the cottage in the garden. As a base to explore the Peak District it is very good. Bit disappointed that the central heating proved to be difficult to control and the dishwasher was out of commission for the whole week.

Thank you for your feedback and I am pleased that you had an enjoyable stay. The dishwasher was brand new for your stay, but unfortunately, when it was fitted and tested, a fault was found and we had to wait for another replacement dishwasher to arrive which we appreciate impacted on your stay for which we apologise. Well equipped kitchen and comfortable sofas in the living room. The cottage was generally clean but it could of have a little extra attention in the main bathroom, large cobwebs on the ceiling and the small mirror needed a clean, it would be nice to have a larger mirror in the main bathroom.

All in all comfortable and spacious accommodation. The main bedroom very large and the additional day bed in there was ideal as my young granddaughter could stay in the same room as her parents and they all had plenty of space. The living area is rather dark and would benefit from some additional illumination, otherwise a great property for a family holiday.

  • "We had a great week at the Tack Room."

The place was spotless and had every home comfort we needed. A lovely welcome pack on arrival made settling in easy. The beds were very comfy, rooms felt spacious and furnishings were modern and well looked after. The village had a lovely pub and was quiet and quaint, lovely for an evening stroll. The cottage is in a great location for lots of the main tourist attractions. The owners very friendly, on hand but didn’t interfere just as we like it. The garden was nice and secluded. Although there is another cottage on site we hardly saw the other tenants and were not disturbed by their being around. My one criticism would be the amount of natural light in the downstairs. Had the weather been more sunny I would have felt we had missed out as there is very little natural light in the lounge area. This was mentioned in other reviews. Whilst it didn’t ruin the holiday it did make being indoors a slightly less enjoyable experience. However, other aspects of the cottage and location made up for it.

There are no windows in the lounge, other than the glass in the entrance door, which does not really matter as this give the room a cosy feel howver, the lights could do with being brighter should the occupant wish have a lighter room. The master bedroom has a low ceiling and an even lower beam running the length of the room. Some occupants may find this difficult to cope with when moving around, particularly at night!

Short walking distance to local pubs and shop. Did a few local walks and ventured out to Ladybower Reservoir, Carsington Water and Dovedale Country Park for longer walks - all stunning and made even better with the glorious weather we had in April. Made the most of 'car park' pub dining in Ashover and enjoyed good pub food and service at all the eateries. Lesley (owner) and her parents, who live next door made us very welcome and the goodies in the kitchen on our arrival were well received! A lovely break all round! thank you!

It is a absolutely stunning area, and the cottage and surrounding cottages are gorgeous too. The beds and sofas are very good quality, and comfortable, as 2 of our party suffer from bad backs, and for once we were both happy with both!! It’s lovely and warm and cozy too, the only downside in our eyes, was the lounge was very dark, as it could be night or day in there with the darkness, it just lacked a window. But it certainly didn’t spoil our lovely relaxing time away. All the bathrooms and showers were fabulous and spacious and the kitchen had everything we needed. We cooked in every evening too, with the COVID-19 situation, and we managed perfectly. We enjoyed a few pints of ale in the Crispin Inn. Very friendly for us and our 2 dogs

  • "The Tack Room Cottage is a beautifully re-furbished out-building in an idyllic farmstead setting, in a small complex of stone buildings, courtyards and gardens, with an elegant small 'manor farmhouse' at its heart."

The whole is surrounded by pastures and woodland belonging to the property, allowing a fair bit of walking whilst hardly leaving the grounds. This includes seven minutes to your very own 'Farm Shop and Cafe', extremely friendly and well-stocked with self-catering treats, liquid and otherwise, and a perfect place for 'brunch' made largely of home grown or very local fresh food. The local area, just outside the Peak District National Park, is classic, English countryside: deep valleys with woods and running streams, high moorland, unspoilt villages clustered round their churches and traditional pubs. If you want peace and quiet, you've got it! If you like a heritage site to visit, Chatsworth is unmissable: both the house and the gardens are worth every penny and every minute of a few hours at a time. We went twice, once for the gardens (with grandchildren) and once for the house (by ourselves). Coming back to the cottage itself, it can cope well enough with two couples and two children, accommodation-wise, though the kitchen - and especially the fridge - did struggle for space a bit (we arrived in a heatwave!) The only other thing we would have different (in an ideal world) is more daylight in the main living room - just one window to see out of would be nice. On the odd rainy day, being cooped up in the house felt a little claustrophobic. This was apparent from an earlier review, so we were happy to accept it as it was and not let it spoil the holiday. When the sun was shining, we used the small, pretty back lawn for meals and drinks. The outside table and chairs there were fine but there was nothing to lounge on, so bring your own loungers or a rug, if that's what you like! The owner, Lesley, was fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble. We were left to our own devices unless we asked for something - such as re-booting the wi-fi router, which there was quite a need of for a day or two. There were plans to address that, so it may no longer be an issue; and it worked well anyway, with good bandwidth, most of the time. We went away with a couple of bags of lovely fresh vegetables from the next door garden, too - very generous and very tasty! To cap all that, we left something quite precious behind (it had slipped under a wardrobe) and Lesley followed up on it assiduously. The cleaners found it, on looking again, and it was posted back to us without charge. You could not wish for warmer or better organised hospitality!

I rang Sykes to confirm that this was the case and was told that, yes, the garden was enclosed When I arrived at the Tack Room I realised the garden wasn't enclosed at all The representative I spoke to at Sykes clearly had no idea about the real facilities at the property and was only reading the description of the property as I had done. I feel Sykes should check that the facts advertised in the property description are correct otherwise all other property descriptions will be taken with a pinch of salt and in my case will prevent me from using Sykes again

  • "The cottage was very clean and well presented as described."

The two double bedrooms are spacious and very comfortable, the single room (which has an extra pull out single bed underneath) served our needs very well. A hand rail to assist with the first few steps leading down to the cottage from the car park would be helpful but this did not detract from our stay. Both Lesley (the owner) and her parents who we met, were very helpful with local advice and ensuring our stay at the cottage went as smoothly as possible. Convenient for Ashover which has a number of good pubs and for the wider South East Derbyshire area. If visiting the area again this cottage would be top of our list.

The stable block has been converted and is idyllically-placed on the edge of the small village of Ashover, five miles from the popular tourist town of Matlock. Situated in the hall’s grounds, along with the owner’s property, the two semi-detached properties have been meticulously renovated to a beautiful standard throughout. The sitting rooms are comfortable and spacious with wood grain flooring, leather sofas and tasteful furnishings. Both properties offer contemporary bathrooms with an en-suite, a separate family bathroom and an additional ground floor cloakroom. With ample off road parking and private gardens showcasing views over open, private parkland and countryside, the properties provide excellent holiday homes with all modern comforts. A short stroll brings you to the four local inns and village shops, whilst golfers can enjoy a round on the 9-hole course in nearby Stonedge or on the Matlock golf courses. Ashover is one of the country’s largest parishes and has an extensive footpath network, with all routes coming back to the village. The surrounding area is wonderful for walking and cycling, or touring the pretty market towns and popular tourist attractions. Nearby Matlock, with its warm springs, offers interesting, independent shops, restaurants and tempting tea rooms, with Leys Hall Park providing a lovely setting for recreational activities such as bowls, tennis and boating. Chatsworth House and gardens are about 20 minutes’ drive away and Hardwick Hall and Haddon Hall are also both well worth a trip. With Crich Tramway Museum and Matlock Bath close by, there's a wealth of activities for all. For birdwatchers and nature lovers, you can enjoy taking a walk around Carsington Water along well defined paths. Both lovely properties really do sit in a delightful area of Derbyshire.
