The hamlet of Monsal Head is situated in a wonderful position right at the heart of the Peak District National Park. There are spectacular views in all directions; to the west over the beautiful Monsal Dale with its viaduct (one of the most photographed vistas in the National Park), to the east along Longstone Edge and south towards Bakewell and beyond. There are walks in all directions and The Monsal Trail provides eight and a half miles of traffic-free cycling right on your doorstep. There are two pubs and a restaurant within a quarter of a mile and just down the road lies the picture postcard village of Ashford-in-the-Water. This historic village, once famous for its marble, consists of 18th century stone cottages, two lovely pubs, an award-winning general store and a cafe. The medieval Sheepwash Bridge was once a major crossing point over the River Wye for packhorses delivering mail from Derby and is flanked by a former sheep washing pen. Ashford Cricket Ground is a perfect spot to spend an afternoon supporting the local team, while Ashford Orchard provides an ideal children's play area. The nearby, renowned market town of Bakewell offers a variety of shops, restaurants and pubs, together with frequent local farmers' markets. Visit the many stately homes including Chatsworth, Haddon Hall and Hardwick Hall, or take a trip to the World Heritage Site of the Richard Arkwright Mills in Cromford, all of which is within easy reach. With Britain's premier theme park, Alton Towers and the impressive caverns at Castleton close by, you'll be spoilt for choice at this fantastic location!
