  • "Wonderful cottage and welcoming hosts, very informative."

The most perfect cottage for a relaxing week away. Felt very cosy and homely. Very clean and tidy, couldn’t fault anything. Actually didn’t want to leave, so will be booking to return again shortly. The setting was perfect, and the field for the dogs was an added bonus. Will be back soon Would definitely recommend this cottage.

Very friendly host who did not bother us all week after our first introduction. Without any doubt, if we were to return to this part of the country, again, we would have no hesitation whatsoever in using this very same cottage. Would highly recommend this to anyone looking for clean simple accommodation to use as the base. We will definitely rate this property five stars

The field at the back was a real treat for the dogs. I hadn't checked for facilities such as washing machine, dryer etc - I guess we assume that everywhere provides them. No great problem for a short stay though. All in all, a comfortable and restful stay.

We loved having the open view and the dogs loved being able to go out into the field. Very convenient. The owners were friendly and had thought of everything for our comfort. We found lots of dog friendly walks (no sheep) and great vegan food at local pubs and cafes. We particularly liked The George at Tideswell, The Old Sun Inn Buxton, High Nelly's Cafe for bfast in Tideswell, Yondermann's cafe by Cressbrook Dale. The Roost Cafe in Tideswell, Three Roofs Cafe in Castleton, La Gaby pizzeria in Buxton - dogs welcome.

  • "What a wonderful few days we spent in this idyllic cottage."

Jane and John were so welcoming and we so enjoyed our first trip to this part of the country. Extremely dog friendly with a lovely paddock over the garden wall which was enclosed so dogs could happily play and run to their hearts’ content. I personally think that the negative feedback on the sofa and the size of the TV is far too “picky” but, hey, each to his own. I highly recommend this cottage and we will certainly be booking another visit

  • "The cottage is lovely and the paddock to the rear was a fantastic addition for our two Irish Wolfhounds, especially as a lot of the places we visited either had a lot of sheep, so the dogs were on leads most of the time, or stiles, which our dogs can't do."

The garden was stone covered. It wasn't a problem for us and the views were fantastic. The road noise was a downside, but it wasn't an issue as long as we kept the bedroom windows closed. I would however request better cooking knives! With two big dogs, we cater at the cottage most nights wherever we go and the knives were dreadful. I know it sounds picky but they were blunt and cut at an odd angle - I swore a lot! Just one good, sharp knife would be fine.

  • "From the Sykes pictures the seating was plush red velvet and looked comfortable."

In reality the sofa and chair were a faded green and most uncomfortable. I've had better furniture from Age Concern! The heating hadn't been on and the place was musty and damp and the thermostat was showing 10degrees centigrade only.. I know the weather was poor but I didn't expect damp to be coming in from the French doors. Upstairs also smelt musty and our clothes got damp. We left earliet than planned as a result. I can recommend the location but, sadly, not the property. I have used Sykes before and the properties were fine, but this was poor. Sykes need to do better

Missed in the advert that the cottage did not have a washing machine. Parking was under some trees that covered the car with sap each night, meaning a couple of trips to the jet wash! Otherwise the cottage was quite homely and fairly priced. Would really benefit from a log burner for a winter stay.

  • "A lovely compact cottage with amazing views!"

(which strangely were not included in the property photos?) We would have liked to have it pointed out to us the proximity of the main road. It is also pretty unusual not to have WiFi these days. And a small fridge freezer would have been very handy! One single bed was very squeaky which meant our son kept waking up. Otherwise a lovely place! And very dog-friendly.

However, it is a “ tired” cottage, with a saggy sofa and chair in the sitting room.It had no wifi which was my fault for not checking, and poor phone signal on our network(3). The kitchen has no dishwasher( not a great problem) and no freezer, which was more of a problem.Again I should have checked. The tv is small and as we are both close to 70, we struggled to watch it.The bathroom was fine, shower excellent. The bedroom was adequate but only a normal sized double...again, I need to check these details next time I book one!We had a lovely time despite these negatives!

Very idyllic surroundings. The garden was full of daffodils and the view beyond was such an amazingly peaceful panorama of fields gently lilting up to hills in the distance. In the view from the sitting room there were no roads to be seen.Truly peaceful. I loved sitting and looking at this view. First thing in the morning there was a distinct sound of sheep which was so lovely as they were quite a distance away. From staying here we were able to visit a few highspots in the Peak District and absolutely loved Poole's Cavern.

The cottage was ideally located and a very comfortable base. Being able to let our dog out in a safe place was a real bonus. From the back we had stunning views. But as the cottage was on the main road, there is naturally going to be some road noise. But it did not detract us from having a great break.

Stunning uninterrupted far reaching view from The Cottage. Spiral stairs have a fixed gate at the bottom which was good to stop the dogs going upstairs. Also plenty of room to put a dog bed/crate in the living room. A real bonus was the field at the bottom of the garden which were allowed to exercise the dogs in. • "This is a lovely cosy little cottage which is good value for money."

It is in a good location as a base for the Peak District (as long as you don't mind getting in the car). Very dog friendly, it was spacious and comfortable for my Husband, myself and our two dogs. There is a large field that can be used but this may be occupied by sheep as times. What possibly let it down slightly was the shower, not very powerful and the head height could not be adjusted and the double bed was creaky and uncomfortable (also seemed smaller than a normal double). However, we understand that the more luxury the facilities, the more the price goes up! One improvement I would suggest for the owners would be to provide more local information in the cottage about nearest shops/supermarket, dog friendly pubs etc. As phone signal is poor and there is no wifi this would be most useful.

About the location

PEAK FOREST

Tideswell 4 miles; Chapel-en-le-Frith 4 miles; Buxton 4 miles.

The ancient and peaceful village of Peak Forest is situated in the heart of the Peak District National Park, boasting an excellent pub, which serves good food. The village is named for the Royal Forest of the Peak, which was an open area used as a royal hunting park rather than a forested area. Peak Forest has a church, which was founded in 1657 by the Countess of Devonshire and until the 18th century, its vicar had considerable freedom in conducting marriage ceremonies, hence Peak Forest became Derbyshire’s Gretna Green. Eldon Hole, one of the seven wonders of the Peak, is surrounded by superb walking country. Nearby are the pretty villages of Edale, the start of the Pennine Way, Castleton, with four spectacular caverns to visit, the ‘plague’ village of Eyam, and Tideswell, where the church is regarded as the cathedral of the Peak. Horse riding, cycling and swimming at the open-air pool in Hathersage and the wonderful Castleton Caves are all available within 7 miles. Enjoy a day out at Alton Towers or visit the impressive Chatsworth House estate, Haddon Hall, or the house and glorious gardens at Lyme Park, all within easy reach.
