  • "This was our first stay at Galena Cottage and very unlikely to be our last!"

We were surprised by how big and spacious it was inside whilst retaining its period features. The property was full of character and its in a beautiful village within the Peak District with superb walks for the dogs straight from the door and some great views. The house was very well equipped with possibly as well equipped kitchen as we have experienced and lovely touches throughout the house. Very dog friendly with dog beds provided, numerous water bowls and a large enclosed garden for them to run around in. We would certainly recommend Galena cottage for a relaxing week!

  • "Excellent property in a lovely location."

Thank you for the welcome pack. Excellent amount of literature regarding the local area and great range of games and puzzles. The radiator in the kitchen needs to be looked at as we were unable to get it to work and that was the only heating in that room. Some additional draft excluding on the kitchen door would also be beneficial.

We received a comprehensive welcome pack, which was very thoughtful. There is plenty of space inside and out. The location is really good, and there are plenty of walks and attractions within a short drive. Tideswell has a Co-op and a good fish and chip shop which is very cheap. ( Be prepared for a wait, as they cook to order and it is popular at the weekend) The Yonderman cafe , just down the road is also well worth a visit. All in all, Galena Cottage is highly recommended, we will definitely return.

We were absolutely thrilled with the overall exterior and interior. The cottage was so comfortable and had all the essentials and amenities that we needed for a wonderful week stay. We have two doggies and they loved the inclosed back garden and believe me so did we. I would inform prior visitors to ensure they pick up their doggie poop so other visitors don’t have to, like we did. Anyway, wonderful stay and we would like to thank the owners greatly. We will certainly be visiting again! Thank you.

The outdoor space is perfect for dogs and the owners make them feel very welcome with beds and treats. 3 bathrooms and a downstairs toilets support privacy and the walks are amazing. You can walk to the pub in Litton (Red Lion) we had Sunday lunch there. We did then continue our walk to Tideswell where there was a festival on. Great weather really helped, but we were unable to make use of wood burners which means we may return. I recommend whole heartedly.

  • "Galena is a lovely old cottage in beautiful rural surroundings, very well modernised, with three huge and comfortable beds in the two en suite bedrooms and third bedroom with bathroom two steps away."

It's secret extra ingredient is in the micro details the owners have deployed - almost every little nice-to-have extra thing you wish you had in other good cottages is actually already in place in Galena. This ranges from kit to make young kids comfy to kit for your dogs, and adult tools. For example really good kitchen equipment, from a range of good oven trays and saucepans, kitchen knives that are actually sharp, a coffee pod machine, right down to small wooden tongs with which to pick toast out of the toaster and little plastic bag clips. Throw in an efficient log burner, with a good supply of logs to make the living room toasty, and it's a real home from home. The views from the kitchen and bedrooms are spectacular green vistas of fields, farms, dry stone walls and distant hills, while the cottage is surrounded by amazing Peak District heights, view points, roadside rivers and plunging valleys. There's no shortage of good pubs and cafes within a very few minutes' drive. But what I enjoyed most in our stay at the end of March was the magnificent tree blossoming right outside the back kitchen window, full of songbirds from blackbirds to so many beautiful little blue tits, goldfinches and others, filling the air with their music. ...and the sheep! You can't miss the sheep grazing peacefully on the slope just above the kitchen window, a few feet behind the cottage's dry stone garden wall, as you graze on your own breakfast. My wife and I and two other couples of very old friends have been hiring lovely cottages together for an annual break for about 15 years, not to mention family holidays, so have plenty of experience. We all agreed Galena Cottage was one of the very best.

  • "This is a great property & very large."

Very comfortable with lovely beds & furniture. Little extras nice touch. But, it’s always the little things. It said in listing kindling for one fire was provided, but it wasn’t! And only logs for one fire were provided not logs for coal fire and log burner. I would have got some if I’d known, rather than not be able to have a fire. It said in listing dog treats were there, but they were not. The tin opener does not work, not to be able to open tins was a major issue! There were loads of saucepans but no steamer. I think it would be a good idea for property owners stayed in the property for a week, to see exactly what one would need.

The no-reply format is not helpful. You asked me a while ago who would be staying in our cottage and I was unable to list everyone as we had 2 different groups staying for 3 nights each. There was no facility to let you know about that. You have already asked me who is coming on future booked holidays but the answer is "I don't know yet". I book well in advance and only ask friends nearer the time. Ask me a week before we go. In general Sykes Cottages sends far too many emails. They provided information about local pubs, restaurants and cafes and these were all excellent. The cottage itself is immaculately clean throughout. The fixtures and furnishings are all of a very high standard. The accommodation is such that we were able to spread ourselves across two lounges. This enabled quiet conversations with friends in the small snug area and we all used the the many games provided in the other lounge. The location is spectacular with views across the peaks. ..., the snug,a new carpet! -the beds are comfortable enough but, as you would expect the floorboards creak a lot due to the age of the property. The cottage is homely and the village is great for walks, can recommend the Yondermans cafe at the bottom of the hill. Bakewell,Tideswell and Eyam were great places to visit -all in all a great Christmas break.

Thank you for your feedback. The owners are always looking to improve the quality of the cottage and to enhance the experience of their guests. As the cottage had a refurbishment only 4 weeks before you arrived, we were surprised to read some of the content. We agree and are sorry that the carpet in the snug was not perfect, this was due to the owner not being able to replace the carpet in time for your stay as this was damaged previously just before your stay. A new carpet is on order and will be replaced as soon as possible. We feel that the snug and lounge is warm and cosy with plenty of fresh soft furnishings. The cottage is super dog friendly and the owners are extremely helpful and responsive. When we arrived on a cold wet late afternoon the heating had been turned on and it was cosy warm and very inviting. Having a washing machine and dryer was very useful for muddy clothes after a day out in the hills. The kitchen is extremely well equipped, but it is walking distance to the yondermann cafe at the end of the road if you dont want to cook breakfast. The only comment I would make is the steps to the garden perhaps need rethinking. They are deep and steep and very slippery. Ideally they could be changed to provide more steps on a slower slope so that they are more child/elderly friendly. But if you have very young children you need to watch them on the steps. Other than that, its an amazing place and I would go back definitely.

  • "Galena Cottage is full of character and is a quality holiday letting."

Fixtures and fittings are first rate in a cottage that has been adapted and updated for holiday hire. In addition to the stunning Peak District scenery, there is a lot to do in the local area based on Wardlow; and there is excellent signposting to local attractions and activities in the landlords 'welcome pack' that is e-mailed 2-4 weeks before arrival and supplemented by many flyers in the cottage. There are numerous excellent hostelries within 15-20 minutes driving but the The Stags Heads that is within walking distance comes with 'health warnings' from other local: "the landlord is eccentric and taciturn, make sure you shut the door, they don't 'do' mobile phones and don't ask for lager". We didn't experience any of this because the pub was not open at either lunch time or early evening (1900) on a Thursday, or perhaps they saw us coming and locked the door. Since returning home I've found on the Good Pub Guide, "only open Fri evening and all day weekends". Finally, if you don't love the cottage and enjoy the local area you will be in a very small minority.

This cottage was homely, exceptionally clean and very comfortable. We were a party of two couples and two singles and this cottage was just perfect for us. the couples had the rooms with ensuite and the singles the large family bathroom. There was so much space that we didn't actually use the snug. The standard of everything was top rate from the bed linen and towels to the cookware and crockery. I can't tell you how pleased we all were to see plenty of large mugs, in fact there was plenty of everything . The welcome pack and toiletries were another nice touch. we were still finding other nice touches on the day we left, there is nothing more we could wish for. We go on this type of holiday every year , the girls go walking/shopping and the boys cycle.( we are all the wrong side of 60, 70 and one 80) We found plenty to do , nice pubs close by , The Anchor in get to top award from us. The cottage has set a very high bench mark for us. We like to try new places but we have all said we would like to return here, maybe have a winter break.

  • "Would happily return to this property if we wanted to holiday in Derbyshire again."

3 couples fitted very easily - plenty of washroom facilities and seating. 'Snug' very useful as an addition to the lounge space. We had to make a request for detailed information and arrival arrangements which should have been sent earlier but when they came they were very full and helpful. Property had been properly described in the publicity literature and met all our expectations (which were high). The location was perfect for exploring some of the delightful Derbyshire villages nearby - well-dressing villages in particular. Literature did refer to internal steps but this is something elderly or less mobile visitors will need to be aware of. Care is needed both inside and to access the back door. Owners were delightful and very helpful in sorting out a problem with the TV.

  • "There are a lot of steps inside the cottage, to get into any room you either have to go up or down anywhere between 1-3 steps, I feel that this may be awkward for somebody who is not very mobile."

Having said this the cottage details state that there are steps inside the cottage. Galena is a lovely cottage and we would not hesitate to renting this cottage in the future. Galena cottage is situated in a rural location and not very far from all local attractions.

  • "A great cottage for 3 couples to stay at as all the beds are large and very comfortable with their own bathrooms (2 en suite)."

Very well positioned to visit both white and dark peak areas. Cressbrookdale is a great walk from the front door and was filled with flowers - both orchids and cowslips.

  • "Galena Cottage was perfect for our stay."

It was tastefully decorated and they have put a lot of thought and effort in to the cottage as there was everything you could possibly need. 3 good sized bedrooms- 2 ensuite which left the main bathroom to be used by the other bedroom. Downstairs toilet and utility. Having 2 rooms was perfect as it meant we were not all on top of each other and had our own space. Location was excellent- walks from the door and a short ride in the car from Bakewell. Would definitely stay again

  • "I was at the cottage for 3 nights, it was my hen do with my oldest and dearest friends as I'm getting married this week."

It was beautifully furnished and had plenty of room for 6 of us and 2 dogs. I loved the little touches- dog bowls, collars and treats for our pets, wine , bread and milk for the adults. The kitchen was well equipped as were the bathrooms. The views surrounding the house were spectacular. It's ideally located to Monsal Head were we went walking. I would love to come back at some stage. Thank you for a great memorable hen do.

Beds and sofas were super and comfortable and kitchen pretty and welcoming. The location was good for us, we were looking for good walks and were spoilt for choice, it was very helpful having OS maps of the area on the walls. The owners had thought of and provided everything we and the dog might need. Thank you for a wonderful week. PS I stupidly left a dressing gown* on the back of our bedroom door, ( the room was called Topley Pike) Please could you ask the housekeeper / cleaner whether it would be possible to post it back to me? I would be happy to pay postage costs. * pale blue and white cotton long dressing gown, made by a company called Indian Runner Many thanks , Sarah
