  • "We were immediately impressed by the genuine warmth of the owner on arrival."

The attention to detail in both quality / facilities and information provided to us about the cottage exuded the passion and love put into the property itself by the owners. This did not go unnoticed by us! Walton cottage was perfect for us, it was warm and cosy, the log fire was lovely to relax in front of after a day out walking in the local area. There were excellent recommendations provided to us about where to eat and drink, upcoming events and places to visit in Winster and the surrounding area also, which were greatly appreciated. What is provided here goes above and beyond all expectations. We were delighted to find this gem of a cottage in the Peak District and it felt like a home away from home. Many thanks to the owners for thinking about everything provided in our stay (so that we didn’t have to!) We would absolutely not hesitate in recommending the cottage to anyone and will definitely book to stay again. We loved it all, from the cosy nights, the hooting of the owls and the stunning views of the village and fields that greeted us every morning. Thank you so much x

Jean was very welcoming and there was complimentary tea/coffee/ milk and biscuits which was appreciated. Parking was fine once you got the angle right. The local shop was brilliant.

Peak District wonderful as always. The parking at the cottage was ok with a bit of practice! The “Rules and Regulations “ of the cottage made us a little uncomfortable.

It is well equipped, very clean, comfortable and cosy. Parking our mid-size SUV in front of the property was not a problem. Jean and Roger were excellent hosts and communicated very well with us. The village shop is well-stocked and staffed by very pleasant people. The village is really pretty. We highly recommend this cottage.

The parking space was a bonus within a village where parking is at at premium. I have noticed on some reviews people moaning the parking space is an issue (on a hill )we have a large car and found no problem at all couple of shunts and you are in . We were met by Roger on arrival which was very nice as it made us feel welcome. Village shop and pub just down the hill, both friendly and welcoming. Would highly recommend the cottage.

  • "The cottage is charming & beautifully appointed."

The addition of garden space with a stunning view make this one of the best cottages we have stayed in. The village is charming but with very steep hills, which can be challenging especially for parking. The circular walk from the cottage across the fields is just delightful. A truly wonderful stay.

It is situated in a beautiful old village but that meant that parking was quite difficult. We would have really struggled in a bigger car. The area is beautiful and we enjoyed walking in tge lovely countryside.

  • "Walton Cottage is a wonderful property in a lovely village and was the perfect base for our family of four."

The stone cottage kept us nice and cool in the heatwave, but I can imagine it would be very cosy in the winter months. There are stunning views from the garden but they are via steps so not suitable for young children or anyone with mobility issues (actually, I don’t think bookings are taken from anyone with small children!) . The owners had thought about everything and provided very clear instructions and information for before and during our stay. The cottage was well-equipped and we appreciated the little touches such as the provision of washing up liquid, washing tablets etc. not to mention the tea, coffee, milk and kitkats for our arrival. Pubs and a community shop very close by were great. There are walks on the doorstep and off-road bike rides 15 minutes away. We wouldn’t hesitate to stay there again!

  • "We had a wonderful week in Walton Cottage."

It is immaculately presented and very well equipped. Although the shower is over the bath it is more efficient than many cubicle ones we have experienced. A perfectly formed garden, with a delightful terrace at the far end giving views of the surrounding countryside. The parking space is welcome in a village where parking is at a premium. Village shop and pub are a few minutes down the hill and a few more coming up. Winster is a proper village, full of life and friendly people. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend or return ourselves.

The cottage itself is superb with a wonderful garden to relax in with amazing views. However the parking is restricted and on a hill with roadside parking up a further hill. The old bowling green pub only opens at the weekend but the miners standard at the top of the hill does fabulous food and is popular so you need to book.

Jean and Roger are brilliant hosts and take great care to ensure that you have everything you need for a lovely stay.. They took time to make sure that we were aware of local road works so we didn’t have long diversions, which was very helpful. The beds are really comfortable, the kitchen is very well equipped and the open fire was enjoyed and made chilly evenings outside, warm and cosy inside. The central heating and hot water were set so the cottage was warm and there was always plenty of hot water. The garden and views were delightful and just the right size. • "Walton Cottage is a delight."

The owners have gone to great lengths to ensure that it really is a home from home. Overall it's exceptionally clean, very well appointed and extremely comfortable whilst retaining the character of a traditional Peak District cottage. We were particularly impressed by the cosy, comfortable lounge, well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds and excellent shower but the real highlight was the charming garden where we could enjoy our breakfast and our G & T's(not at the same time!) whilst enjoying the terrific views of Winster and beyond. Winster itself is a small and friendly village that has two excellent pubs and a very useful village store. It's very close to Matlock where you'll find a plethora of shops including a large Sainsburys. This was our first trip to the Peak District and we found it really easy to drive to the major attractions and particularly recommend Haddon House, Buxton, Bakewell, Dove Dale and the easy cycle tracks which have been created along disused railway lines. There's so much more to explore and we will most certainly visit again and hope to be blessed again by glorious weather! Very many thanks to to our hosts, R & J, who really have thought of everything!!

The cottage has a lovely terraced garden in back from which you have wonderful views of the Derbyshire hills. The cottage is meticulously maintained and scrupulously clean while at the same time being very much in character. Roger and Jean made an effort to help in any way giving us ideas for pubs, places to go and even extending an invitation to a local meeting on the customs and traditions of Winster! Also, if you do not park correctly it can cause an obstruction to the neighbouring properties access as the space is quite tight. Apart from that excellent residence.

About the location

WINSTER

Bakewell 6 miles; Matlock 4.5 miles.

The conservation village of Winster is situated within the White Peak area of the Peak District National Park and is an extremely pretty place, with a charming 17th century market house at its centre, and other imposing 17th and 18th century houses, many three storeys high. The three main streets - Main Street, East Bank and West Bank are interconnected by alleyways known as ‘ginnels’, which are well worth exploring. The village of Winster is famous for its Morris dancers, the annual Shrove Tuesday pancake race, Wakes festivities in June, and the Secret Gardens of Winster event in July. Within the village there is a well-stocked, community-owned general store incorporating a Post Office. There are two pubs, both serving food and traditional beer. Bakewell, Matlock, Chatsworth House, and the Peak Rail Steam Railway are all nearby and, for keen walkers and cyclists, The Limestone Way runs along the edge of the village. The Tissington and High Peaks walking and cycling trails, with bike hire available, both lie less than 5 miles from the village, a wonderful base for exploring the Peak District.
