  • "Lovely little place."

I really enjoyed my stay and felt rested. A few very minor details would have made it a 5 from me. For example - I found the shower was difficult to work out getting the temperature right and I think other people had too as the attachment to the wall was slightly loose and needs a wee repair probably caused by trying to turn the control knob which seemed a little bit stiff and just needs to be adjusted slightly. Loved the ceiling drying rack after a couple of rainy days - nice detail. I found some of the most beautiful walks with the most amazing views around Monkswell Woods which I discovered by just heading up the hill and exploring. Breathtaking views over the river and worth the effort - good for the soul.

  • "We had a lovely stay at the cottage."

The bed was very comfortable and it looked lovely inside. It was a lovely base for us to do the Scottie dog trail, our little Scottie dog Ellie really enjoyed it. We did however have a wash every item that we needed to use in the kitchen as it was dirty. I even had to clean the utensils drawer and everything in it. All the saucepans and frying pan were the same. The frying pan could do with being replaced. There were two large oven pans that were dirty and greasy and look like they need throwing away too. After our 6 and a half hour journey having to clean wasn’t what we needed. The garden could do with some tlc too. Apart from all this we did have a lovely stay and the biscuits and milk were much appreciated thank you

Thank you for your feedback. please accept our apologies for the cleanliness of the dishes, we are very fortunate in that our guests leave these nice and clean, but on this occasion this was an oversight on my part and I can only apologise. Please be assured that these will be thoroughly checked going forward and the trays thrown out. I'm glad you had a lovely overall stay, and we hope to welcome you back soon. Property Owner

  • "Extremely nice little thatched cottage located on the entire ground floor."

There is an extensive garden at the rear with access being through the side passageway - thus it is not fully enclosed. The grass could have done with being cut meaning that we didn't make as much use of the garden with the grass being wet. The property is located in an ideal position with fantastic views across the Firth of Tay along the waterfront. From here we visited Tentsmuir Forest & Beech, Pitlochry and the Pass of Killicrankie (watch out for tics here - plenty of posters up about them), Glamis Castle, Loch Leven, Montrose Basin, House of Dun and Edinburgh - all within easy reach.

  • "Disappointed with this place."

Whilst it was fairly comfortable there is an issue with having no ventilation in the bathroom or kitchen areas. The windows are sealed and steam up badly, to the point that the fire sensor is triggered and the alarm screeches. Only two front-on-street windows can be opened but cannot be locked securely when open. Poor ventilation means the property smells of damp. Dampness is evidenced by mould on the blinds in various rooms. Bed comfortable -no issues. Kitchen adequate for simple meals. On arrival we found the fridge dirty with stale bits of food, and some cups a crockery placed away as clean – but they had barely been rinsed and put away. There is no direct backdoor access point to the garden, you have to walk from the front door onto the public street then through the archway passage to get to the garden. Perhaps not an issue if you don’t have a dog, but dogs have toileting needs during the dark hours. The garden isn’t gated at all, so dogs need to be supervised constantly and on a lead. Whilst a torch is available some guide lights would help keep you on the path, rather than stumble in the ruts and dips in the ground hidden by the unkempt grass.

Thank you for your feedback. Your comments on ventilation have been noted, however being a listed building, there's maybe little we can do. Apologies for the kitchen, this was an oversight as everything is checked. For the back door, there is nothing we can do, when the property was first built, the garden was accessed via a close but as the property has been modernised, the bathroom was more purposeful. We can certainly look into garden lighting, now that we are into the darker winter months! Property Owner

! Newburgh was an excellent location in itself and the surrounding area was fabulous with so many places to visit. The locals were so friendly and helpful and the weather was glorious. What could be better!! The only slight negative was the lack of eating places in the close vicinity but there was a bakery and a butchers in the village so we definitely didn't go hungry!! Would definitely recommend anyone to visit the area and Shortbread Cottage. Thank you so much to the owners for providing us (and our little dog, Islay) with such a perfect place to stay.

The houses are all built like this in the street, so the way it is. The nighbors are very kind and helpful, one nice lady brought me salad from her garden. I can recommend this beautiful cottage

But you can get to lots of places and beautiful country sides.

Thank you for your comments & sorry for our delay in responding. We were sorry to read your issues with the indirect access to the back garden; when the property was created in around 1604 there was a passageway directly out the back but no shower room, so hopefully on balance the current layout is preferable. Hi Gary, I am sorry that the fault in the heating thermostat (which you correctly identified as being due to a weak battery in the remote control) impacted upon your holiday. • "Lovely, cosy cottage."

Nicely furnished and decorated. Clean, although there was a damp smell in the bedroom if the door was kept closed but was fine if the door was kept open. Great place to explore Fife, not far from St Andrews, Dundee and Perth. Lovely walking routes in Newburgh and a great park for walking the dog. The garden is not accessible directly from the house so to let the dog out you have to walk them out of the front door onto the street and round into the back garden which is not the most convenient when the dog gets you up at 3am! The description also says parking for 2 cars, however, there was only a free parking space for one car for the week I stayed which wasn't a problem as I was on my own but could be a problem if you needed two.

  • "This is a beautiful and elegantly furnished cottage, but for us, it was a great surprise and disappointment to find that the garden was not attached to the cottage, and there was no back door."

In fact ‘No where’ , and I did check afterwards with Sykes, did it mention this. One had to go back down the front steps, onto the main road, walk about 15 meters, turn under the arch, round the back past the communal drying green and then into the garden- (which was also beautiful) The garden only really mattered to us as we had a dog, and as during our stay it rained every day, it was quite a hike round the back every time our dog needed a wee or a short walk. It also meant my husband had to get dressed at night as instead of letting the dog out the back door to wee, as he had to take him out the front onto the road. It also meant a lot of work to ensure that coming back in the front door in the pouring rain that the dog and my husband were dry and clean before entering the light colour carpeted sitting room or bedroom, This is a lovely cottage, but maybe not for dog owners - or at least it should clearly say that there is no back door onto the garden and let dog owners choose.

Inside it was as the photos, owners had left it clean and it was comfortable. There is plenty of space for clothes and in the kitchen everything you need to prepare meals. Plenty to see and do in the surrounding area. My only negative would be that we had a dog and the garden wasn't accessible by a door leading directly out, we had to go around the side of the cottage.
