Altenmarkt is a picturesque, traditional Austrian village nestled in a valley in the heart of the Austrian Alps. The village has a good range of local amenities such as shops, banks, supermarkets, traditional and modern restaurants and medical facilities. The area is perfect for activity holidays in summer and winter. Miles of marked walking and cycling paths (cycle hire in the village) can be accessed from the village and riding and swimming are available nearby. Ski lifts operate in summer to give walkers access to the mountain paths. Altenmarkt and its sister village of Zauchensee are winter sport centres, with skiing (alpine and x-country), tobogganing, skating and curling facilities. It is at the heart of the Ski Alliance Amade, which covers 276 ski lifts and close to 900km of pistes for all abilities in 5 ski areas from Schladming in the north to Gastein in the south. The local ski area linking Altenmarkt to Radstadt, is just outside the village and is reached by a free ski bus which also takes skiers up to Zauchensee, a main access point to the Sportwelt Amade ski area. Further afield, Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart and location of ‘The Sound of Music’, the Salzkammergut Lake District and Hohetauern Grossglockner and Konigsee National Parks are all within an hour’s drive. Close to the motorway, Altenmarkt is easily reached by road from Salzburg (45 miles) or Munich (100miles) airports. Good local transport links also give easy access to Salzburg and the surrounding towns and villages.

Local lakes pretty. Market town with plenty of restaurants offering high quality traditional and fast foods. Local people very friendly including public transport and taxis.
