About the location
Edinburgh 6 miles.
First settled by the Romans following their invasion of Scotland in AD 80, Musselburgh started as a fort, inland from the mouth of the River Esk. The name Musselburgh derives from Old English with mussel meaning shellfish and burgh, the Old English for town. Renowned for its racecourse and it's many golf courses, Musselburgh sits only 6 miles along the Forth coast from Edinburgh and is on the John Muir Way. This 45-mile coastal path in East Lothian stretches from Edinburgh to Dunglass in the Scottish Borders, and is named after John Muir, founder of America's National Parks, who was born in Dunbar in 1838. Just along the coast from Musselburgh is the beach resort of Portobello and its wide sandy beach, its many community run activities, the Victorian Portobello baths and the many cafes and shops on offer.
