About the location
Jedburgh 20.5 miles; Peebles 22 miles.
The historic town of Selkirk, a Royal Burgh, stands on a hillside overlooking the River Ettrick, itself a tributary of the famous River Tweed. One of the oldest Royal Burghs and one of the earliest settlements in what is now the Scottish Borders, Selkirk has many attractions to offer visitors. Apart from the glorious scenery that surrounds the town, there is much to suit both energetic and less energetic visitors. Fishing is well catered for, being so close to the Tweed, and cycling in the renowned Glentress Forest, which is only a short drive away. The beautiful valleys of Ettrick and Yarrow provide a stunning backdrop to an enjoyable day's walking and there are plenty of routes that can be followed. Less energetic but no less rewarding is to explore the Sir Walter Scott connections with the town, visit Halliwells' House and museum, one of the oldest dwellings in the town, or the Bowhill Estate, home to the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry, and its magnificent collection paintings and artworks. In June of each year, the Selkirk Common Riding takes place and is an amazing collection of horses and riders taking place in an ancient tradition.
