  • "Rhydlandgoed is a lovely cottage attached to the main house."

It is very comfortable and nicely furnished and with little oddments (ornaments, pictures) scattered around to make it feel homely rather than an anonymous rented space. Everything we needed was provided - logs for the woodburner, towels, bedding, crockery, cooking utensils, hair drier etc..We really enjoyed it. The owners were very welcoming and looked after us without being in any way intrusive. When we had a power cut they quickly brought over lanterns so that we weren't completely in the dark (it only lasted about 10 minutes). The main house has beautiful gardens, which you are free to make use of, and it is all set amidst the National Trust Colby Woodland Garden. So quite isolated. It's a 20 minute walk down a woodland track into Amroth village, where there are three pubs and a couple of shops. It is probably possible to drive down but we preferred not to. Make sure to take a torch for dark nights! Amroth itself has an expansive beach and is well placed for exploring. You can walk to Saundersfoot along the beach at low tide, although some rock clambering is involved if you don't want to get wet feet. Tenby, Narbeth, Laugharne and Stackpole are all a short drive away, with St. Davids being about an hour. Very enjoyable and recommended.

Our hosts Carolyn and Tony were welcoming on arrival and gave us a tour and history of the property. The cottage is set in the most beautiful setting and at this time of year the rhododendrons and azaleas were stunning. It is bright and spacious with comfortable beds and tastefully furnished, very homely. You can also visit tea room next door which serves delicious cakes. There is just a 15 minute walk through the grounds to the small seaside village of Amroth with a welcoming pub which serves very nice food. We walked with our dogs to the next seaside town of Saundersfoot via the Pembrokeshire Coastal path, there are very steep steps at first to climb but the views at the top are well worth it. If the tide is out then you can walk on the beach. Tenby is a short drive away and Barafundle beach and Bosherston lakes are a must visit. It is a piece of paradise, quite and tranquil.

The property

A superb stone-built 16C Grade II listed wing of the owner’s home, Colby Lodge, in the village of Stepaside, close to Amroth beach and Narberth in the gorgeous area of Pembrokeshire.

Colby Lodge is set in National Trust woodland gardens, with over 2.5 acres of private gardens and surrounded by 1,000 acres of National Trust woodland.

Set in a beautiful and secluded location, the cottage, built in the 16 century, retains its original name Rhydlangoed, (The ford by the wood).

The main house was built later in 1803 by the coal merchant John Colby.

It is a wonderful place for either a romantic break or even a break with family or small group of friends for a good get together.

It’s a perfect location for artists with the beautiful gardens literally on the doorstep, a stimulating walk along the woodland path will take you straight to Amroth beach.

On entering the cottage, there is a small hallway with storage for boots and hanging space for coats.

This then leads you into the well-equipped kitchen with its’ own dining area, making it a great social space to enjoy whilst the chef is preparing a lovely home-cooked meal.

From here takes you into a cosy sitting room with comfy sofas and a log burner, making it a relaxing place for those cooler evenings.

The stairs take you up to two pretty bedrooms, both with character feature windows and wonderful views of the beautiful gardens.

A passageway takes you down to the spacious bathroom with a good-sized bath and shower; great for a nice soak after a full day out and about.

From the hallway, a back door leads to an enclosed cobbled courtyard, ideal for breakfast in the sunshine, to which the owner also has access.

At the front door of the property is a bistro set, perfect for catching the evening sun.

A pathway leads over a small bridge to a picnic bench in a private wooded area, exclusively for cottage guests.

Please exercise care over the bridge and the stream, especially when supervising children.

The gardens extend to a vast meadow; perfect for outdoor activities or walking.

Adjacent to the property are National Trust paths throughout the extensive woodlands and leading to Amroth beachfront.

Colby also has a National Trust walled garden with a gazebo and a water feature set in lovely gardens with statues and benches to enjoy the lovely scenery.

There is also a National Trust information centre, tea room and a gallery with a gift shop to visit.

About the location

STEPASIDE

Amroth 1 mile; Saundersfoot 4 miles; Tenby 6.5 miles; Narberth 7 miles; Pembroke 10.8 miles.

Once home to both coal and iron mines, Stepaside is now a holiday hamlet with a few houses pubs and restaurants. This valley was a hive of industrial activity from the 14th to the 19th century as it was an integral part of the Pembrokeshire coal field. It’s hard to imagine that now, as very little remains apart from the old ironworks at Stepaside and the railway tunnels between Wisemans Bridge and Saundersfoot. There were 12 collieries working in this area at its heyday. The whole of Pembrokeshire beckons with the harbour and seaside resorts of Amroth just 15 minutes’ walk away, Tenby and Saundersfoot close by, visit secluded sandy beaches, such as the acclaimed Barafundle Bay for a quiet relaxing day, or take in an invigorating walk along the Pembrokeshire Coast National Path. Enjoy a boat trip to Caldey Island and its monastery, or to Skomer, which is renowned for its puffins. For the most adventurous, extreme watersports await, whilst golfers can take the challenge of Tenby's famous links course. The nearby town of Narberth is a delight to discover with its many individual shops, including upmarket boutiques, specialist deli grocers and unique gift shops, and a wide choice of restaurants, bistros and pubs can be found in and around the town. Queen's Hall, Narberth's leading cultural and arts venue hosts a variety of concerts, plays and events, which can be enjoyed throughout the year. A perfect holiday base at any time of year.
