  • "This was our third stay at Woodend Annexe, this time as a party of 5."

The cottage was clean, the beds very comfortable and the Annexe is well equipped on every level. The owners are very welcoming, but by no means intrusive. It’s ideally situated in amazing woodlands but a short drive from Chichester, Arundel and Brighton. As this was our third time, it’s obvious we would definitely stay again. It has all you’ll need for a perfect getaway.

Ten minutes from beautiful Arundel - the castle and moat tour well worth visiting. Also enjoyed Climping beach, Denmans garden - cafe did good breakfast, Swanbourne lake, Fishbourne Roman villa, Petworth house, Uppark and Aldingbourne country farm. The Stables pub which is walking distance from the property via an underpass under the busy dual carriageway was good. The welcome pack with milk (2 different types! butter, orange juice and bread) was more than we expected or have ever found at any of the accommodations. We needed an 'adapted' place to accommodate a disabled person and although this is not a place designed for disabled, we managed relatively well. But, as a note of caution, the disabled person has to have some level of mobility and be a little flexible. But the facilities are excellent, the place is extremely quiet and relatively close (but no walking distance, so you need a transport mean) to all you require. But plenty of locations for long walks or long cycle rides. For disabled people with 'off'road' electric wheelchair or as in our case, a trike) we recommend the cycle ride from Bramber to Shoreham along the Downs Link. But don't go the other direction, Bramber to Southwaters as that is almost a mountain bike track! But as far as the accommodation, it is a highly recommended location for holiday in the South Downs or the South coast.

An ideal base for those looking for peace and relaxation, this spacious Fontwell cottage boasts a mix of contemporary and traditional furnishings, allowing families and friends a place to holiday together.

By adding a lower worktop in the lovely, well-equipped kitchen, it allows those guests needing to sit while preparing meals to do so, plus the superb sitting area, in the same room as the kitchen, is very inviting.

There are three attractive bedrooms at this South Downs cottage, including two with en-suite facilities, and one boasting garden views and a Juliet balcony.

From the conservatory, step outside into the delightful English cottage garden, which surrounds this Fontwell holiday home, just the place for alfresco dining, or just sitting and taking a break at the end of a long day of exploring this haven of historic towns, racecourses or National Trust properties that this part of Sussex is famous for.

Fontwell Park Racecourse, with its 23 meetings each year, is just a few minutes' away, and the market town of Arundel is only five miles away and has a castle, set alongside the River Arun, a cathedral, art galleries, tea rooms and cobbled streets.

About the location

FONTWELL

Arundel 5 miles; Goodwood 5 miles; Chichester 6 miles; Petworth 11 miles; Worthing 14 miles.

Fontwell is a small hamlet in the heart of the Sussex countryside, made famous by Fontwell Park Racecourse, where in October 1949 Princess Elizabeth, now Queen Elizabeth II had her first win as the owner of Monaveen. The racecourse is still a popular venue with 23 meetings each year, including the customary Boxing Day race day. Fontwell itself is made up of several scattered cottages and equestrian centres, nestled within Slindon Woods on the edge of the South Downs National Park. Arundel is 5 miles to the east, here visitors are able to tread cobbled streets and explore this pretty market town with its castle and cathedral both set high up on the hills overlooking the River Arun. Arundel also offers quaint shops, art galleries and a number of pubs and restaurants, as well as a monthly farmers’ market, here you can buy local cheeses and breads, along with fruits and cakes, so why not fill your picnic basket and head for the South Downs, or to the coast for a day on the beach. You cannot come to this part of Sussex without visiting Goodwood. With horse racing, motor racing and Goodwood House, a 17th century stately house home to the Duke of Richmond (open to the public from March to October) everyone will have a day to remember. With so much to see and do you will want to return to this Sussex hamlet time and again.
