The market town of Barnard Castle is situated in the unspoilt countryside of Teesdale in County Durham. It stands on the site of an ancient Roman ford which crosses the river. The medieval ruins of the castle still tower over the river and are well worth a visit. Known affectionately as ‘Barney’ by residents and visitors alike, the town boasts cobble streets, yards and back lanes, which were first laid out in the 12th century. Beautiful walking country is right on the doorstep with The Pennine and Teesdale Ways, and the River Tees and magnificent waterfalls at High Force are all within easy reach.

A good centre to visit many interesting places. We appreciated the peace and quietness of the area which might not have suited city folk!

Beautiful rural cottage with magnificent views. Well set out and I would go back tomorrow. Although quiet and peaceful it was a very short drive to Barnard Castle which is a lovely village with good shops. Always in the background is the sound of the river which is very soothing.
