The pretty Teesdale village of Staindrop has always been closely associated with the fortunes of nearby Raby Castle and its owners. The Castle (open to the public) is one of the most grand in England. Enlarged and beautified over the centuries, the medieval heart remains and a walled garden and 200 acre deer park add to the splendour. Staindrop has many interesting shops, pubs and cafes set round its long village green. The popular market town of Barnard Castle is 5 miles away, with its castle, the Bowes Museum, plus of course its wide range of shops and tea-rooms. Walkers will enjoy the many walks around Teesdale.

Staindrop 1.5 miles. Situated on a working farm, on the edge of the sleepy hamlet of Cleatlam, Strathmore Barns comprise the imaginative conversion of old stone byres and barns, set around a central courtyard. Care has been taken to convert the buildings to provide high quality holiday properties, retaining original features and character. Picture windows provide visitors with wonderful views over the lower reaches of the Teesdale Valley. Cleatlam itself offers wide greens (often with ponies put out to graze) at its centre. Guests will enjoy a wide range of facilities, with a play area for children and relaxing areas for adults. With the owners on hand to ensure a warm and comfortable stay, these properties are in the ideal location for exploring nearby Teesdale, Durham and the Yorkshire Dales. Note: The properties can be booked together to accommodate up to 22 people.
Millstone boasts its own sauna and spa bath, and is laid out in an ‘upside down’ fashion, with a large picture window making the most of the views. Finished to the same high standards as the other properties, providing a superb base for any holiday. Note: Butterwick and Millstone can be offered together to form a single unit accommodating 10/12, linked by solid wood soundproof door, ensuring privacy when booked separately, and a cosy atmosphere when taken together.
Three bedrooms (ground floor): 1 x king size four poster bed, plus single bed, with ensuite shower room (with shower, basin & WC) and separate sauna, 1 x double, 1 x twin. House bathroom with spa bath (shower on taps), basin and WC. Open plan living area (first floor), with kitchen, dining and sitting areas. Stone steps leading from kitchen to private courtyard. Galleried area between sitting and dining area, leading down to entrance hall.
Full central heating/hot water from ‘eco-friendly’ wood-chip farm heating system. Electric cooker, hob, microwave, fridge, freezer, washer/dryer, dishwasher, colour TV with Freeview, video/DVD, music system, etc. All fuel and power inc. in the rent. Bed linen and towels inc. in rent. Cot and highchair on request. Off road parking for 2 cars. Shared courtyard to front, with garden furniture. Private courtyard/patio to rear. Designated play area for children (adult supervision required). Sorry, no smoking. One well behaved pet welcome, charged at £20 per pet. Shop, pub etc in Staindrop, 1.5 miles.

The kids loved the working farm and the ponies. The cottage owners were the nicest family we have ever met. The sleepy village of Cleatlam is so relaxing and peaceful but really close to great days out. All in all an excellent cottage and excellent holiday.
