Barnard Castle 10 miles.

The attractive village of Piercebridge with its splendid village green, excellent village pubs and organic farm shop is located on the Teesdale border, next to the river Tees, just 10 miles east of Barnard Castle. The village is renowned for its Roman heritage, which dates back to around 70 AD. The Piercebridge Roman Fort Site, a recognised ancient monument, forms part of the region’s Dere Street Roman Trail, a celebration of the rich Roman heritage still to be enjoyed in the area. Forming part of the Teesdale Way, and within easy reach of the Cleveland Way, this walker’s paradise provides an excellent base from which walkers and cyclists can explore this delightful Dales area including nearby Swaledale and Weardale, with many bridleways, footpaths, cycle trails and lovely riverside walks available. Local attractions include the magnificent Raby Castle in nearby Staindrop, the Bowes Museum, Yorks National Railway Museum, Durham Cathedral and of course the delightful market town of Barnard Castle. The village is also ideally placed for touring the Lake District and the Northumbrian National Park.

Previous visitors' comments about Rose Cottage:

This is the second time we had stayed at Rose Cottage. The cottage is brilliant being set in its own grounds and having a dog proof garden. So quiet and peaceful at nighttime. We love the coal fire for nighttime, its so cosy. Both the Carlbury Arms and The George are within a two minutes walk and the food is very good at both. Good walks from the cottage and regular bus service to Darlington if you want a break from driving. We will return to Rose Cottage in the future.
