About the location

Bowes

Barnard Castle 4 miles.

The pretty village of Bowes is situated amid the unspoilt countryside of Teesdale, in County Durham. The village boasts a traditional old pub and has a long history dating back to the Romans. Its most famous landmark is Bowes Castle, built on the site of the original Roman fort soon after the Norman Conquest. Bowes also has a significant connection with Charles Dickens and Dotheboys Hall in the heart of the village is believed to have been the inspiration for Nicholas Nickleby. Nearby is the market town of Barnard Castle, whose medieval ruins still tower over the river and are well worth a visit. The town itself boasts cobbled streets, yards and back lanes that were originally laid in the 12th Century. Within easy reach are the Bowes Museum, Pennine and Teesdale Ways, the River Tees and the magnificent waterfalls at High Force.

The accommodation was very comfortable and warm with everything you need, as well as a good range of DVDs, books and games. Fantastic views across the countryside.

Ms Milton, Newcastle Upon Tyne, October 2013

The accomodation was superb. The owners were very helpful to ensure an excellent stay.

Mr Gabbitas, Blackpool, August 2013

The property was spacious, beautifully furnished and set in the most relaxing idyllic setting with views of open countryside from every window. My expectations were high from the photos on Sykes site but the overall holiday experience was beyond expectations. My only regret is I didn't book the holiday cottage for longer!

Mrs Hayes, Gainsborough, July 2013

A beautifully decorated property in a peaceful countryside setting with great walking straight out of the door (great for bird watching and wildlife spotting). Everything has been thought of! Welcoming owners who are there if you need help. Would love to visit again any time of year to get away from everything.

Mrs Hirst, Sheffield, June 2013
