  • "We all enjoyed our 2 night stay at this lovely little cottage for a hen weekend it was clean and we loved the log fire at night, we were given a bottle of prosecco on arrival which was lovely."

The hot tub was very clean and everything there that we needed in and around cottage was there. I would come stay here again. Only thing was where the rubbish is kept in a shed at back of cottage there wasn't much room for household rubbish and recycling it was already nearly full when we needed to dispose of rubbish but this is just a minor thing.

  • "This cottage is stunning."

The hot tub was amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The pictures don’t do the cottage justice. The only negative is the fencing around the property. The fence has gaps between the slats. Our dogs are large and couldn’t escape, but other dogs could go under the fence and get in to the garden. This meant we couldn’t let our dogs out freely as they react to other dogs, but it didn’t spoil our stay at all.

  • "What a wonderful find this cottage is."

We were a family of 6 adults and 2 children and we never felt cramped. It’s very specious, very clean and the hot tub is lovely. Lots of extras that we’ve not come across before on similar properties such as coffee pods, dishwasher tablets and supplies for the washing machine. Had a lovely walk by the river (bring your wellies in winter months) the log fire was a treat in November. Only 3 miles from Durham but felt like we were in the middle of nowhere as it’s so peaceful yes so accessible. We will be back in the summer hopefully. Thank you to the host Peter

Well maintained. Nice touch to have cupboards with essentials like tea, coffee & sugar etc. WiFi a bit intermittent at times - possibly due to the rural location. Lovely location for walks along the river and easy access to Durham and the surrounding areas. Would definitely recommend.

The bedrooms are spacious with the most comfortable beds. The lounge area was cosy and the log burner warmed the cockles after a dip in the Hot Tub. We stayed over Christmas and the kitchen was well stocked with pots, pans, utensils and dinnerware - enough to cook and serve a feast. The Owner was on hand to service the Hot Tub and sort the leaking shower and the Christmas decs added to the festive spirit. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay with next level service from booking to leaving.

All the rooms were very spacious and had unique features. The property is surrounded by fields but only 10 minutes to get into Durham. The walks through the woods surrounding the cottage were worth getting muddy and finding the sculptures were a challenge. The hot tub was a delight and very welcome after getting soaked during the day!

The cottage is really lovely , clean, spacious, each room has a double comfy bed and the hot tub is big and fits all 8 of us in . The kitchen has a dishwasher and plenty of space to cook. The lounge area has a fire and plenty of seats for guests . 2 bathrooms one upstairs and one down - clean and well designed. Towels provided for both showering and hot tub . The location of this property is fantastic only 10/15 mins drive in to Durham centre. I will be coming back to this place. It’s ticks all the boxes for us. There is really nice walk , gated entrance to a near by field that takes to the river and short incline to the wicker man. Highly recommend this place and look forward to returning.

It proved to be the perfect place for our weekend family gathering: the huge parking area was a real bonus as we all made our way there separately in four vehicles. The owner was friendly and approachable, and his advice about the local area was invaluable during our short stay ( particularly his intimate knowledge of the best place to park for a speedy getaway after attending the Great North Run!) Highly recommended

  • "Overall, we had a lovely time at Orchard Cottage, thank you Peter for checking in on us just after we arrived."

Overall, the cottage suited our holiday plans and size of group. The indoor facilities were generally excellent. Some minor points which may be worth considering, or instructions amended: there is only one standard sized cupboard for dry food storage in the kitchen; the refuse bin was not collected as per instructions left; there is not an extraction fan in the upstairs bathroom, shower door opened onto the sink so access was somewhat limited into the shower, on our day of arrival, there was very limited hot water available for evening bath/showers (for a group of six); rooms were spacious but dusty; the hoover is fairly ineffective on carpet; the dishwasher needed rinse aid and salt on our day of arrival; the freezer needs defrosting. The outdoor facilities were generally excellent. Some minor points which may be worth considering, or instructions amended: the hot tub is kept at temperature constantly - this must be energy hungry?; the perimeter fencing is not consistently secure; another neighbour’s dog was repeatedly in the garden which impacted on us letting our dog outdoors, we also had to pick up dog waste not originating from our dog; the sheep were moved mid-week to the paddock adjacent to the garden, it would have helped our planning (ref our dog) to know in advance that was going to happen; the washing line would benefit from additional pegs.

  • "Lovely cottage in superb location with amazing walks and hot tub."

A few things need to be addressed: The fridge is woefully too small for 8 adults and 2 infants over the period of a week, we had to throw some food and milk away as it had gone off. The dustbin is a standard domestic wheelie bin and one only and was almost full on arrival though emptied on the following Tuesday after our arrival the previous Friday and only the standard kerb side box for bottles. The cleaning of the premises wasn’t great either I could write my name on the bedside lamps bases on arrival and the bathroom cabinet was very dirty inside. None of this detracted from our wonderful stay celebrating my sixtieth birthday and generally the cottage is beautiful and I would not hesitate to return and recommend.

The cottage is surprisingly big and easily accommodates up to 8 people, it has a lovely riverside walk that starts right next to the cottage and a hot tub. What more could you want? Also you're only a short drive from Duhram, which is definitely worth a visit or three. The only issue we had was solved in the first few hours we were there by the owner (Peter) who notified me that there was an issue with the hot tub pump and that he was already on the way to pick up the new part (on a bank holiday, what a legend) safe to say it wasn't a problem for long. Also, throughout the day you're likely to get visited by the friendliest dogs ever who just want your love and definitely not that pizza crust you have left over. Highly recommend.

The Cottage was absolutely beautiful and finished to a very high standard with all the rooms being spacious and tastefully decorated. The owner was very welcoming, greeting us on arrival to show us the facilities and also recommended some local takeaways given that we'd arrived fairly late on Friday evening. Although the owners live on the same estate as the cottage and were on hand should we have needed anything, they were not intrusive and we were left to quiet enjoyment! We were visited by the owners dogs who were absolutely lovely and keen for tummy rubs and lot of fussing. :-) The (electric) hot tub was fabulous and the wood burning stove in the living area was perfect after getting out of the hot tub on a very cold and wet January evening in Durham! Durham town centre was only a 15 minute drive away but if you wanted to avoid the hustle and bustle then the cottage was well situated close to river and a number of walks. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this cottage and will definitely be visiting again. Thank you!

Looked stunning but could do with some TLC. Kitchen surfaces are poured concrete but don’t seem to have a resin coating so surface is porous, can’t be wiped clean. The entire kitchen was a bit grubby and sticky. Sealant around sink missing and or black with mildew. Chipped china, only 5 large plates for a property sleeping 8 people. Broken blender and other odd assorted kitchen items in cupboards. Fridge smelled and was not clean when we arrived. Oven very dirty. Big old coffee machine that we couldnt get to function properly, a simple cafetière would have been better. Downstairs bathroom has stone floor with stone ‘ledge’ around shower which was very easy to stub toes on. Shower floor was slimy and mouldy. Sofas look very tired/worn and some of the mattresses were lumpy and uncomfortable. Not very child friendly due to slippery wooden staircase and uneven stone floor downstairs. Owners live on site and very welcoming. Ideal location for Durham. Very pretty surroundings.

Owners Response Thank you for your feedback :- 12 sets of new tableware have been bought. The worktops are sealed, but we have taken the precaution of another coat. The kitchen and shower sealant now stripped and re-sealed. New blender purchased. Added a new cafetiere and Nespresso machine are now available. Repairs to existing Sofas completed and new Sofas planned for 2019 season. Property Owner
