EYAM

Bakewell 5 miles; Tideswell 5 miles.

Eyam is one of the best-preserved villages in the Peak District National Park, nestled at the foot of Sir William Hill, 800ft above sea level and is surrounded by the most glorious countryside. Historically the village is known as the famous 'plague village', as it went into voluntary quarantine when the plague was imported from London in 1665 and thus prevented the spread of the disease. There are many fine old houses in Eyam, and parts of the village have been kept as they looked several centuries ago, such as Eyam Hall, a beautiful 17th century manor house with delightful gardens, craft shops and tea rooms. Above the village lies Eyam Moor, a fine area for walking, with fantastic views across the Derwent Valley, with its many Bronze Age remains and monuments. Visit Bakewell (5 miles) a picturesque market town which holds a livestock market every Monday and the home of the world famous Bakewell Pudding. Explore the mysterious caverns of Castleton, the elegant spa town of Buxton or enjoy the many stately homes on offer at Chatsworth, Haddon Hall and Hardwick Hall, to mention a few. With Alton Towers, Britain's premier theme park, only a short drive away, this is an ideal base for all the family.

The Property: Steeple Barn Cottage

A delightful semi-detached stone built barn conversion, situated in the very heart of the village of Eyam, in the Peak District National Park. This recently renovated holiday home benefits from a first floor living room providing lovely views across the open countryside to Eyam Ridge. The spacious and well-equipped accommodation also retains many of the original features including old beams, imposing grit-stone fireplaces and a decorative cooking range. A short walk through the delightful village takes you to the Miner's Arms, reputed to be one of the most haunted buildings in Derbyshire (which could make for an interesting night out!). With picturesque Bakewell just 5 miles away, not to mention such stately homes as Chatsworth, Haddon Hall and Hardwick Hall, this is an ideal base for walking and exploring the many attractions of the Peak District National Park.

Warm welcome but unobtrusive, great property for our large party, excellent location and loads to do in the area, we didn't want to come home!

The owners made every effort to make us feel welcome and to ensure that we enjoyed our stay. Christmas decorations were very tastefully displayed and the whole effect was to make our whole group feel very comfortable and thoroughly at our ease. It was a wonderful Christmas break in a very pleasant setting indeed. Thoroughly recommended and we look forward to visiting Derbyshire again.

The house had an excellent atmosphere. We were on a writing retreat and it was very conducive to working. The town and local pub were very friendly. Overall a fantastic holiday.
