BARNARD CASTLE The market town of Barnard Castle is situated in the unspoilt countryside of Teesdale in County Durham. It stands on the site of an ancient Roman ford which crosses the river. The medieval ruins of the castle still tower over the river and are well worth a visit. Known affectionately as 'Barney' by residents and visitors alike, the town boasts cobble streets, yards and back lanes which were first laid out in the 12th century. Beautiful walking country is right on the doorstep with The Pennine and Teesdale Ways, the River Tees and magnificent waterfalls at High Force are all within easy reach. A superb detached stone built property, thoughtfully converted from a former stables, situated in an elevated position within the grounds of the owner's farm in the sleepy hamlet of Wycliffe, just 5 miles from Barnard Castle. The cottage offers light and spacious accommodation, and contains many original exposed beams, as well as a handsome open fireplace in the sitting room. French windows in the sitting room and double bedroom take advantage of the fabulous views over lovely countryside and the river Tees, which can be seen from every window in the property. A superb place to relax; enjoy the tranquillity, play golf, take a lovely walk or visit the many attractions of the area. Accommodation Two bedrooms: 1 x double, 1 x twin with en-suite (shower, basin & WC). House bathroom with bath, washbasin & WC. Well equipped, spacious kitchen with dining area. Light and airy beamed sitting room with open fire and lovely views onto the surrounding countryside. Amenities Full oil-fired central heating with additional heating from open fire in sitting room. Gas cooker, microwave, fridge (no icebox), washer/dryer, colour TV, video etc. All fuel, power and initial supply of fuel for open fire inc. in rent. Bed linen and towels inc. in rent. Secure off road parking for 2 cars. Garden with lawn and patio, which opens onto the surrounding fields. Sorry, no smoking and no pets. Shop 5 miles, pub 20 minutes walk (5 mins drive). | Previous Visitors' Comments | The owners were friendly,helpful and relaxed. We felt we had stumbled across an area of the country we didnt know well and here were fantastic views, great walks, lovely towns and a warm cottage with open fires to come back to.
We thorougly enjoyed our stay and would use Sykes again.

Dec 2007 | A lovely homely cottage set in wonderful views. A feeling of being outside at the same time as being inside with the fantastic french windows overlooking gorgeous countryside view. Cosy and romantic with the log fire burning. A paradise for horse lovers as there were horses outside the French windows.
