  • "I very much enjoyed my stay at Coopers cottage, its location so close to the Centre of Pickering is very handy and the town is lovely for a visitor."

The surrounding areas are great too, so close to the moors and to other interesting towns and villages. My dog loved exploring with me and the town is very dog friendly. The steam train does not run during the winter, but I'd certainly like to come back when it is running because the route looks spectacular. The cottage was comfortable and well equipped. Some minor repairs are required, especially the shower tray, as it has not been installed level and due to this, the water does not drain well enough and I was concerned that it would flood the floor, so I only used the bath. The tap in the kitchen was loose also, which made it difficult to use. I was worried about parking, but this wasn't difficult, I parked on the road but the pass to park in the nearby car park for free was great. Overall, it was a lovely week away.

It is well placed for local walks, restaurants and pubs. We enjoyed the log burner on chilly evenings, and a long soak in the bath after a walk. We had days out in Whitby, Scarborough and Filey which were easily reached from the cottage. A good base for holidays and the dog had a great time!

Well positioned cottage very comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay wished it was longer. The dog enjoyed it and there was a brilliant pullover gate at the top of the stairs to stop her getting in the bedrooms. The only things we found were missing was a second oven glove (very difficult to get things out of the oven with one) and a tea cosy (no point of a pot without a cosy).

  • "The cottage was ok, BUT we felt that the maintenance of the property was not up to scratch."

The kettle badly needed descaling, the toaster was full of crumbs so had to empty it before I could use it. The shower was lovely but the shower door kept opening whilst showering, worried that it would flood the floor in the bathroom. It also drained very slowly. The reception on the tv in the lounge was extremely poor. Maybe moving the microwave away from the BT hub, might improve the wifi. We also had some health and safety concerns and whilst we appreciate that it is a old cottage with steep stairs, we felt that there should have been some rail/barrier on the open side of the stairs, to prevent falls. Also the kitchen taps hot and cold were the wrong way round. The cold tap should be on the right hand side. The information pack provided is out of date. There is no public recycling bin and The Sun public house does not serve food. With a small amount of effort these things could be easily rectified.

The cottage itself was okay but lacked little touches like soap in the bathroom and air freshener. The kitchen was dated especially the tiling and could do with a refurb. Nice bathroom but the basin tap is too tight to use comfortably and needs adjustment.

Overall a very nice place to stay, location is very central for touring this beautiful area with shops a places to eat a short walk away. It is very central to get to other towns and villages. A little letdown as it stated that there wasoff road parking, which we took this to be at the cottage, not on the local carpark. I emailed and sent a text message days before our stay asking if there was any chance to get into the cottage before 4.00pm. I had no response untill I messaged on the day at 1.30 asking about were to find the key. I had a response instantly with where to park and where the key safe was, saying the cottage was ready for us. This was to late to know that we could get in earlier as we left later from our home so we were not having to hang around waiting to get in. Also there is only one very small window that opens upstairs so if there was a fire you would have to smash windows to get out safely.

The skirting board in the bathroom was not fixed to the wall properly and had gaps behind. Windows to the front of the property were sealed closed and couldn't be opened in the hot weather. The beds were very uncomfortable and lumpy. In the lounge the sofa was quite possibly broken as when you sat in certain areas you felt like you fell through the top of the sofa. In the kitchen tiles were cracked / broken. The two teapots were dirty and needed to be cleaned before use. The listing says that there is a barbecue but this could not be found. There is an undercover seated area outside but this is filthy and could not be used. In general the whole house was shabby and needs an overhaul and also needs a good clean from top to bottom and all the blinds were full of dust, radiators were full of dirt and dust and a large accumulation of dust was behind the grandfather clocks

It was very atmospheric and we were thrilled with that. With it being cold weather it would be nice to have a couple of throws to sit and watch tv. However, you can always take fluffy socks and a jumper. The tv upstairs is small for the room and we couldn't get it to work at all. In the bedrooms there was only 1 socket with plug in adaptors. Nowhere to charge phone, laptop and iPads etc. A weak wifi signal. Could do with a shaving socket in the bathroom. Luxury bathroom with quite a high bath, so be aware of that. Combi boiler meant lots of hot water. The beds were comfy and warm. One of the quilts was eiderdown, so be aware if you have allergies just ask for a different one. One of the bedrooms had a privacy curtain wall. That was ok for us. It was fab as our base. It's between a Chinese and an Indian takeaway. You can't notice smells at all. We tried the Indian takeaway which was very tasty. There's a canny little shop nearby. Out of the gate, take a left and walk approximately 100m, cross the road and it's next to the fish shop. All in all, having been to many other apartments and cottages, this was great and suitable for 3 people or 2 couples. It was definitely an experience, walking in the steps of others through the centuries.

We found the rooms dark and draughty, not at all like the photos on the website. The steps up to the bathroom had to be negotiated sideways. There was no frosted glass in either of the bathroom windows, and no blind or curtain at the front window, we hung a bath towel over it! After struggling to get into the high bath and slipping, then unable to get out again, I dare not use the shower again, a bath mat or rail may have helped but the side of the bath was very high. We came home on Thursday as my husband was unable to sleep very well due to the noise into the early hours. We have stayed in other cottages before and we were very disappointed with Coopers Cottage.

. in reality it was nothing like them. It was jammed between a Chinese take away and Indian restaurant. The bathroom windows were not fitted with frosted glass and was visible from the main road outside as no blinds or curtains were fitted to the front. To top it off, the staff from the Indian restaurant stood on the wall opposite the cottage and looked right into the bedroom. The place was dated and to be honest we nearly went straight home. The only thing we could do was leave early in the morning and only come back to sleep. We did cut our holiday short by coming home on the Thursday instead of Saturday. • "Good value for money, very warm and cosy."

Ideal for a winter break. Well placed for local amenities, shops etc , and for trips out to the Moors. (One negative for the property, difficult to sit up in bed due to headboard design!)

  • "First holiday cottage and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience."

Pickering is a great place to stay with loads to do, and easy access to other locations - e.g. Whitby, Scarborough and Flamborough Head Cottage was great with everything needed. Really dog friendly with great takeaways and good pubs.
